Chapter 48: Chapter 48- Bert

Through the emotional upheaval with Dave, Laurent had come to a profound realization: women should have their own careers. Men were unreliable. Only by becoming strong herself would others respect her, and she would no longer fear being hurt by others.

Living like she used to, staying home all day to support her husband and raise children, disconnected from society and isolated from the outside world—if a man loved you, it was fine. But if he didn’t love you or abandoned you, you were nothing. And especially when you were old and faded, abandoned at that point, there was no way out.

Fortunately, she was still young, not yet at the point of being discarded when she grew old and unattractive. It wasn’t too late to start fighting now.

To be honest, she was even somewhat grateful to Dave. If it hadn’t been for him, she wouldn’t have had this sudden awakening. She might still be living in the fantasy of their loving relationship, unwilling to wake up.

Now that she was awake, it was time for her to strive.

After checking in with her close friends Marylin and the others, Laurent took a shower and then went to her room to catch up on sleep.

She had been mentally and physically exhausted during this time. Now that the divorce was final and the knot in her heart was loosened, her tense nerves and body relaxed completely. She needed a good rest.

While she was catching up on sleep, Alex, still enraged, called Daniel to complain about his son’s behavior, criticizing him for his poor parenting. After all, they were divorced, yet he still acted immaturely by blocking Laurent at the airport.

When Daniel heard about his son’s disgraceful actions and that Alex had come to him in person, he was so humiliated he nearly passed out.

After apologizing to Alex, he immediately called Dave, his fury boiling over.

"Look at the mess you’ve made! If you can’t let go, then why get a divorce in the first place?!"

Dave, already in a bad mood, was even angrier after being scolded by Daniel. Without hesitation, he fired back.

"Have you done any less nonsense? Take care of your own business before criticizing mine!"

Then with a loud *click*, the phone call ended.

Daniel, on the other end, was furious but had nothing more to say.

Ever since the revelation five years ago about his secret child abroad, and ever since he forced his son to choose between the company or Clark, and especially since he thought it was Laurent, the father, who had schemed against him, their father-son relationship had been completely frozen.

In the past, Laurent had always been the one to help ease the tension between them. Over the past few years, there had seemed to be some signs of thawing, but now, with Laurent’s marriage falling apart and his mother Tiffany, in a fit of rage, bringing up divorce again, any hope of reconciling their father-son relationship seemed even more impossible.

Daniel was also quite frustrated, not knowing whether to be angry at himself or at his son.

Ironically, the Lord of Burg Eltz had recently been so upset by all the divorce dramas—both the old and the young—that he had ended up in the hospital. Tiffany had moved in with her daughter, ignoring everything at home, and Daniel felt too embarrassed to tell her that the Lord was sick.

So, while the Lord was in the hospital, Daniel had to manage everything himself, taking care of the doctor’s appointments and hospital arrangements. It was expected of him, but the constant running back and forth to deliver meals was a burden for him. Though he didn’t have to cook, as the servants prepared the meals in advance, it still wore him out.

The real problem, though, was that the Lord was never in a good mood, constantly shouting at him.

His father was sick, his wife had brought up divorce, his son was divorcing his daughter-in-law and cold-shouldering him, his daughter was wavering—sometimes sympathizing with him, other times siding with her mother and brother.

Now, his former in-laws had shown up to accuse him of failing as a father...

Daniel felt like his life was a complete mess.

But just at that moment, he received a call he most dreaded, yet couldn’t avoid answering.

When he picked up, the person on the other end greeted him with a smile in their voice:

"Father, it’s been years. I’ve missed you so much. How have you been lately?"

The person on the other end of the line spoke politely and cheerfully, but Daniel, thinking about all the recent unpleasantness at home, could only feel deep malice. He was furious and immediately demanded,

"Bert, what do you want from me?!"

The other person, however, laughed even louder.

"Father, why do you say that? I don’t want anything. I just want to see that none of you are happy."

