Chapter 76: Chapter 76- a crazy person

To steer the conversation away from Dave, Laurent quickly began talking about her job interview and new position. But before she could say much, a voice message from Vivian suddenly popped up, filled with alarm:

"OMG, I think my water just broke..."

Marylin and Zoey, both unmarried and inexperienced, were clueless about what to do. Laurent, having been through this herself, immediately gave instructions:

"Lie down flat and call an ambulance. If Frank’s home, have him drive you to the hospital instead."

Vivian was already full-term, so her water breaking meant the baby was on the way. Though she had been mentally prepared for this moment, the suddenness of it had left her flustered. Laurent’s calm guidance helped her regain composure.

"Alright, ladies, I’m off to *unload*. Wait for the good news, okay? I’ll keep you updated!"

Marylin protested:

"Hey, hey! Who wants to know every detail of you giving birth? Isn’t childbirth supposed to hurt like hell? You’re going to traumatize Zoey and me, who haven’t even been through this yet!"

Laurent paused to reflect.

Did childbirth hurt?

It definitely did. She had gone through both natural labor and an emergency C-section, enduring double the pain. At the time, it had been excruciating.

But now, looking back, the memory of the pain seemed to have faded entirely.

Women, she thought, are truly extraordinary and resilient beings. There’s no pain—physical or emotional—that they cannot endure.

After Vivian was settled in the hospital and moved to the delivery room, she initially kept chatting with them, her spirits high. But as the contractions intensified, she began wailing loudly.

Marylin, clearly shaken, said she was logging off to go to the gym. Zoey added she needed to catch up on sleep after staying up late for work.

Laurent, having been through the experience herself, felt less rattled and stayed to comfort Vivian, offering words of encouragement and support.

Eventually, Vivian’s messages grew sparse and weak, with long pauses in between.

Finally, she sent one last message:

"Ladies, I’m done for."

Then, complete radio silence.

Laurent figured Vivian was in too much pain to even type.

With Vivian in labor, Laurent couldn’t focus on anything else. She found herself constantly checking her phone for updates.

During this time, Dave called her.

"What are your plans for the next couple of days? Where are you taking Emma?"

Laurent found the question irrelevant and dismissed him with a vague answer. But then he dropped another bombshell.

"I’ve booked a hotel nearby. If you need a car while taking Emma out, just let me know."

Laurent was on the verge of losing it.

Why was he lingering around like this?

Angrily, Laurent dialed his number.

"We can take a taxi to wherever we want to go. We don’t need your car, thank you. You should go do whatever it is you need to do—like leave here."

Laurent didn’t try to hide her frustration with him.

On the other end of the line, Dave was already settled into the hotel, sitting in a chair by the window, his tone light and unbothered as he replied,

"Don’t you think that’s a bit overbearing? This city isn’t your private property. How am I in your way by staying here?"

Laurent lost her composure completely at the sound of his voice—was he actually laughing?

Grinding her teeth, she shot back,

"Dave, what exactly are you trying to say?"

His voice remained casual.

"I’m not saying anything. I just don’t feel comfortable with my daughter in someone else’s car. I don’t trust it."

"Or, I could buy you a car here. You could drive her around yourself."

Dave thought this was a great idea. Since Laurent didn’t have a car and had to take the bus to work, getting her a car would solve the problem. After all these years of driving everywhere, she’d probably be uncomfortable with public transportation now. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Laurent almost shouted back,

"Can we just stay home and not go anywhere? We don’t need your car, and we definitely don’t need you buying us one!"

Laurent hung up the phone in frustration.

She thought, if he were standing in front of her right now, she would definitely scratch him, tear his face open. After all, he was shameless enough—so what if she scratched him!

What was all this about not trusting her daughter in someone else’s car? He was just trying to show up in front of her, annoy her, provoke her, and take revenge for the fact that she had kicked him out by initiating the divorce!

And as if she needed him to buy her a car?

Did he even know what his position was now? Saying he would buy her a car—wasn’t he just deliberately trying to make her angry?

Instinctively, she wanted to block him, but then she remembered their daughter and hesitated.

At worst, she could just ignore any of his future messages.

"What’s going on? I heard you yelling in there?"

Cassy knocked on the door and asked her. Laurent tossed her phone aside, pretending nothing had happened as she walked out.

"It’s nothing, just a crazy person," she replied.

She didn’t want to make her parents worry about her issues with Dave anymore.

Having been staying with them these past few days, Laurent realized that her parents’ health wasn’t as good as they often claimed on the phone. She even caught her mother secretly taking medicine.

She checked what her mother was taking—anti-inflammatory medication.

It was only after pressing her mother repeatedly that she learned her mother’s gallbladder wasn’t in great condition. She had been to the hospital, where the doctor diagnosed her with gallbladder inflammation. The doctor advised her to avoid greasy foods and not get too upset or angry.

Laurent felt guilty. Her mother was probably taking the medicine because of the stress and frustration caused by her divorce.

So, she didn’t want to share these problems with them anymore. She didn’t want them to worry about her.

She needed to live well and work hard so that they could rest easy.

While Cassy was in the kitchen preparing lunch, Alex sneaked over and asked her, "What was that brat doing with you earlier? Is he bothering you again?"

Laurent couldn’t help but smile at his worried expression. "Dad, before, he could hurt me because I cared about him. But now, I don’t care about him anymore, so whatever he does can’t hurt me."

Alex looked at her deeply, then said nothing further and went to play with the little one.

Around 1 PM, Vivian’s husband Frank sent a group message, sharing the good news that Vivian had given birth to a son. It was a smooth delivery, and both mother and baby were healthy.

Laurent finally felt a weight lift off her heart.

However, her thoughts immediately turned to visiting Vivian, since she would be starting her new job on Monday and might not have time to visit her for a while.

Tomorrow would be perfect. She had to take her daughter back to the city, so if they left early and had lunch first, she could visit Vivian in the afternoon. By then, Vivian would likely have recovered enough since she had a smooth delivery.

That afternoon, Laurent didn’t take her daughter anywhere. The little one didn’t want to go out either and was content to stay home, playing with her mom and grandparents. Later, her father went to the market to buy vegetables, taking the little one along for a stroll. They returned with a bunch of ingredients to make the dishes she liked, and Laurent cooked for her.

As Laurent busily washed and chopped vegetables, the little one stood by her side, looking up at her with a pout. "Dad can’t cook anything. He’s so dumb."

The little one clearly had complaints about her time with Dave, and after a moment of thinking, added, "The food dad takes me out to eat at restaurants is so bad!"

Laurent paused her chopping, glanced down at her daughter, and then bent down to give her a kiss.

"Next time you want something, you can ask the Lady Tiffany to make it for you, or I’ll make it when I come visit you on the weekend."

Laurent’s heart ached, but there was little she could do about it.
