Chapter 308: Chapter 308- break up

After thinking about all this, Laurent got up in the middle of the night, took her phone, and sent Dave a message:

"I’ve decided to go to A.T. If you can accept it, then come back and we’ll remarry. If you can’t accept it, then goodbye."

After sending the message, she turned off her phone and went back to sleep peacefully.

On the other side, Dave hadn’t really slept. He hadn’t contacted her, and she hadn’t reached out either. How could he sleep like that? He tossed and turned all night.

When he received her message, he couldn’t sleep at all. He jumped up from the bed, picked up his phone, and reread her message over and over again, word by word. His anger built up, and he grabbed the cigarette on his nightstand, lighting it and smoking furiously.

He was furious, but she was even more ruthless—she was telling him that if he didn’t accept, it would be over!

Was she breaking up with him?

Dave was so enraged, he could hardly contain himself. While smoking, he tried calling her, but her phone was off!

At this point, Dave couldn’t stay calm anymore. He had planned to use running away from home as a way to force her to compromise, but she turned the tables and just told him it was over!

She really had guts!

Her heart was really cold!

Now, there was no way he could get any sleep. After calling her a few times with no answer, he tossed and turned until the morning light began to break. As soon as it was light out, he got up, didn’t bother with breakfast, and drove straight back to Burg Eltz.

Laurent’s mother wanted to ask him what had happened, but he wouldn’t say anything and just rushed off.

At this point, Dave didn’t care about using his "running away" tactic anymore. All he knew was that she wanted to break up with him, so he sped all the way back to Burg Eltz.

As Dave parked the car downstairs and was about to head upstairs, he happened to see Laurent coming down the stairs with their daughter, seemingly on her way to take her to kindergarten.

The little girl was very happy to see him.

"Daddy, are you back from work?"

Dave looked at Laurent. He understood why their daughter would think this—she probably didn’t want her to know the truth about their argument, so she had told her that he was busy with work.

He could understand that. If it were him, he wouldn’t tell their daughter the truth either. He believed that every parent would try to protect their children from knowing about arguments between the parents. Everyone wants to provide a stable and warm family environment for their child.

Laurent didn’t look at Dave. After their daughter finished being affectionate with him, she took her hand and was about to leave. Dave gritted his teeth and spoke up.

"Stop!"

Only then did Laurent finally glance at him.

"Let’s talk after I take her to school," she said.

Then she took their daughter to her car and, with a casual wave, drove off.

After dropping off their daughter, Laurent received a call from her mother on the way back to Villas. Cassy had noticed how hurriedly Dave had left and, concerned that something might have happened between them, called to check in. Laurent was somewhat puzzled.

"How did you know we had an argument?"

Laurent was confused. She had never mentioned their argument to her mother. How could her mother possibly know, especially from so far away?

Cassy felt there was no need to hide it anymore and replied.

"He’s been staying at our house these past few days."

Upon hearing that, Laurent felt her anger rise. She thought the last place he would go was her parents’ house. To her surprise, he had actually gone there and even went ahead to play the victim. It was just... unbelievable.

Laurent was so furious, she didn’t even know what to say for a moment. After a while, she spoke to her mother.

"Don’t worry about it. I’ll handle it myself. I’ll make sure everything is okay."

As for Dave going to her parents’ house and playing the victim, Laurent was both angry and amused. She was angry at his little tricks but also found his childish behavior laughable.

On her drive home, she took time to calm herself. No one liked fighting, and no one wanted to be in an unpleasant situation over something trivial. After an argument, neither side was in the mood for anything else. Didn’t they always say that a harmonious family brings success in everything?

When she got home, the entire house reeked of cigarette smoke, which made Laurent wrinkle her nose. The culprit was sitting on the living room sofa, chain-smoking one cigarette after another.

"Dave, don’t you care about your health?"

Her instinct made her walk over, grab the cigarette from his hand, and extinguish it forcefully in the ashtray in front of him. Then she moved to the window, opened it wider to let in some fresh air.

After doing all that, when she turned around, she saw him staring at her intently through the smoke.

She avoided making eye contact, but Dave raised his hand, pointing to the phone in front of him. In a deep voice, he asked.

"What did that message you sent mean?"

Laurent lowered her gaze to her fingers, and the "lover’s knot" bracelet on her wrist. She replied to him in a muffled tone.

"Just the literal meaning of the words you saw."

She had started wearing this bracelet after they reconciled and had worn it every day since. Each time she looked down at it, she would, somewhat cliché, think of phrases like "my heart is tangled with a thousand knots" and feel a sweetness in her heart.

Since they got back together, it seemed like he had been the one making all the efforts, always the one to take initiative, always chasing after her. Now that she worked every day, she didn’t cling to him as she used to. But that didn’t mean she didn’t love him anymore. If she didn’t love him, why would she bother getting back together with him?

It’s just that her love wasn’t as outwardly visible as it used to be. She chose to quietly hide it in her heart. Wearing the bracelet he gave her every day was also a way for her to show her love for him, right?

"Want to break up?"

Dave was so enraged that he scoffed coldly a few times.

"Fine. Since you don’t want me anymore, why do you even care whether I smoke or take care of my health?"

Saying that, he picked up a cigarette from the table, intending to smoke. Laurent quickly walked over and snatched the cigarette from his hand.

"Can you stop being so childish?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Seeing her approach, Dave took the opportunity to raise his hand and pull her into his arms. So, he sat on the sofa while she ended up sitting on his lap.

Laurent didn’t resist. After being held like that, she just snuggled into his embrace and muttered in a muffled voice.

"Who said I want to break up with you? If I didn’t say such harsh words, would you have come back?"

Dave froze for a moment, but his expression was now clearly different, no longer as angry as before.

Laurent looked at him seriously and said,

"I never thought of breaking up with you. Since I married you, I’ve been committed to living with you."

She paused for a moment.

"The divorce talk back then was forced, and that message I sent this time was also to force you to come back. I said it on purpose."

As Laurent spoke, she felt a sense of grievance.

"Did you think I wasn’t worried when you left home without a word? I asked so many people last night, and no one knew where you were. Do you think that didn’t hurt me?"

Last night, she had truly been tortured, angry and worried at the same time.

"We’re both in our thirties, why are we acting more immature than people in their twenties? Why do you have to play the runaway game when we fight? Don’t you know other people will be worried?"

At this point, Laurent really wanted to cry. She didn’t look at him anymore and buried her face in his chest.

"I didn’t want to break up with you. I just wanted you to come back quickly..."

Since he had left, she had no choice but to use harsher tactics to make him come back, right? Were they just supposed to keep having this cold war? If he didn’t come back, nothing would ever get solved.

Dave, who had been ready to unleash his anger, found himself unable to do so after hearing her soft words and feeling her soft body. He had thought she was truly cold-hearted and wanted to break up. He had been all fired up to confront her, but instead, she was explaining tearfully that she only wanted him to return.

Alright, he admitted it—her tactics were the most lethal.