The words were a blatant provocation. Daniel’s hands shook with anger.

"How could I have given birth to such a bastard?!" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Bert responded, still laughing, "They say you can tell what kind of son a father has by how the father behaves. If you call me a bastard, aren’t you just calling yourself one?"

Daniel felt his blood rush to his head, and with his anger reaching a boiling point, everything went black. He fainted right then and there.

Although his recent conversation with Dave hadn’t been pleasant, it hadn’t made him this furious. Bert was just too vile and vicious, every word striking at his heart.

Fortunately, this happened in the hospital. He had just come out of the Lord’s room, and there were nurses passing by in the hallway. When they saw him collapse, they immediately called for a doctor to treat him.

Ironically, Daniel’s fainting actually helped the Lord’s condition improve.

The Lord’s health wasn’t actually that bad, but with the constant turmoil of his son and grandson going through divorces, his heart was heavy. How could he not feel burdened?

So, he took the opportunity to stay in the hospital, torturing his son in every possible way. If only his son hadn’t foolishly kept that mother and child hidden abroad from everyone, none of this would have happened!

If only, when he first found out about his child outside the marriage, he had chosen to be honest and upfront with his legitimate wife, perhaps there wouldn’t have been so many grievances now.

But instead, he didn’t. He took matters into his own hands and kept it a secret, raising that mother and child abroad for half a lifetime. Even in the first few years, he often used work as an excuse to fly abroad to live with them...

It wasn’t until five years ago when his competitors exposed the entire affair that the outsiders found out about it.

When his daughter-in-law Tiffany angrily brought up divorce, it was only after his persistent persuasion, urging her to think about the children, that she held off.

But this time, with his grandson’s marriage falling apart, all the grievances his daughter-in-law had been holding onto came out, and she too angrily filed for divorce.

Just as he knew that Laurent’s divorce was beyond saving, he also knew that his usually gentle daughter-in-law, now so resolute in filing for divorce, couldn’t be persuaded back.

This time, he, the old man, had no face left to try to hold onto her.

It was because of his son’s mistake that two marriages ended in misfortune, so the Lord, filled with rage, directed all his anger at his son.

But when he heard that his son had fainted, the Lord immediately felt better. Seeing that his son’s last call before passing out was from none other than...

He couldn’t help but sigh.

What a curse, what a curse.

The bastard who made his own father faint—his conduct really is despicable.

Wooden had never liked that mother and child from the beginning, so he had refused to meet them for all these years, never willing to acknowledge them. However, even without meeting them, just from one phone call, he could already tell what kind of people they were. As the saying goes, one can see the whole picture from just a glimpse.

After finishing the unpleasant conversation with his father, Dave grabbed Laurent’s phone from the side to see if she had called for her phone and luggage.

He was waiting for her to come to him to ask for them.

However, there were still no missed calls.

He tried to log into her social media again, but found he couldn’t. He refreshed the page several times, but still couldn’t log in. Clearly, she had logged in from her side, and he had no idea what her new password was.

Angrily, he picked up the phone to call her, but then remembered that her phone was in his possession.

His finger hovered over the contacts for a long time, eventually stopping at "Father-in-law." He was just about to dial when he hesitated and hung up.

As for this father-in-law, well, former father-in-law now—he had long known he didn’t like him. Every time they met, he was greeted with cold stares, and he’d heard it was because he wasn’t good to his daughter.

But he didn’t love her, so why would he treat her well? That would be hypocritical. Moreover, it was his daughter who insisted on marrying him, not him forcing her.

So over the years, he had felt that Alex was a bit unreasonable, and he hadn’t made much effort to be friendly, only doing what was necessary on the surface.

As a result, their relationship had remained stiff and cold. Now, to call his former father-in-law to find Laurent... Dave was hesitant, especially since this father-in-law had just made a complaint to Daniel.

With that thought in mind, he decided against calling.

Instead, he picked up his and Laurent’s phones and left.
