Chapter 75: Chapter 75- I’ll never fall in love with you

Dave took a step forward, blocking Laurent’s path. His tall figure stood firmly in place, completely cutting off her way home.

"That sentence just now—where did you hear it?"

He lowered his gaze, staring intently at her, refusing to let the question go.

Laurent let out a laugh, clearly exasperated. Instead of leaving, she stopped and looked up at him, her face alight with a playful smile.

"Which sentence are you talking about?"

Dave was momentarily taken aback when she suddenly smiled at him. His brain seemed to short-circuit, and he followed her lead without thinking.

"The one you just said in the car," he replied.

He really didn’t want to repeat the sentence.

Laurent chuckled softly, "I said plenty of things in the car. How am I supposed to know which one you’re referring to if you don’t spell it out?"

Her innocent expression almost convinced Dave that she genuinely didn’t remember. Reluctantly, he decided to remind her.

"The one where you said, ’I’ll never fall in love with you in this lifetime.’ That one!"

"You want to know where I heard it?"

Laurent’s smile grew even brighter.

"I just heard it, moments ago—from your own mouth, no less."

Dave was so infuriated he could barely find the words to respond. He could only glare at her, his frustration evident.

So, this was her plan all along—dig a pit for him to fall into, and watch as he willingly stepped right in.

In the end, Dave couldn’t help but laugh, the anger melting away as he instinctively raised his hand to touch her face, his tone full of helplessness.

"Can you stop driving me crazy like this?"

A long time ago, she used to be just as mischievous, always teasing him or setting up traps for him to fall into. When he got truly frustrated, he’d do exactly this—reach out to touch her face, then pull her head toward him and kiss her fiercely, punishing her sharp tongue with his own.

Laurent instinctively leaned back, avoiding his hand. She knew all too well what he was trying to do.

Reaching out to touch her—did he seriously think he could kiss her like he used to?

They were divorced now. If he really intended to do that, then he was not only shameless but downright delusional.

Touching and teasing his ex-wife—an ex-wife he had claimed he neither loved nor liked—what else could it be but madness?

Furious, she retorted, "Dave, I think you’re sick. Really sick. You should go to the S.t Hospital and get checked out."

Dave was still processing what the S.t Hospital was when she kept going, her words rolling off her tongue like bullets.

"If you can’t make it there, I have a doctor’s card right here. I can give you their number, and you can arrange for them to visit you at home."

With that, Laurent brushed past him and strode home, leaving him standing there in the cold.

It was only then that Dave realized what she meant. The S.t Hospital was the most well-known psychiatric hospital in the county.

And the reason she had the card? Back when she had suffered a miscarriage, she’d gone there once for therapy to deal with depression.

The realization hit him hard.

She had just called him crazy in the most roundabout way possible!

But no matter how angry he was, there was nothing he could do about her. She had already gone back home without so much as a backward glance.

Dave stood there, staring at her firmly closed door, a sense of desolation washing over him.

He had driven all this way early in the morning to bring their daughter to see her. Yet, he hadn’t even gotten so much as a glass of water. She truly had a way of cutting him off completely.

What made it worse was that they seemed to have had yet another argument.

The realization gave him a headache. How had she even found out about that sentence?

It couldn’t have been his father. His father was always hoping for the two of them to reconcile and would never say something so damaging to their relationship.

Could she have overheard it herself?

Whatever the case, however she had come to know, the damage was done. That sentence had clearly left a mark on her heart.

Dave could sense it—otherwise, she wouldn’t have deliberately brought up that sentence today.

He had stopped her earlier to explain, but in the end...

A sigh escaped him. He couldn’t understand why their conversations always seemed to end up in a deadlock.

Sitting back in his car, he mulled it over before sending her a message:

That sentence was said in a moment of anger.

Whether she believed him or not, it truly had been nothing more than words spoken in frustration.

Laurent received the message, glanced at it, and let out a self-mocking laugh. Closing the message, she chose not to respond.

A moment of anger? So what?

It didn’t change the fact that those words had hurt her—deeply.

Meanwhile, their daughter, Emma, was happily playing with her grandparents. The elderly couple, who hadn’t seen Emma in a long time, showered her with affection. The little girl, thrilled to see them again, seemed to forget all about her mother, immersing herself in the fun.

Laurent decided to retreat to her room with her phone, intending to return a call to Marylin.

But as soon as she picked up her phone, she saw that their group chat had already come alive. It turned out Marylin had mentioned her and Dave being together, sparking a flurry of discussion among the friends.

Well, among two of them. Zoey, as usual, didn’t say much. She rarely joined in on gossip, preferring to quietly observe as the others chatted.

Marylin had started the topic:

Ladies, I just called Laurent to ask about her job interview, but guess what? I accidentally overheard her with Dave. Come on, let’s analyze this—what’s going on here?

Laurent felt a pang of embarrassment. She had always thought Vivian was the nosiest, but it seemed Marylin wasn’t far behind.

Vivian was the first to react explosively:

What the heck! Two divorced people back together again?

Vivian wasn’t done venting:

What is Dave even trying to do? Hasn’t he wasted enough of Laurent’s youth already? What if Laurent gets fooled by him again? What then?

Laurent smiled wryly. Perhaps her past obedience to Dave had left too strong an impression on Vivian, making her think she was still easily swayed by him.

Zoey, ever calm, chimed in to reassure her:

Laurent isn’t the type to go back once she’s decided on divorce. She’s stronger than that.

Marylin added:

Laurent explained that Dave came over today to drop off their daughter. But honestly, the Dave I know is proud, aloof, and never goes out of his way—especially not for Laurent. Why would he suddenly go to all this trouble to personally bring their daughter over?

Vivian immediately responded, still indignant:

No one goes out of their way without a reason—it’s either something shady or something selfish!

Laurent couldn’t help but laugh out loud at that. But as the laughter subsided, she began to reflect.

Why had he come to drop off their daughter today? Last night, Tiffany had clearly mentioned that a driver would be sent.

It didn’t add up.

Unable to make sense of it, Laurent opened her door and called her daughter, who was happily playing with her grandparents, to come inside.

The little girl, her cheeks flushed red from laughter, ran in and asked, "Mommy, did you need me for something?"

Laurent crouched down to her daughter’s level and softly asked, "Mommy wants to ask you something. Didn’t the lady say yesterday that the driver would bring you here? Why did it end up being your dad?"

The girl blinked her big eyes and recounted what she had overheard from her dad and the lady of the manor.

"Because Daddy said he didn’t feel comfortable leaving me with a stranger like the driver."

Laurent suddenly understood.

That explained everything.

No matter how much or how little affection he felt toward his daughter, she was still his flesh and blood, carrying his genes. It made sense that he’d be uneasy about entrusting her to a stranger.

Laurent smiled softly, reaching out to ruffle her daughter’s hair. "Alright, that’s all. Go back out and play with Grandma and Grandpa."

The little girl chirped an "Okay!" and happily ran back out.

Laurent returned to the group chat and replied:

You’re all overthinking it. He simply didn’t feel comfortable letting the driver bring Emma, so he decided to come himself. After all, she is his daughter.

There was no way it was anything like what they were suggesting—Dave trying to be attentive or ingratiate himself with her.

Why would he bother? She was just a woman he didn’t love. If he were to try to please someone, it should be Clark, not her.
