You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 28- Disneyland!
After Laurent’s desperate scream, there was no sound outside the door.
Laurent didn’t have the energy to deal with him anymore. She returned to her bed, closed her eyes, and forced herself to sleep, trying to stop herself from thinking about the humiliating encounter that had just happened.
Dave stood outside her door for a while, his body tense and his expression dark.
He had rushed over to check on her, afraid that she might... do something drastic. But he hadn’t expected her to accuse him of driving her to suicide, or the casual remark she had made on the plane about death being a way to escape.
All of it made him inexplicably uneasy.
Although she didn’t react as violently as she had in previous arguments, Dave knew that their relationship, due to the forceful way he had initiated their intimate moment earlier, had sunk to an all-time low.
After returning to his room, he spent the rest of the night in the living room, smoking. Didn’t the old saying go, "A couple may argue at the head of the bed, but they reconcile at the foot"? Why, then, did their relationship only grow more distant after that encounter?
That night, their daughter, Emma Washington, slept soundly. Laurent, exhausted, also fell into a deep sleep after the initial sadness passed. Only Dave remained, sitting alone in the living room, brooding for half the night.
During that time, his phone rang several times. He ignored it. The person on the other end called persistently for a few rounds, but eventually gave up after realizing he wasn’t going to answer.
It was Clark calling. Dave was too upset to pick up.
The next morning, as soon as their daughter, Emma Washington, woke up, she immediately started asking for Laurent. Dave, recalling their intimate encounter the night before, had tossed and turned for a long time. He figured Laurent must be exhausted, so he calmed their daughter down and took her downstairs for breakfast, giving Laurent some extra sleep time.
Laurent did indeed sleep in quite late. After falling asleep last night, she had woken up once again, not for any particular reason, but because she had gotten her period. The pain that came with it made her body feel uncomfortable, and in the morning, she simply couldn’t get up.
It was the sound of her daughter knocking from outside that finally forced her to rise despite the discomfort. Dave followed their daughter into the room, but Laurent wasn’t welcoming. She simply squatted down to hug her daughter and kissed her, exchanging morning greetings.
The little girl’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Mom, are you ready? Once you’re ready, let’s go to Disneyland!"
With her daughter so full of joy, Laurent couldn’t bring herself to refuse, no matter how unwell she felt.
She ruffled her daughter’s hair and softly responded, "I’ll get dressed and have breakfast, then we’ll go."
"Okay!" The little girl nodded eagerly.
Laurent stood up and went to the bathroom, deliberately ignoring Dave, who had been standing beside their daughter the whole time.
She could tell that he wanted to say something to her, but she chose to pretend not to notice.
As Laurent headed to the bathroom, she felt some discomfort in her stomach and instinctively raised her hand to press against it. To her surprise, her daughter, Emma Washington, noticed the movement and immediately ran over to stop her.
"Mom, are you having stomach pains because of your period again?"
Laurent had experienced period cramps several times, and on occasions when the pain was too severe, she couldn’t pick her daughter up from kindergarten and had to ask Tiffany or Lilian for help. Over time, the clever little girl learned the term "period cramps." So when she saw Laurent in pain now, she kindly came over to ask.
Laurent thought to herself that it’s truly wonderful to have a daughter—so thoughtful and caring.
Not wanting to spoil her daughter’s excitement, Laurent smiled at her and said, "Mom just needs to drink some hot water, I’ll be fine."
To Laurent’s surprise, the little girl shook her head like an adult.
"No, it’s not okay. The lady said that when women have their period, they feel really uncomfortable and need to rest properly."
Before Laurent could respond, Dave walked over and looked at her with a probing gaze.
"Are you feeling unwell?"
Dave knew what Emma meant by "period cramps," but as a man, he felt somewhat uncomfortable asking directly, so he just asked if she was feeling unwell.
Laurent didn’t want to respond to him, even though his words seemed to show concern.
She had said before that even if he now told her he loved her, it wouldn’t erase the humiliation he had caused her, nor the degrading things he had said to her.
Still, she lowered her eyes and looked at her daughter.
"Mom is fine."
It’s often said that women are weak by nature, but become strong as mothers. Though Laurent felt unwell all over, she was determined to stay by her daughter’s side for this Disney trip, ensuring it would be perfect without regrets.
Besides, she couldn’t trust him to take their daughter out on his own. If their daughter got thirsty, hungry, tired, or needed to use the restroom, could he care for her properly?
However, her thoughts were not shared by the little girl, who tugged at her hand and shook her head.
"Mom, don’t go. You stay in the hotel and rest today."
The little girl, looking at her seriously, continued to persuade her.
"The lady from the manor told me not to let you get tired when you have your period. She said that way you can rest and recover, so you can have a healthy little brother or sister for me."
Children speak innocently, and it’s usually in moments like this that their words are both heartwarming and amusing. Just a moment ago, Emma’s words could bring tears to your eyes, but now they made Laurent smile helplessly.
When Laurent couldn’t pick up Emma because of her period in the past, she had mostly asked Tiffany to do it. The little girl’s serious tone was likely what Tiffany had said to calm her down after bringing her home, something she had remembered well. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
But bringing up the topic of having a younger brother or sister wasn’t exactly pleasant, especially after what had happened with Dave last night.
Clearly, Dave was uncomfortable with the topic too. After she had accused him of trying to push her to the edge, he quickly changed the subject.
"Emma is right. You stay in the hotel and rest, and I’ll take her to have fun."
Laurent was never the type to be overly delicate. Even though she felt unwell, she could have pushed through to accompany her daughter, but after last night, she didn’t want to be around Dave.
So, she was actually grateful that her daughter was so considerate. While it was good for her to rest, the more important thing was that her daughter insisted she stay at the hotel, which allowed her to avoid being around Dave.
Thus, she didn’t argue any further, bending down to kiss her daughter.
"I’m sorry, sweetheart..."
The little girl kissed her back.
"It’s okay."
Then, she went over to grab Dave’s hand and smiled at her mother.
"And I have Daddy with me."
Every time her daughter said such thoughtful things, Laurent felt a pang in her heart. She felt guilty for not being able to give her daughter a complete family.
But when she thought about it, the idea of sharing a man with another woman if she didn’t divorce was something she simply couldn’t bear.
After packing up everything the father and daughter would need for their outing, Laurent knew she couldn’t avoid talking to Dave about some of Emma’s habits and things to be mindful of. She couldn’t help but give him detailed instructions.
She didn’t believe he would take good care of Emma, so she made sure to leave no detail unmentioned. Of course, Dave had questions too, and they sat at the round table in her room, inevitably having another conversation.
This seemed to be the first time they’d spoken calmly since she had mentioned divorce, all for the sake of their daughter.
