Chapter 86: Chapter 86- A long time ago

Dave was probably really enraged by her attitude. He took a step forward, grabbing her slender shoulder, and with a slight force, pulled her into his embrace. Lowering his head, he kissed her fiercely on her crimson lips.

He kissed her forcefully, his tongue expertly pushing open her teeth, invading her sweet mouth and sweeping inside.

Laurent almost used all her strength to push him away.

As she pushed him, her eyes had reddened. She quickly stepped back a couple of paces, creating distance between them. She wiped her lips with the back of her hand, the spot he had violated, and looked at him with disgust, accusing him.

"Dave, you’re really sick!"

"Disgusting!"

Then she quickly turned and ran into the bus station.

Some might say that since they had been that close before, having shared the most intimate moments, why was she now so upset over a kiss? Was it necessary for her to react so loudly, feeling wronged and angry?

Yes, Laurent was furious.

They used to be close, but they were still husband and wife.

Now they were divorced. For him to act like this toward her now was an insult to her.

Marriage, or lack thereof, was just a piece of paper.

With that title, one could behave like a beast in human form.

Without it, they had to revert to being upright individuals.

Even a slight breach of boundaries was a great crime.

After Laurent ran into the bus station, Dave stood in place, raising his hand to wipe his lips. It seemed like her sweet scent lingered on them.

It made his heart flutter.

He stood there for a moment before turning and returning to the car.

The little girl in the back seat had been observing everything outside carefully. After he started the car and drove off, she curiously asked him:

"Dad, do you like Mom?"

They say children speak without filters.

Dave was left speechless by his daughter’s question.

Did he like her?

He didn’t know how to answer that question, so he turned the question around and asked his daughter:

"Why do you ask?"

The little girl cupped her chin with both hands, looking cute as she answered:

"Auntie says, only when you like someone, will you want to kiss them."

Since her aunt had instilled this idea in her, the little girl naturally thought that when Dad hugged and kissed Mom earlier, it was a sign that he liked her.

Dave: "...!"

He felt like he needed to go back and give his sister a lesson. How could she teach his daughter such adult emotions? His little girl was barely three years old!

"Besides, Lilian herself has never been in a relationship. What does she know about liking someone or not?"

Yet the little girl kept urging him from the back,

"Isn’t that right, Daddy?"

Dave frowned as he drove and replied to his daughter,

"Your aunt doesn’t know anything. Don’t listen to her nonsense."

The little girl huffed,

"But Mommy used to say she really liked you, and you didn’t like her. That’s not fair!"

The little girl was standing up for her mother, but Dave became interested when he heard his daughter mention that Laurent used to say she liked him a lot.

"When did she say that?"

"A long time ago. There was this one time when Mommy was feeling down, and she told me."

The little girl tried hard to remember what her mom had said before.

"She said she really liked you. She liked the way you talked, the things you did... even the way you slept."

Hearing this, and thinking about how she had been acting towards him lately, Dave had only one thought.

A woman’s heart is as unfathomable as the ocean’s depths.

Back then, she was exactly as his daughter described, liking everything about him. No matter what he said or did, she adored him.

But now, no matter what he said or did, it seemed wrong in her eyes.

Her attitude towards him had taken a drastic turn. She scolded or hit him at the slightest provocation, or worse, didn’t even look at him.

This weekend alone, they’d seen each other several times, yet her gaze never once settled on him, not even a passing glance.

And just now, she even said that when he kissed her... it was disgusting?

Wasn’t it her, back then, who threw little tantrums or begged sweetly just for a kiss from him?

And now she found him disgusting?

The memory of her expression of utter disdain as she called him disgusting made his teeth ache with frustration.

After dropping his daughter off at his mother, Tiffany’s, Dave went to visit Clark.

He had a particularly strong thought in his mind now: he wanted Clark to get better as soon as possible.

It felt as though once Clark recovered, he would finally be free.

Ever since Clark had told him that it was her father, Daniel, who forced her to be with Bert, Dave had harbored a lingering sense of guilt. After all, Clark’s miserable fate was entirely caused by his father.

However, before Dave arrived, Clark had just had another outburst, tearing up sheet music and leaving the music room in complete disarray.

The reason? Nothing more than her caregiver going to the hospital and returning with news that she had seen Dave with his "family of three."

At first, Clark thought she had misheard. How could it be a "family of three"? He and Laurent were already divorced, weren’t they?

Besides, as far as she knew, Laurent had moved back to her hometown where her parents lived, cutting all ties with County City.

But when Clark saw the photo the caregiver had secretly taken, she realized it truly was them—a family of three.

He was holding their daughter, while Laurent walked beside them.

He still had that same expressionless look, and Laurent’s face was cold as well. There didn’t seem to be much interaction between them.

But to Clark, it was blindingly unbearable to look at.

She hated seeing the three of them together and hated seeing him holding their daughter. It reminded her that she would never be a mother in this lifetime.

Jealousy and resentment drove her to madness. She had been playing the piano, but in a fit of rage, she tore the sheet music in her hands to shreds.

Last night, she had called him, and he said he was out of town and couldn’t come back.

Now, seeing these photos, she had a guess. Most likely, he was with Laurent last night.

The caregiver mentioned that today they seemed to have visited the obstetrics department to see some friends. Fearing being caught, the caregiver didn’t dare follow them too closely.

The reason the caregiver helped her was that she had played the sympathy card.

She had confided in the caregiver, claiming that Laurent had stolen Dave from her by getting pregnant and forcing him into a shotgun marriage, leaving her heartbroken and abandoned.

Then, she was coerced by Dave’s father into being with Bert, who tortured her into her current state. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Clark didn’t know where she had gone wrong. After all, the last time Dave was in Japan, she pretended to have a relapse, and he rushed back overnight.

But now, even though he and Laurent were divorced, and he was still in the country, he hadn’t come to see her.

Sitting alone in the piano room filled with torn sheet music, Clark gritted her teeth as she pondered the reasons.

Eventually, she figured it out.

She thought it must be because of her erratic and hysterical state that he kept his distance. It must also be because she had been too frequently hysterical lately, and he had grown tired of her.

He was now divorced and a highly sought-after eligible bachelor.

If he were to remarry, given his family background and social standing, how could he possibly choose someone like her—a woman who had lost her sanity? Not to mention, his father had never wanted them to be together in the first place.

So, to be worthy of him, she had to recover quickly. Then she needed to find a respectable job, so that when he took her out in the future, she could present herself with dignity and pride. Only then would he be willing to stay by her side.

This time, his coldness had given her a sudden clarity.

When she had just returned to the country, perhaps her miserable state had stirred his sympathy. But over time, if she continued to wallow in negativity, he would undoubtedly grow to despise her.

Therefore, she had to adjust her strategy. She couldn’t keep pretending to be crazy and pitiful anymore.
