You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 292- a pretty dress
Dave didn’t expect her first reaction to be that. He had just been a little annoyed that their daughter blurted out the gift right away—he was originally planning to give it to Laurent that night when they went to bed. But now, seeing she hadn’t noticed what the gift actually was, he felt rather lucky.
So, he immediately apologized with sincerity,
"Sorry, I forgot that I’m currently an unemployed man. I should be more careful with money. I’ll be more mindful in the future."
Then he quickly tucked the bag behind his back and headed into the bedroom. After putting it away, he came back out.
The little girl had originally been very curious about what the dress looked like, but seeing her mom scolding her dad with a stern face, she smartly dropped the idea and didn’t say another word about it.
Laurent returned to the kitchen to continue preparing dinner. Dave, after coming out, made a little gesture to his daughter indicating that he was going to the kitchen to smooth things over with her mom. The little girl responded with an encouraging look before going off to play on her own.
Dave entered the kitchen. Laurent was busy working. He walked over and checked her expression,
"Still mad?"
To be honest, he hadn’t considered the cost when he bought it. Even though he often said he was unemployed and all, he had actually accumulated a good amount of personal wealth over the years. But she probably didn’t know that—she had never shown much interest in how much money he had, so maybe she really believed that after losing Washington Co., he had nothing left.
The reason he never told her was because he’d been so touched when she said she’d earn money to support their family—and him—that he wanted to keep that little bit of pride intact for her. Letting her feel that she had more say in the family made him happy too.
After all, if a woman is willing to stay with you even when she thinks you’ve got nothing, then there’s nothing to worry about in the future.
Laurent paused what she was doing and looked up at him.
"No, I’m not mad. It’s my fault. You’re used to a life where money was never an issue, and it’s not really fair to expect you to adjust so suddenly. I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that."
After scolding him earlier, Laurent had calmed down and started to feel a bit guilty. Dave had grown up a pampered young master, never having experienced real hardship. Now she was suddenly asking him to scrimp and save, to carefully budget their expenses—it was probably asking too much. She should’ve given him more time to adjust slowly.
It was her fault too. She’d been so busy lately that she hadn’t properly sat him down to teach him how to live a frugal life.
Dave smiled.
"You were absolutely right. In the future, if I ever make you unhappy, you have to say it. Don’t keep everything to yourself like you used to... no more tolerating everything in silence."
As he spoke, he gently brushed aside a few strands of hair that had fallen across her forehead, his touch tender and full of affection.
Thinking back on their five years of marriage, the reason they rarely had major fights was mostly because she had always been the one giving in, always the one being patient, the one trying her best to make the relationship work.
He didn’t want her to live like that anymore—exhausted and constantly compromising.
He wanted her to live happily, to live freely, to be the happiest woman in the world.
Laurent was touched by his words—her eyes even began to sting with emotion.
"If I start voicing everything, won’t you be the one who has to compromise and put up with things?"
Dave pulled her into his arms and softly replied,
"No."
He would never feel even the slightest bit aggrieved. Besides, she wasn’t the type to be unreasonable.
Later that night, after they tucked their daughter into bed, Laurent was getting ready to take a shower. Dave took the chance to hand her the bag.
"Congratulations on landing those two big contracts."
Then he added,
"Put it on after your shower and show me."
Laurent’s eyes landed on the bag, and just as she was about to say something, Dave didn’t give her a chance to refuse. He pushed her toward the bathroom.
"Hurry and take a shower. Whatever you want to say, say it after you’re done."
Laurent was pushed into the bathroom, confused. After a while, her angry voice echoed from inside.
"Dave, you shameless man!"
Hearing that, Dave rushed over, opened the bathroom door, and walked right in. His eyes lit up with anticipation as he stared eagerly at Laurent, asking impatiently,
"So? Does it fit?"
But the next second, he was met with disappointment—Laurent was wrapped in just a bath towel. She hadn’t put on the "gift" he bought.
She stood to the side, her face flushed, holding the so-called dress he got her—if it could even be called that. It was nothing but a single, sheer layer of lace. Wearing it would be basically the same as wearing nothing at all.
She had just finished her shower and opened the box, only to nearly explode with rage.
This man was completely shameless—he actually bought this kind of thing for her to wear.
After his initial disappointment, Dave looked entirely innocent, trying to defend himself.
"This kind of thing is meant to spice things up between a married couple, right?"
Laurent let out a furious snort.
"So what—you need this kind of thing now just to get in the mood?"
"You—"
Dave was instantly enraged by her words. His temper flared, and in one swift motion, he scooped her up by the waist—still clad in nothing but a towel—and without even making it to the bedroom, he tossed her straight onto the living room sofa.
With a fierce glare, he growled,
"I have to prove to you that I don’t need that kind of thing to be in the mood!" 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Laurent was completely devoured, with no room for resistance.
In the end, he was even forced to wear that thin, almost transparent layer, which made him lower his gaze once again. He gripped her waist and did it all over again.
From that moment on, Laurent finally learned his lesson. He would never dare to utter even the slightest word of disdain about a man’s capabilities in that area.
That night, a visitor also arrived at Daniel’s hospital room.
Lilian was the one accompanying Daniel that evening. Ever since Daniel was hospitalized, Lilian had been coming to keep him company after work, staying until he fell asleep before leaving.
During the day, Lilian was at work, so sometimes Dave would stay. But after a few days, when Daniel had mostly recovered, there wasn’t much need for constant care anymore. Tiffany had only visited once or twice, always during the day. However, Tiffany was the one preparing his meals, which were delivered by either Daniel’s driver or Dave and Lilian.
But for Daniel, this treatment was more than enough.
He had originally thought that after signing the divorce agreement, Tiffany would completely ignore him or push him to finalize the divorce. To his surprise, she still came to visit and even prepared his meals. He was already very satisfied with that.
The visitor was Bert. At the time, Lilian was still in Daniel’s hospital room and froze for a moment when she saw it was Bert.
Everyone in Burg Eltz knew who Bert was, and of course, Lilian knew him too. However, she had never interacted with Bert, and Bert had never done anything toward her. It seemed that all of Bert’s dissatisfaction and resentment were directed at Dave.
Perhaps it was because she was a girl with no direct inheritance rights to Washington Co, so Bert never bothered with her.
When Daniel saw Bert, his expression immediately darkened.
"What are you here for?" Daniel’s tone was far from friendly.
