Chapter 81: Chapter 81- Despicable! Barbaric! Rude!

Laurent coldly rejected his words.

"We once had a marriage, and that’s an undeniable fact. That means our relationship can never be as pure and simple as that of ordinary friends, at least not in my heart. So, I don’t want us to have any more interactions. I don’t want others to misunderstand that there’s still something between us."

Dave’s face also darkened.

"Are you planning to never speak to me again?"

Laurent pursed her lips and fell silent, turning her gaze elsewhere.

Her silence was a tacit acknowledgment of his words.

Yes, she was planning to completely cut ties with him, aside from their daughter. She wouldn’t have any more interactions with him, so he could take Emma and leave, but she would no longer ride in his car.

Even riding in his car from the factory had already felt awkward to her.

Back when she made the painful decision to divorce, she had even thought that after the divorce, the only time she would likely see Dave again would be at their daughter Emma Washington’s wedding.

But after calming down, she realized it was unrealistic to never see him again, especially with their daughter involved. However, she was still trying her best to minimize unnecessary interactions.

Seeing her expression, Dave immediately understood he had been right. She truly planned to sever all ties with him.

Fuming, he stood up and left without saying another word. Laurent glanced at his angry figure as he stormed off, then calmly turned and went to the kitchen to wash the dishes.

Alex, who had watched the entire scene unfold, paused for a moment after Dave left and then followed her into the kitchen.

"Laurent, I actually don’t think there’s anything wrong with you taking his car to the county town..."

Alex tentatively shared his opinion.

"First, it’s safer for you to ride in his car. Second, you can spend more time with Emma."

Although Alex also believed that once divorced, they shouldn’t have any more interactions, he wasn’t as firm in his stance as Laurent. For example, he didn’t see anything wrong with taking a ride with him, like today. In his view, it was nothing to be upset about.

Laurent continued washing the dishes, her voice calm.

"Dad, since you’ve seen everything, I don’t think there’s much more to say."

In other words, she had already explained to Dave why she was so firm, so there was no need to repeat it to Alex.

Alex sighed and turned to leave.

After Alex left, Laurent continued washing the dishes, but her movements slowed down.

She didn’t want to be this resolute, but she had no choice. She had loved him so deeply that it was impossible for her to act as if nothing had happened and be ordinary friends with him.

She hadn’t truly forgotten him. After all, she had loved him for so many years, and it wasn’t as simple as saying "I don’t love you" and making it go away.

The divorce was merely a superficial way to end this hopeless love; the real end required time.

She needed time to fully forget him, which was why she didn’t want him to keep appearing in her life.

Cassy came out after helping the little girl pack her things and saw that Dave had already left. Her daughter was alone, washing dishes. Alex explained the situation where the two had gotten into a confrontation, but Cassy didn’t know what to say.

It was the little girl, however, who ran around the house and, seeing that Dave wasn’t there, asked Laurent, "Mom, where’s Dad?"

Laurent could only reply, "He’s probably gone."

The little girl seemed a bit upset.

"I actually wanted to ride in Dad’s car back, but he didn’t even wait for me!"

Laurent glanced at her and replied, "Didn’t we agree that we would take the bus together?"

The little girl pouted.

"But I want to be with both you and Dad."

Laurent’s heart ached at her words. She quickly walked into her room to change clothes and prepare to leave.

She was conflicted like this—when it came to Dave, she was stubborn and resolute about not having any more interactions with him.

But when it came to her daughter, she felt helpless and had no idea what to do.

What child doesn’t wish for both parents to be around them? Her daughter was no different.

So every time she saw the little girl’s hopeful eyes, Laurent’s heart always hurt terribly.

As she went to close the blinds and change, she noticed that Dave’s car was still parked outside and hadn’t left.

She froze for a moment, then looked more carefully to confirm it was indeed his car.

Laurent didn’t expect him to still be waiting there. She had thought he had left after she had gotten angry with him earlier.

Given his usual temperament, if something didn’t go his way, he’d sulk and storm off immediately.

But this time, he didn’t leave?

Laurent quietly closed the blinds and took out her clothes to change into.

She thought to herself, he must be waiting there for Emma. He had emphasized several times that he didn’t feel comfortable with her taking someone else’s car.

After getting ready, she took her daughter’s hand and left the room. When the little girl saw that his car was still there, she happily ran over.

"Daddy, Daddy, you didn’t leave after all?"

Dave opened the car door and got out. He ignored Laurent, who was standing behind their daughter, and proceeded to pick her up.

"Dad’s waiting for you," he said coldly.

He opened the backseat door, placed her in the car seat, and fastened her seatbelt.

Laurent stepped forward, intending to say goodbye to her daughter, but the little girl called out to her.

"Mom, come on, get in!"

The little girl didn’t know that Laurent and Dave had argued because she refused to ride in his car. She just wanted her mom to get in so that they could be together with Dad. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Hearing her daughter’s plea, Laurent’s words got stuck in her throat. Especially with the hopeful look on her daughter’s face, Laurent couldn’t bring herself to step forward or walk away.

Dave, on the other hand, stood silently by the car, arms crossed, watching her coldly.

After a brief hesitation, Laurent stepped forward and said to her daughter,

"Emma, I’m sorry..."

As soon as she apologized, Dave walked over and grabbed her arm, pulling her around to the other side of the car. He opened the door and roughly shoved her into the car.

She was slim, and with his strength as a man, she couldn’t escape. His movements were quick, and Laurent heard her father shouting angrily from behind.

"Damn,let go of her!"

And then she was thrown into the backseat.

"You—"

Laurent scrambled to sit up, her protests still unspoken when she heard a loud slam. The car door was shut forcefully, and the car sped off, the sudden motion causing her to lurch forward.

By the time Laurent managed to adjust herself, she looked outside and saw that the car was already nearly out of the neighborhood. She and her daughter hadn’t even had time to say goodbye to her parents.

It made her furious.

But the car was already moving, and she couldn’t just jump out—doing that would be too dramatic.

Leaning back in the seat, she rubbed her arm, which ached from where he had squeezed it. Fuming, she muttered under her breath,

"Despicable! Barbaric! Rude!"

Dave glanced at her flushed, angry face through the rearview mirror, but he just snorted and didn’t respond.

Instead, he casually turned on the car’s music, fiddling with the controls until he selected a cheerful and upbeat tune.

Laurent gritted her teeth—he was doing it on purpose, playing this kind of cheerful music to annoy her.

But she didn’t feel like arguing with him anymore and instead focused on calming her daughter.
