Chapter 82: Chapter 82- She was no longer his possession

When Laurent got into the car, her daughter was very happy. But being a little kid, after playing all morning, she soon dozed off with her little head leaning to the side.

Laurent took off her jacket and gently draped it over her daughter to keep her from catching a cold while sleeping.

"Could you please keep a thin blanket in the car from now on? Kids fall asleep easily in cars."

She hadn’t planned on speaking to Dave, but for her daughter’s sake, she finally spoke up.

There was nothing in the car except for her daughter’s child seat. If the girl often rode in his car, she could catch a cold from not being covered while asleep.

Before, she always kept a thin blanket in her car, just in case.

Dave, feeling guilty about the criticism, knew he had no experience taking care of a child, and he hadn’t considered these small details. For him, just remembering to bring a bottle of water for his daughter was already being thoughtful enough.

However, feeling guilty didn’t stop his frustration. If she hadn’t insisted on the divorce, would their daughter be going through all this?

So, he replied rudely,

"If you think I’m not taking good care of her, then why did we get divorced in the first place? If you’re taking care of her, she wouldn’t be suffering like this!"

Laurent didn’t understand why he kept bringing up the divorce. They were already divorced—why was he still fixated on it?

And his tone made it sound like he thought the divorce was her fault, as if she had acted irrationally.

Laurent was both annoyed and amused.

Ha, if he hadn’t made her so hopeless about their marriage, why would she have insisted on the divorce in the first place?

So, in response to his accusations, Laurent didn’t back down and retorted,

"Since you know you have no experience taking care of a child, then why did you insist on fighting me for custody of our daughter?"

Laurent sneered as she spoke,

"Actually, you never really wanted our daughter. You only wanted custody to use her to control me."

Dave was furious at her sarcasm.

Part of the reason he fought for custody, as she had said, was indeed to try to have leverage over her. However, part of the reason was because he genuinely wanted his daughter.

In the past, he hadn’t been very emotionally involved with his daughter, but after spending time with her during the period when she had suggested the divorce, he had developed a deep attachment. Now, hearing her say that he didn’t want his daughter at all, he was naturally angry.

However, since he was driving on the highway, he couldn’t argue with her. He couldn’t afford to put their lives or their daughter’s life at risk.

And, truthfully, he didn’t want to argue with her.

He had never intended to argue with her, but somehow, they ended up arguing again, getting stuck in the same cycle of tension.

So, he could only glare at her through the rearview mirror, then refocused on driving.

Laurent wasn’t the type to press an argument once she had won, so when he fell silent, she decided not to say anything more.

Dave realized that if he kept arguing with her, she would always retort with sharp words, but if he stayed quiet, she would also quiet down.

To avoid constant arguments, should he just hold back? Let her have the last word?

With their daughter asleep, the two fell into an uncomfortable silence, and the atmosphere in the car became heavy.

Laurent took out the book on foreign trade materials she had bought at Xinhua Bookstore earlier that day. She had originally planned to read it on the bus, but now it was the perfect time to make use of it. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

She focused on reading, quickly getting absorbed in the content.

Tomorrow was her first day at work, and she wanted to learn as much as possible to prepare herself for it.

However, just as she was concentrating, someone ahead broke her attention with their noise.

Dave, seeing her pull out a book and study, was so amused by it that it made him chuckle bitterly.

Curiously, he asked her,

"How much does your boss pay you every month? Are you really this dedicated?"

Laurent didn’t want to bother with him, so she simply pretended not to hear and continued reading her book.

What did her salary have to do with him?

But someone just wouldn’t let her read in peace, and asked her again,

"Ten thousand?"

Laurent was so angry that she almost wanted to hit him with the book.

He said ten thousand, clearly mocking her, ridiculing her.

She was just a small salesperson at a factory, a newbie at that. Did the factory director have a screw loose to pay her ten thousand?

Not to mention other companies, even in his Washington family business—could he really pay a newcomer ten thousand a month?

So, he clearly knew she couldn’t be earning ten thousand, but he said it on purpose—wasn’t that mocking her?

Grinding her teeth, she ignored him.

She thought that if she ignored him, he would get embarrassed and stop talking to her.

To her surprise, he continued, not letting up, and his tone seemed almost surprised.

"You don’t make ten thousand?"

Then, after thinking for a moment, he spoke again.

"I used to give you several tens of thousands for pocket money each month. No, actually, it was more than that. I gave you a bank card with no limit—you could spend however much you wanted."

Dave admitted it—he was deliberately speaking to mock her.

He wanted her to see and acknowledge that choosing divorce was a mistake.

When she was Mrs. Washington, she didn’t have to endure these hardships. Not to mention, after officially starting her job, how much judgment and criticism would she face as someone with no work experience?

He just wanted her to realize that leaving behind the comfortable life of being Mrs. Washington and choosing to fend for herself was simply self-inflicted hardship.

Laurent had no intention of talking much with him, but this time, she just couldn’t hold back. Without hesitation, she countered him.

"You don’t need to mock me like that. Yes, my salary is small now, but I’m happy because every penny I earn is through my own effort, not relying on anyone."

Laurent deliberately emphasized the last part—"not relying on anyone," especially not on him. She was no longer his possession.
