Chapter 49: Chapter 49- the pressure

He decided to go to Lilian’s place and have her contact Laurent to let her know to come pick up her phone and luggage.

However, just as he got into the car, he received a call from his sister, Lilian.

"Dave, you need to come to the hospital right now. Dad just fainted!"

Dave furrowed his brows and asked in a deep voice, "What happened?"

"Well... Dad came to the hospital to visit the lord, and after taking a phone call, he fainted from anger..." Lilian hurriedly explained on the other end.

Dave quickly walked toward the parking lot and replied, "I’m coming right now."

Before hanging up, he asked one more thing, "Where’s mom?"

Lilian sighed, "They called mom first when it happened, but after she received the call, she only sent me here. She didn’t come herself."

Dave remained silent for a moment after hearing this.

"I understand," he said before hanging up and driving to the hospital.

Although his relationship with Daniel was cold and strained, that didn’t mean Dave didn’t care about Daniel. He hated him, but never thought about wishing for Daniel’s death.

On the way to the hospital, his mother’s decisiveness made Dave think of Laurent’s resoluteness.

His mother was heartbroken and utterly disillusioned with Daniel. Was Laurent feeling the same way about him?

When Dave arrived at the hospital, the lord was already outside Daniel’s room, giving him a serious warning:

"Be careful what you say in front of your father. Don’t anger him any further."

Dave glanced at the lord and nodded before entering the room.

Although his relationship with Daniel was bad, his relationship with the lord was much better. The interaction between grandfather and grandson was far more harmonious than that of father and son, so Dave actually listened to the lord’s advice.

When Dave entered the room, Daniel was lying on the bed with his eyes closed, surrounded by several doctors in white coats, their faces grim. Lilian was standing nearby, her face pale with worry.

At first, Dave thought Daniel’s condition was serious, and his heart sank. But when he looked at Daniel, he accidentally caught him looking towards the door, half-closed eyes filled with expectation.

Dave immediately understood. He sneered in disdain, realizing that Daniel wasn’t seriously ill at all. He was pretending to be much worse than he was in order to get his mother to visit him.

Dave had planned to walk up and expose Daniel’s charade, but as he stepped forward, he suddenly felt a pang of sympathy for him, thinking about his own situation.

Thus, the words of confrontation were held back, and he turned to the doctors instead, pretending to know nothing as he asked:

"How is he doing?"

One of the doctors took over the conversation and seriously started describing Daniel’s condition, making it sound as though it was very severe. However, Dave quickly realized that it was just a case of Daniel’s blood pressure spiking due to anger, and there was nothing to worry about.

It seemed like the doctor, likely following Daniel’s instructions, was trying to deceive him into believing that Daniel’s illness was far worse than it actually was. The doctor used a lot of complicated medical jargon, but didn’t seem to realize who he was dealing with. Dave had seen far more deceitful tactics in the business world, and besides, he had already noticed Daniel’s expectant look earlier.

Finally, after the doctor’s long-winded explanation, Dave glanced at him and淡淡 said, "I understand. I’ll go ahead and handle the hospitalization procedures."

Of course, Dave knew there was no need for hospitalization or treatment, but he decided to play along for Daniel’s sake. Not for any other reason, but simply because seeing Daniel lying there, pretending to be ill, looking so frail and pitiful despite knowing it was all an act, made him feel a pang of sympathy.

The so-called attending doctor then stopped him with a chuckle and said, "Yes, Mr. Washington needs hospitalization, but there should be someone to stay and take care of him, right?"

Dave could clearly sense the doctor’s subtle suggestion, hinting that Tiffany should come to take care of Daniel. However, that was not for him to decide. The fact that he chose not to expose Daniel’s act and allowed him to stay in the hospital was already the most he could do.

As for whether Tiffany would visit or take care of him, that was beyond his control.

So, ignoring the doctor’s implied suggestion, Dave turned to Lilian and said, "Lilian, you and I will take turns staying with him these next few days."

If they were going to play along, they might as well make it convincing.

And as he expected, as soon as he mentioned that he and Lilian would take turns, Daniel immediately started coughing. The doctor, in on the act, quickly added, "Yes, Mr. Washington, considering how busy you are and Miss Washington still has school, it might be difficult for her to manage. Plus, taking care of a patient is something a spouse naturally does, as they understand each other’s habits and needs..."

Dave interrupted the doctor’s words without hesitation, his tone growing impatient.

"I can’t control other people’s decisions."

This back-and-forth was getting tiresome. He had already allowed Daniel to fake being ill; that was more than enough help. Whether Tiffany would come to take care of him was up to her and her feelings toward Daniel. If she chose not to, that would only confirm that her affection for him had completely faded.

With that, Dave turned and walked out. The doctors followed behind him, and Lilian, still confused, hurried after him, tugging at his sleeve and nervously asking, "Dave, is Dad really okay?"

Dave glanced at the doctors trailing them, his tone dismissive.

"Didn’t the doctors already explain everything?"

Lilian hesitated, unsure, her confusion still clear. "They did... but I didn’t understand any of it."

Dave’s lips twitched slightly in a faint, dry smile, but his patience was running out. He knew she wasn’t exactly the brightest.

He paused and turned to face her.

"This illness could be difficult to treat, or it could be relatively easy, don’t you think, doctor?" he said, his voice rising at the end, intentionally loud enough for Daniel to hear from the bed. He gave a pointed glance at the doctors who looked uncomfortable and awkwardly chuckled.

The tension was palpable. It was clear that Dave wasn’t going to give in to playing along with this charade much longer. He might not expose Daniel directly, but he wasn’t about to make it easy for him either.

Lilian walked out of the room, her mind full of conflicting emotions. Seeing her father so vulnerable and helpless had stirred up a deep sense of pity for him, but the situation was so complicated. She didn’t understand exactly what was going on with him, and the tension between her parents was thick enough to choke on.

Meanwhile, in the quiet room, Daniel lay back, staring at the ceiling. His heart was heavy, the weight of years of mistakes and misjudgments pressing down on him. He had hoped, even after all he had done, that his family could heal, that he could make amends. But as he lay there, the truth slowly settled in: his attempts at redemption had come too late. His wife, his children—none of them seemed to care enough to make things right.

The absence of Tiffany, the coldness from his son, the indifference of his wife—it all hit him harder than any physical ailment ever could. He had spent years hiding his secret, fooling himself into thinking he could fix things without facing the consequences. But now, he was trapped in a web of his own making, and there was no easy escape.

As Lilian’s footsteps faded, Daniel closed his eyes, pretending to sleep. He wasn’t sure if he was tired or simply overwhelmed by the mess of his own life. Either way, sleep felt like a temporary refuge from the storm of emotions swirling within him.

First, Dave and Laurent were getting a divorce, then her parents were also on the verge of divorce, the Lord fell ill, and now her father was sick too...

Sigh, she felt like she was really about to crack under the pressure. She just wanted to find a shoulder to lean on, but she didn’t even have a boyfriend.

After handling Daniel’s hospitalization, Dave went to arrange for the release of Lord Burg Eltz. When the Lord saw that his son was sick, he lost interest in continuing to act ill and make things difficult for him.

Wooden, concerned about his son’s condition, was relieved when Dave assured him that there was no serious problem, but that Daniel would need some treatment for a few days. Only then did the Lord feel at ease and allowed the driver to take him home.
