You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 43- you cannot leave this town
The dinner went fairly smoothly. With Laurent’s permission to cut her hair and delicious food in front of her, their daughter forgot about Dave’s previous harshness and was all smiles throughout the meal.
As the meal was nearing its end, the little girl eagerly invited Laurent again.
"Mom, can you have dinner with me again tomorrow night?"
What the little girl really had in mind was that if she saw her mother tomorrow night, they could go get her hair cut.
Laurent took a napkin and wiped the sauce off the corner of her daughter’s mouth, then gently answered her.
"Mommy has to go to Aunt Marylin’s tomorrow, so I can’t have dinner with you."
Before the little girl could respond, Dave, who was sitting opposite them, furrowed his brows and asked,
"Why are you going there?"
Laurent pretended not to hear him and continued talking to her daughter.
"You’ll be living with Lady from now on. Be a good girl and listen to Lady. Mommy will come see you every week."
Dave could no longer stay calm. From what she said, it sounded like she had no intention of staying in the county.
"Are you going to Manchester to work and live?"
Dave had some impression of her roommates because she used to chatter on about them in front of him. He vaguely remembered the "Aunt Marylin" she mentioned, who was a translator in Manchester.
Laurent, already irritated, looked at him and snapped back, "Is that a problem?"
Why was he always sticking his nose into things? Where she went had nothing to do with him. Didn’t he realize that they were divorced now?
Dave gritted his teeth and asked, "What about our daughter when you go to Manchester?"
Laurent found it utterly ridiculous.
"Isn’t the custody of our daughter in your hands now? What happens to her is your concern. I’m free now, and it was you who set the rule that I could only visit her once a week!"
For the first time, Dave regretted it — regretted taking custody of their daughter. If their daughter were with Laurent, at least she couldn’t leave and live freely like this.
The more Dave thought about it, the angrier he became. Why? Why was it that she was the one who wanted to get married, and she was the one who wanted the divorce, yet now she was freely enjoying her life?
A thought struck him. She wanted to run away?
Ha, let’s see if she has the ability to do so!
Laurent ignored Dave’s inexplicable sarcasm and continued to remind their daughter to be good.
After dinner, Dave didn’t say another word. Laurent, too, didn’t want to talk to him and focused on taking care of their daughter.
On the way back, it was Dave driving them. Laurent had originally planned to let him take their daughter home first, while she would take a cab back. However, their daughter insisted on staying with her, saying she wanted to spend more time with her. Laurent had no choice but to get into Dave’s car.
The car had barely started when their daughter fell asleep in her seat. With no more chattering from their daughter, the car became very quiet, so quiet that even their breathing seemed amplified. Laurent lowered her head and looked at her phone.
Dave glanced at her several times through the rearview mirror, and a few times he tried to speak, but his words were stifled by the cold indifference on her face.
Saying anything seemed so ironic now. He was actually a little afraid to talk to her.
Because every time he spoke, she would inevitably counter him, and they would end up arguing.
He didn’t want to argue with her, but it seemed that in her eyes, everything he said was wrong. After several heated arguments, he had become afraid to speak to her.
He didn’t understand why their relationship had turned into this. She used to always listen to him.
The car stopped downstairs at Adeline’s apartment. Laurent quickly thanked him, opened the door, and got out, leaving Dave with nothing but the cold, slender figure of her back.
Dave didn’t know what kind of feeling stirred in his heart. All he knew was that his chest felt tight, and he stepped hard on the gas, the black car disappearing into the night.
Laurent returned to Adeline’s apartment. Adeline had just finished her late shift and was making herself some noodles. Laurent joined her and ate a large bowl as well.
She hadn’t eaten much for dinner. She didn’t know if it was because her values were too rigid, but she always felt that two people who had divorced should have no further contact, especially when one of them still had feelings for another woman.
So now, being around Dave felt awkward. She kept thinking that he and Clark were in love, and now that they were divorced, her being with him again would make her the third party. This awkward feeling made it hard for her to enjoy dinner.
After finishing the noodles with Adeline, Laurent went to her room to pack her luggage. Originally, she had packed everything and planned to go to either Marylin’s or Zoey’s place, but after a conversation with her mother, she decided to go back to her parents’ house. So, this time, she only brought a few change of clothes and daily necessities for her short trip.
During dinner, Dave had asked her if she was planning to move to Manchester for work. She didn’t answer him in detail because she felt that she no longer had any relationship with him. There was no need to report everything to him.
What was he to her? And what was she to him?
Why did she need to tell him about her plans? And what right did he have to inquire about her life?
She repacked the rest of her things and asked Adeline to help her mail them back to her parents’ house tomorrow. After she returned from her trip, she would go straight back to her small town.
Once everything was packed, she went to bed. The plane ticket had already been booked, and she was just waiting to depart the next day.
However, what Laurent didn’t expect was that as soon as she arrived at the airport the next day, she was stopped by a few large, imposing men in the lobby. One of them, with a stern expression, asked:
"Are you Miss Laurent?"
Laurent didn’t know what was going on, and their intimidating presence made her feel uneasy. She could only truthfully respond:
"Yes, I am. May I ask what this is about?"
After confirming her identity, the man replied seriously:
"This is what happened. We were sent by Mr. Washington to stop you."
Laurent was confused:
"What do you mean?"
How did her trip for some time away become tied to Dave?
The man spoke slowly and firmly:
"It means Mr. Washington does not approve of you going to Manchester."
Laurent was furious. She protested angrily:
"How dare he not approve? What right does he have to interfere with my personal freedom? What you’re doing is illegal!"
The man, still expressionless, replied:
"This is between you and Mr. Washington. We are just doing our job."
Laurent took several deep breaths to calm herself down, preventing herself from fainting from anger. After regaining some composure, she tried to push her suitcase and walk around them, but the few burly men stood in her way, blocking her path.
"Move out of the way!"
Laurent couldn’t stop herself from shouting, but the men remained unmoved. She gritted her teeth:
"If you don’t move, I’ll call the police!"
She took out her phone, ready to dial, but before she could do anything, someone behind her snatched it out of her hand. She turned around in a panic and saw Dave standing there, casually playing with her phone, a relaxed expression on his face.
"Enough, stop with the useless actions."
"In this town, you know my connections and influence. Even if you call the police, no one will care."
Laurent was trembling with anger, unable to contain her frustration:
"Dave, what do you want?"
"We’re divorced now. The past is the past. What right do you have to interfere with my freedom?"
"What do I want?"
Dave smirked, enjoying her angry reaction, and answered smugly:
"I don’t want anything. Everything I’m doing is for the sake of my daughter."
"When my daughter wants to see you, you must show up immediately."
"When my daughter wants you to cook for her, you must make it right away."
"When there’s a school event for parents, you must be there and give her a complete family in front of others."
"So, you cannot leave this town!"
"Dave ,fuck you!"
