Chapter 302: Chapter 302- humiliation

Daniel was still there, but he didn’t say anything. His face was expressionless as he walked over to grab the document they had been discussing earlier, then turned and left without telling Daniel where he was going.

Once he was in the car and out of Washington Co., Bert took out his phone and dialed a number.

"Where are you?"

"I’m at the villa, fishing."

The man’s voice on the other end was calm and leisurely, and Bert felt a sense of tightness in his chest upon hearing it.

As frustrating as it was, he had to swallow it down. He continued speaking.

"Let’s meet."

"Oh?"

The man seemed surprised to hear Bert wanted to meet.

"Do you need something?"

"Mm."

Bert gave a short response, and the man on the other end chuckled with evident satisfaction.

"Well, you’ll have to come to me. I just arrived at the villa, and I’ve just started fishing. I don’t want to go back for a meeting."

"Alright."

Bert suppressed his frustration. After getting the man’s address, he drove straight there. He didn’t have a choice—he needed something from him.

After hanging up, Dave put his phone aside and returned his focus to the lake, continuing to fish. Laurent and his daughter loved fish, so on a whim, Dave had decided to come to the villa where he had previously entertained the Brown couple, hoping to catch some fresh fish for his wife and child.

Since tomorrow was the weekend, he figured he’d get a head start. Laurent would join them later after work, and they planned to spend the weekend together in the peaceful, scenic location.

What he hadn’t expected was for Bert to call, asking to meet, and for Bert to sound so restrained. Dave could roughly guess why Bert wanted to meet him.

He was surprised, though—had Bert really swallowed his pride and called him?

But whether Bert could really swallow his pride—well, he’d know when Bert arrived, wouldn’t he? Thinking of this, Dave’s mood lifted considerably.

Around forty minutes later, Bert arrived, and from a distance, Dave saw that he was holding a folder. Dave was certain now—he had come to ask for his help.

Bert frowned as he walked toward Dave, taking in the picturesque surroundings. Yes, he had finally chosen to compromise and follow Daniel’s advice by coming to Dave for help.

However, before Bert could even open his mouth, Dave looked up at him and smiled.

"Well, it’s not impossible for me to help you. I’ll help you once you fill this bucket with fish," he said, standing up to glance at the folder in Bert’s hands. Then, with a light pat on Bert’s shoulder, he cheerfully added, "Alright, I’m off to take a nap now."

And with that, Dave breezily walked away.

Bert stood there, furious, nearly speechless.

Bert really wanted to turn around and leave, but thinking about his current, overwhelming situation, he could only hold it in.

He shot a furious glare at Dave’s leisurely retreating figure, then tossed the folder aside and resignedly sat down on the fishing bench, preparing to fish.

Fishing was something Bert knew how to do. He’d occasionally done it in his leisure time. But to fill this entire bucket in an afternoon...

Bert looked at the empty bucket, then at its size, and couldn’t help but grit his teeth in frustration.

Meanwhile, Dave returned to the house, and sure enough, he took a good nap. After waking up, he went for a swim in the hotel pool, played tennis in the tennis court, basically just spent his time doing whatever he felt like, until the evening when the sun began to set. Only then did he slowly stroll over to the reservoir.

Bert was sitting there, still fishing with proper posture. His expensive suit jacket had been removed and carelessly tossed on a nearby rock, looking wrinkled. He probably hadn’t expected to be put in such an uncomfortable position when he came.

However, if Dave hadn’t made things difficult for him, would he have been willing to help?

Bert had gone to great lengths to acquire Washington co, and now that he couldn’t manage it, he came asking for help. How could everything just fall into his lap?

After having Bert struggle through the afternoon, Dave finally felt a little less frustrated. Besides, he couldn’t just stand by and watch Washington co fall apart. Washington co was founded by the lord, passed down through his father Daniel, and only when it came to him did it truly develop. It was the hard work of three generations, and of course, Dave cared about it. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

He leisurely walked over, glanced at the bucket. Though it wasn’t full, it was about three-quarters full. After a quick look, he spoke with a hint of sarcasm, "Not bad, huh?"

Bert snorted coldly, too lazy to respond, and continued fishing.

Dave picked up the folder by his side, walked over, and sat at the other end of the bench, flipping through it. He knew all the projects of Washington co inside and out, because every single project had passed through his hands for approval. However, as he went through the folder, the smile on his face grew colder. Finally, he closed the folder, turned to Bert, and spoke with both mockery and a trace of hidden anger in his voice.

"How did you manage to ruin such a good hand?"

It wasn’t clear whether he was mocking Bert for ruining the company’s good projects or mocking Bert’s own life—once holding a winning hand, only to ruin it and be left in this mess.

Bert didn’t like hearing that, but he didn’t react too emotionally. He kept his gaze fixed on his fishing rod, speaking coldly.

"I’ve caught the fish for you, you’ve insulted me, and spoken your sarcastic remarks. If you’re not going to help, I swear I’ll throw you into this reservoir to feed the fish!"

That last sentence was a clear release of all the frustration Bert had been holding in throughout the afternoon.

Dave gave a disdainful grunt, then picked up the folder again and resumed looking through it.

He didn’t actually have any intention of not helping, but he was angry. When the project had been in his hands, it had been progressing smoothly. How had it hit a bottleneck just a few months after Bert took over? A promising project was nearly ruined under his watch.

Dave couldn’t imagine what would have happened to the project if Bert hadn’t come to him for help.

So, in a moment of both frustration and anger, he had mocked Bert in that way.

If this had been the past, the conversation would have escalated into a physical confrontation. However, today both of them managed to control themselves. That’s why, after that exchange, Dave calmly began explaining to Bert how to handle the project moving forward.

When Laurent arrived with his daughter, this was the scene they saw: the two of them sitting side by side, not too close, but not too far apart either, exchanging words as they discussed. The scene seemed discordant at first glance, but it also appeared strangely harmonious. Dave was speaking in a calm, measured tone, while Bert occasionally furrowed his brows, then nodded as though he understood.
