Chapter 61: Chapter 61- the affair rumors

The next morning, Dave woke up at five o’clock, while the little girl was still fast asleep.

Dave got up early to prepare breakfast for his daughter, because he was worried about making a fool of himself in front of her again like last time. So, he woke up two hours ahead of schedule, determined to have a perfect and delicious breakfast ready by the time the little girl woke up.

Although he was clueless about anything in the kitchen, fortunately, he had the all-powerful internet.

By the time he fell asleep the night before, he had already planned out the breakfast for the morning: heat up a cup of milk for his daughter, brew a cup of coffee for himself, and make two sandwiches.

The first thing he needed to do was fry an egg. He learned the steps from online tutorials and began to cook.

After countless attempts and a trash can half-filled with burnt eggs, not to mention the several times he burned himself with splattering oil, he finally managed to cook a perfectly crispy and soft egg.

Exhausted, he poured himself a glass of water and gulped it down.

He used to watch Laurent whip up a table full of delicious dishes in no time, so he had always thought cooking was an easy task. He never realized how tiring it could be.

Once the eggs were done, the most important part of the sandwich was finished. He took a short break before moving on to the coffee machine to brew himself some coffee.

While the coffee was brewing, he toasted some bread, sliced some ham, spread tomato ketchup, washed the lettuce, and finally put everything together, cutting the sandwiches into triangles and arranging them on a plate.

By the time everything was ready, it was almost seven o’clock.

He hurriedly went to the bathroom to wash up and get rid of the smell of oil and smoke. After feeling refreshed, he went to wake the little girl.

After waking up two hours earlier and working hard all morning, his efforts finally paid off. The little girl praised the sandwiches greatly and even gave him a sweet kiss.

Dave watched as the little girl ate with such delight, and he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Breakfast was finally sorted, and thankfully, she would have lunch at school. Otherwise, he would have been really stressed.

As for dinner, he hadn’t figured it out yet.

After a busy morning, when he thought about dinner, his first reaction was to take her to his mother’s house for a meal. However, he quickly dismissed the idea, thinking that he had brought his daughter back out of spite, so it wouldn’t feel right to go there for a meal.

The more he thought about it, the more it gave him a headache, so in the end, he decided it would be easier to just take the little girl out for dinner.

It would save time and effort.

Just preparing breakfast had already exhausted him, and adding dinner to the mix, he felt like he might collapse. Going out to eat seemed like the wisest choice.

And to avoid feeling fatigued after getting to work after waking up at five, he had drunk two cups of coffee that morning.

He had brewed it himself, and although it wasn’t as bad as the first time, it was still far from as good as hers.

After dropping the little girl off at kindergarten and agreeing to pick her up in the evening, Dave finally drove to work.

After a whole night and this morning, Dave felt more tired than if he had worked a full day.

After arriving at the office, Dave was giving his secretary some work instructions when he suddenly remembered that the eggs, ham, and the little girl’s milk in the fridge were running low. He quickly wrote these items down and asked the secretary to go buy them.

The secretary looked at the note for a long time before uncertainly asking him,

"Lord Washington, are you sure you want me to buy these things?"

"Is there a problem?"

Dave raised his eyes to look at his secretary, his cold expression showing no sign of anything being amiss.

In reality, he felt quite awkward. With his position, he was already too busy with work and couldn’t even handle everything there, yet now he had to worry about these trivial matters at home.

But what else could he do? There was no one at home to help with these things, so he had no choice but to take care of them himself.

The secretary blinked and took another careful look at the note. No mistake—she had read it correctly: eggs, milk, ham.

She quickly accepted the task.

"No problem, I’ll... go buy them."

"Once you buy them, leave them in my car."

Dave casually handed her his car keys.

The secretary took the car keys and left his office, but inside, she was murmuring to herself, "What’s going on with Lord Washington? Why is he personally buying these things?"

Lady Washington was famously virtuous, so normally, these things should be her responsibility.

Could it really be true, like the news from yesterday suggested, that Lord Washington had cheated, and their relationship was in trouble? Did Lady Washington, in a fit of anger, stop taking care of these things, leaving Lord Washington to fend for himself?

Others might not know, but the secretary had some insight into Laurent.

Hadn’t she gone to Dave’s house before to learn how to make coffee for him? Even in that short morning together, she could tell that Laurent was indeed quite virtuous.

The secretary, like all the women in the county, had once envied and resented the mysterious Lady Washington. She thought that marrying Dave must have been the result of her saving the entire galaxy in her past life.

Lady Washington was considered mysterious because after the marriage, she completely disappeared from the public eye. Everyone expected her to flaunt her new life as a rich wife, appearing everywhere in the public. Instead, she shocked everyone by dedicating herself to being a wife and mother at home.

At first, Lady Washington didn’t have the best reputation. It was rumored that she had used underhanded methods to get into Lord Washington’s bed, then got pregnant and forced him to marry her.

Later, when she lost the child, people mocked her, claiming it was the consequence of her scheming and manipulative actions.

At first, the secretary had believed these rumors too. However, after that time when she went to learn how to make coffee for Dave, her opinion of Lady Washington completely changed.

Just from something as simple as making coffee, it was clear that Lady Washington truly loved Lord Washington. She had researched dozens of different coffee beans and finally perfected a brew that made Lord Washington want to drink more after tasting it.

If a woman married a man only for his wealth and power, would she really put so much effort into making him these things?

From that point on, the secretary never spoke ill of Lady Washington again. Over the years, Lady Washington and Lord Washington’s marriage seemed stable. Because they had always been low-key, Lady Washington gradually faded from public gossip.

Later, she became pregnant again and gave birth to a healthy child. Lord Washington personally named their daughter Emma Washington.

The secretary remembered a client once asking Lord Washington why he had chosen that name for his daughter.

At the time, Lord Washington had been a little drunk. Squinting his eyes, he told the client that there was no particular reason—just that the sunlight had been warm that day, her smile had been warm, and the image of her gently cradling the baby had been warm. So, he named their daughter Emma Washington.

Having worked as Lord Washington’s secretary for many years, that was the first time she had ever heard him mention Lady Washington in front of others.

Although his words were few, when a man associates warmth with a woman and gives that same warmth to their daughter’s name, the meaning is clear enough.

Moreover, as Lord Washington’s secretary, there were times when she reported to him at work and often noticed ambiguous marks on his neck, which made even her, the secretary, blush.

Their marital life seemed so harmonious—there shouldn’t be any issues with their relationship, right?

So, she was deeply skeptical of the affair rumors that had surfaced yesterday.
