You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 62- just ordinary friends
With the news from yesterday, Lady Washington became the topic of discussion again. People were saying that the woman Lord Washington had been with was the one he truly loved, and now that she had returned, Lady Washington should step aside and make way for her.
The secretary chose not to believe these rumors. However, now that Lord Washington had asked her to buy these daily necessities, she couldn’t help but begin to question whether her belief that there was no problem in their marriage was truly correct.
After the secretary left, Dave was about to deal with some work matters when Morrison barged in without even knocking.
As soon as Dave saw the angry expression on his face, he knew exactly what this was about.
"Regarding yesterday’s situation, you should give an answer today, right?"
Morrison didn’t beat around the bush. He went straight to the point, slamming his hand on the desk and grinding his teeth as he reminded Dave,
"Thanks to your continued silence, after an afternoon and an entire night of speculation, this news has made the headlines of major media today. Originally, we had this project locked down, but now, well, the whole world is watching us make fools of ourselves, waiting for us to be kicked out and humiliated!"
Dave was, of course, aware of all of this. He pursed his lips and stayed silent for a while before replying to Morrison,
"Then we’ll issue a statement saying that Clark and I are just ordinary friends."
"Huh?"
Morrison thought Dave must have lost his mind.
"The photos are so intimate, and you even spent the night at her place. Do you really think anyone will believe that?"
Dave snorted.
"Let them believe whatever they want."
Morrison, infuriated, paced back and forth in Dave’s office with his hands on his hips, then turned back to continue debating with him.
"I really don’t get what’s going on in your head! You and Laurent are already divorced, so why won’t you just make it public?"
"And also, you’re going to publicly declare that you and Clark are just friends—don’t you worry that’ll trigger her to go into some kind of frenzy again?"
As for Morrison’s mention of "frenzy," Dave shot him a sharp glare.
"Sorry, sorry, I meant to say... mental illness."
Morrison, realizing his mistake in the heat of the moment, quickly apologized and walked off to calm down.
Dave had, of course, considered what Morrison had said about triggering Clark. Her psychiatrist had already warned him that Clark shouldn’t be stimulated and that it would be best for her to focus on happier thoughts.
When Clark first returned to the country, she had confessed her feelings to him, saying that he was still the one in her heart.
He also knew that pretending to be in love with Clark, making her believe he still cared, would benefit her mental state. However, when it came to choosing between publicly acknowledging his divorce with Laurent and declaring that he and Clark were just friends, he chose the latter.
Moreover, if he publicly admitted the divorce at this point, it would only confirm the rumors that he was having an affair with another woman, which was far from the truth. He was just helping Clark.
He didn’t want to be labeled as unfaithful.
Yes, that must be it.
He was just trying to avoid being accused of cheating, which was why he refused to announce his divorce.
After Morrison calmed down, he walked back up to Dave with an amused expression and asked,
"I say, you still won’t publicly admit your divorce with Miss Rong—are you still hoping that one day she’ll come back to you?"
"Absolute nonsense!"
Dave angrily reprimanded Morrison for his inappropriate choice of words. "What nonsense about hoping she’ll come back? I’ve finally gotten rid of her. I’m just glad she’s gone, how could I possibly hope for her to come back?"
"Once she’s gone, she should never come back!"
Morrison pressed on, step by step.
"Then why don’t you just make it public?"
"There’s no reason."
Dave responded curtly, clearly annoyed.
Morrison was almost about to lose it.
"Do you know what you’re doing? By keeping quiet like this, you’re going to affect the way that French old man sees you. His opinion of you directly impacts whether we’ll get this deal or not!"
"I’m involved in the project too. I know better than you what’s at stake here!"
Dave’s face remained cold and serious. Morrison felt like punching him, just to break that ice-cold expression.
"So what are you going to do when that French old man comes to China? Don’t tell me you’re planning to ask Laurent to pretend you’re still married!"
Dave lowered his eyes, preparing to get back to work.
"You don’t need to worry about that."
As soon as Dave said this, Morrison realized what he was planning. He really was going to ask Laurent to help him play the part of a married couple.
Morrison, infuriated, couldn’t help but laugh at him.
"I’m telling you, with that cold, proud look on your face, even if you go to her, she won’t help you!"
Dave raised an eyebrow.
"When I was negotiating this project, I never imagined I’d get divorced. Now, she’s the one who’s throwing a tantrum over the divorce, putting me in this situation. She should take half of the responsibility for our project, so why shouldn’t she help? Otherwise, is she going to compensate us for the losses?"
Morrison was about to collapse from Dave’s twisted logic. He was so exasperated, he couldn’t help but laugh.
"Alright, alright, I’ll be waiting to see you go to her and get her to help you pretend!"
Did Laurent even have anything to do with their project? For Dave to so indirectly push half the responsibility onto her—it was beyond ridiculous.
And to top it off, he came to find him early in the morning, gave him a whole lecture just to convince him to release the divorce statement, but after all that, Dave still refused to do it. All that effort, wasted, like playing music to a cow.
Before leaving, Morrison couldn’t help but angrily vent his frustration.
"Dave, I really misjudged you."
"If I had known, I wouldn’t have worked with you!"
He slammed the door as he left.
Dave, however, wasn’t affected by Morrison’s anger in the slightest. In fact, a sense of satisfaction began to subtly rise within him.
He had said it before: if he wasn’t going to have it easy, neither was she!
Did she think that by hiding in a small town and cutting all contact with him, he would just let her off the hook? 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
She shouldn’t forget that her family was still in town—if they had the ability, they should move away!
He picked up the internal phone and dialed the public relations manager’s number, instructing the manager to come to his office to discuss drafting a public statement.
The final statement was as follows:
"Mr. Washington and the woman in the photo are just ordinary friends. There is no affair. If the media continues to maliciously interpret the images, we will use legal means to protect our rights."
The only person in the county, the leisurely Vivian, immediately saw the news and couldn’t resist taking a screenshot of the statement to mock Dave in the group chat:
"Wow, this is hilarious! He’s clearly cheating, and yet he says it with such righteous indignation."
They had agreed not to talk about Dave anymore to avoid ruining the mood, but Vivian was so angry she couldn’t control herself and posted it in the group chat anyway.
Laurent, who had been at home reading various foreign trade Japanese materials and feeling dizzy from it, had been spending all her time online, browsing foreign trade forums and silently learning various business skills.
When she saw the image Vivian posted, she opened it and took a look, a bit surprised.
