Chapter 277: Chapter 277- handled everything

The next day, Laurent returned to work, her daughter went to school, and Dave went to Washington Co. to finalize the last details of his handover.

For Laurent, the sudden and terrifying incident had turned out to be a stroke of luck—her daughter had been completely unharmed and unaffected. She truly felt grateful.

Nothing was more important than her child.

Even if Dave had lost everything in Washington Co., even if he had gone from the prestigious Burg Eltz to being unemployed overnight, she wouldn’t mind. Moreover, she believed that with his capabilities, he could easily find a job, and in time, he would be successful again.

She had loved this man for so many years; how could she not be clear about his abilities? He wasn’t just a handsome face. A person’s temperament, character, and abilities radiated from within; outer appearance alone wasn’t enough.

However, Laurent had never mentioned anything to Dave about his job prospects in the future. She had seen how hard he had worked at Washington Co. over the years.

Now, with everything as it was, she hoped he would take this opportunity to rest properly. After all, they weren’t short on money, and her income was still quite substantial. Moreover, their daughter was still young, and there weren’t many major expenses to worry about.

The little girl still had no idea what had happened yesterday. She naively thought she had simply gone to Uncle Bert’s house to visit Lady Tiffany, and after coming back, she kept admiring Bert’s excellent drawing skills.

For this, Laurent was deeply grateful to Tiffany. She appreciated Tiffany’s boldness and capability, and also her kind and gentle nature. By telling her daughter that they were just visiting, Tiffany had done a great job protecting the little one’s innocent heart.

Before bed that night, Laurent mentioned her gratitude toward Tiffany to Bert. Dave smiled and replied,

"If you live well with me, that will be the best way to thank her."

Laurent rolled her eyes at him.

"You really know how to make everything about your own benefit."

She was clearly grateful to Tiffany, yet he turned that gratitude into something for himself.

Dave held her close and laughed softly,

"Isn’t that true? For parents, the best gift and the greatest gratitude is seeing their children live happily and peacefully."

Laurent stayed quietly in his arms without saying anything more, because she felt that everything he said was right. As parents themselves, they could both understand the feeling that as long as their child was happy, they would be happy too.

After Laurent went to the office, the first thing she did was to meet with Matthew. She handed over the clothing samples from the discussion with Bert at the factory that day.

"These are the samples we discussed that day. I think he’s quite talented. Please take a look and decide whether to continue working with him. As for me, I’m not involved anymore, but I think he probably doesn’t need this business at the moment."

Laurent truly thought it would be a shame if these design drafts were left to waste, so she gave them to Matthew. As for whether Matthew would continue working with Bert, that was up to him. It was no longer her concern.

When she mentioned that Bert no longer needed this business, Matthew was a bit confused.

"What do you mean by ’doesn’t need it’?"

Matthew had been in the foreign trade industry for many years and had some understanding of fashion design. After looking at Bert’s design drafts, he believed many of the styles, if made, would definitely sell well. He admired Bert’s talent and was interested in continuing to do business with him.

Laurent didn’t say much more and just smiled.

"You’ll know the reason soon enough."

She wouldn’t discuss Dave or Washington Co. with anyone. As for the changes at Washington Co., after the board meeting today, the news would likely be out soon, and Matthew would certainly understand the reason then.

Bert had taken charge of Washington Co. — would he still care about such a small business?

After Laurent left Matthew’s office, she went straight back to her own office to work. Now that Dave had shed the halo of being the lord of Washington Co., she knew she would have to work even harder than ever before.

As for Dave, as expected, chaos had ensued.

The members of the board were going crazy because of his reckless decision.

Protests filled the meeting room.

Everyone knew that Daniel had an illegitimate son, but no one ever imagined that Washington Co. would fall into the hands of this illegitimate son. Nobody knew that Bert had forced his way into the company. They all just thought that Daniel and Dave had lost their minds.

However, Dave still held absolute control over the shares. Now, with the transfer of those shares to Bert, Bert became the largest shareholder, thereby gaining absolute authority.

Bert came prepared. Along with him were several men who appeared to be high-ranking executives. They looked imposing and forcibly took over several key departments, behaving as if they would replace the original executives at the slightest disagreement. This left the shareholders unable to express their anger.

Dave stood by, watching the situation unfold. Once the emotions of the shareholders had settled down, he made a brief final resignation statement:

"Thank you all for sticking with me through the ups and downs these past five or six years. I hope everyone will continue to support the new lord of Washington Co."

Then he quickly withdrew.

As for whether the shareholders would accept Bert’s leadership or whether Bert could lead Washington Co. well, that was no longer his concern.

Once he left Washington Co., the first thing Dave did was turn off his work phone, so that the shareholders and executives wouldn’t be able to reach him. From now on, he was going to fully return to his family and didn’t want to be disturbed, especially not until he had remarried Laurent.

They say a blessing in disguise lies in misfortune, and now it seemed that was indeed the case.

Having lost Washington Co., Dave felt that if he could manage his small family well, it would be worth it. The sense of accomplishment that came from managing his home was just as fulfilling as managing a large company like Washington Co.

After turning off his work phone, he used his personal phone to call Laurent. Laurent had just finished a busy period and was taking a short break in the tea room to drink some water. When she saw his call, she picked up, only to hear him in a very good mood asking her:

"What do you want for lunch?"

Laurent smiled and replied, "Don’t tell me you’re planning to cook?"

"Of course."

Dave’s voice was full of contentment.

"Now that I’m unemployed and at home, I’m here to serve you in every way. I’ll take care of you, in bed and out of bed, so you won’t ever think of abandoning me."

His words were incredibly shameless, and as Laurent listened, her face quickly turned red. Feeling embarrassed, she hurriedly changed the subject:

"Have you handled everything on your side?"

"Mm."

Dave replied simply with one word. There was nothing difficult about handling it; once he had given up his shares, he was completely done with Washington Co. Everything was settled and clean.

He then continued to ask her:

"What do you want for lunch?"

Laurent felt that asking him to cook now that he was unemployed seemed a bit awkward. To be honest, she wasn’t used to seeing him in this new role, and she didn’t usually have lunch at home; she ate with her colleagues at the office. So, she declined his offer.

"There’s no need to go through all that trouble. I’ll just eat at the office, and you should go visit Daniel at the hospital."

In fact, Laurent also wanted to say that his cooking skills were probably not good enough to let her choose what she wanted.

She didn’t want to hurt his feelings, so she politely declined.

However, he insisted.

"I’ll go visit my dad, but after I’m done, I’ll have plenty of time to prepare lunch, so you can order whatever you like."

Laurent still felt uncomfortable.

"Really, there’s no need. You should just rest at home."

Her intention was for him to relax now that he had stepped down, not to have him serve her in every way.

But after she repeatedly declined, he became a bit irritated on the other end of the line.

"Are you rejecting my chance to show off? If you keep saying that, I’ll think you have a new suitor outside—"

Before he could finish his sentence, Laurent furrowed her brows and interrupted him.

"Why are you even thinking about this? Fine, just make whatever you want. I’ll eat anything."

Was he really overthinking this? After all these years, the only person she wanted to develop a relationship with was him!

Only then did Dave seem satisfied.

"Get back home quickly after work."

Laurent reluctantly hung up the phone.

So, starting today, was he really going to be in charge of all their meals?

To be honest, she was genuinely worried if they would even get enough to eat with his cooking skills... She couldn’t bring herself to compliment him.

She herself could eat anything, but what about their daughter?
