You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 89- Honesty and trustworthiness.
In Morrison’s eyes, Dave’s behavior—constantly saying he wanted to find a woman but ultimately running away in embarrassment—was a clear sign that there was someone in his heart.
And that woman wasn’t his first love.
If it were his first love, he could have easily gone to her to satisfy his needs. Why would he need Morrison to find him a woman?
Moreover, Dave hadn’t had any other women in these past years, so the only answer was that the person in his heart was his ex-wife, whom he had already divorced.
Because they were divorced, unable to have her again, that’s why he became so frustrated and irrational, asking Morrison to find him women.
This guy, he had fallen for Laurent without even realizing it.
Morrison stroked his chin with a sigh, feeling a little worried. With such low emotional intelligence, he could foresee how difficult it would be for Dave to win his ex-wife back.
What should he do?
His heart was soft, and suddenly he really wanted to help him. What should he do?
How about... he could step in and ask Laurent to act with him? If Dave tried to do it himself, it was obvious that Laurent would never agree.
After dinner, Laurent was reading in his room when he received a call from Vivian.
Vivian sounded quite frustrated on the other end.
"Laurent, what should we do? Not long after you guys left this afternoon, Dave sent a red envelope over, saying it’s for the child..."
"Why did he send you guys a red envelope?"
Laurent found it unreasonable. Vivian and her husband were his friends, but they had no relationship with him, and he was already divorced from her. Why was he getting involved? What did it mean for him to send them a red envelope?
Vivian was equally troubled.
"Who knows? We didn’t want to accept the red envelope, but the person insisted on giving it to us, saying he was just following the boss’s orders. We didn’t want to make things awkward for him."
"Crazy!"
Laurent muttered angrily on his end.
"We weren’t planning to invite Dave to the baby’s full-month celebration, but now that he sent a red envelope, it feels wrong not to invite him. But if we do invite him... you and Leonardo will be there that day..."
Vivian was almost driven mad by the situation. She was such a simple person, and now Dave’s red envelope had forced her into an awkward spot.
Laurent was also feeling troubled.
Having her ex-husband and former suitor in the same place... that scene would be unbearably awkward.
Moreover, many of the people attending were likely their classmates. Because Vivian and Frank ran their own company, their social circle was quite broad, and that day could practically be considered a semi-reunion.
However, aside from Vivian and a few others, no one knew that she had divorced Dave.
Laurent didn’t want others to know about it. Divorce wasn’t exactly something to be proud of. But if she and Dave were at the same event, anyone who saw how distant they were would easily figure it out.
On top of that, there were those recent photos of her with Clark that had been leaked, so it was likely that people would end up laughing at her.
She could face Leonardo without a problem, but seeing Dave again? That was something she really didn’t want to do.
Because, based on what she knew about Dave and his reactions from these few interactions, Laurent was sure that Dave wouldn’t miss the chance to make sarcastic remarks about her.
Seeing that Laurent had fallen silent, Vivian took a deep breath and finally said,
"Then let’s not invite him. If he says we’re rude, so be it. We don’t mind offending him."
"No."
Laurent disagreed. Vivian and Frank had just started their own company. If word got out that they had done something like this, it would seriously hurt their business development. No one would want to work with a company that didn’t understand basic manners.
So, in the end, she made a decision.
"Vivian, maybe I won’t go after all..."
If she didn’t go, there would be no unnecessary drama between Dave and Vivian, and things would remain peaceful.
Vivian disagreed.
"No, no, you can’t! You’re my child’s godmother, how can you not be there? Besides, Marylin and Zoey will be back too, let’s just consider it a little gathering. How can you not come?"
Vivian’s words made Laurent unsure of what to do. After thinking for a moment, she finally said,
"I still think it’s best if I don’t go. Let’s just wait and gather with Marylin and Zoey another day."
Vivian was insistent.
"No, no, no. I’ve got it! Here’s the plan. I’ll have Frank book a private room. I’ll just say I need to breastfeed the baby, so it’s inconvenient outside. We’ll stay in the private room, and you won’t have to meet Dave. That way, it won’t be awkward."
Laurent thought this was actually a good idea.
"Guess we’ll have to do it this way."
Finally, after sorting out this troublesome matter, Laurent talked a little more with Vivian before hanging up the phone.
The situation had completely ruined Laurent’s mood for reading.
She honestly didn’t know what Dave was trying to pull. She thought about calling him to ask, but then she didn’t want to talk to him. In the end, she simply threw her phone aside, took a shower, and went to bed.
Her new job was a huge challenge for Laurent. After checking in with the HR department at the factory on Monday, she was taken to the trade department by Samantha.
The trade department was on the second floor of the factory office building. But, the so-called trade department actually only had four people.
Besides Samantha, the newcomer (herself), and Maggie, there was another man, looking to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight. When he introduced himself, he said to just call him Norman.
Samantha pointed to the two empty desks and said to Laurent,
"The reason we were in such a rush to have you two start working is because the previous two salespeople resigned and left."
Samantha looked quite helpless.
"There’s not much we can do. Many recent college graduates see factories like ours as a stepping stone. They work here for a year or two to gain some experience, and then they jump to big-city trade companies."
"Of course, you could do the same. People always aim higher, and water always flows downhill. It’s understandable."
After saying this, Samantha turned to Laurent.
"Since Maggie isn’t here yet, you can pick whichever of these two desks you want. The other one will be for her."
Laurent chose the desk by the window. It had good lighting and an open view, which would be nice for relaxing by looking outside when work got tiring.
After showing her the office, Samantha took Laurent on a tour of the other departments and introduced her to the department heads.
By the end of the tour, Laurent’s head was spinning. She realized that, although this was just a small factory, there were many specialized departments, all categorized.
Samantha was a nice person. Seeing her rub her forehead, Laurent couldn’t help but laugh.
"Next, we’re heading to the workshop. That’s where things will really make your head spin."
And then she took her to the workshop.
The factory had four large production lines, but only two were running. Samantha explained that it was because there was a severe shortage of orders, so only two lines could be kept open.
And it wasn’t just their factory. This was the situation across all of China right now. As labor costs in China kept rising and processing costs shot up, many foreign clients couldn’t handle the high prices and started shifting their orders to other developing countries, like Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, where labor was cheaper.
Laurent felt a bit of a headache. Had she chosen the wrong industry? The foreign trade business was so tough right now, and she had jumped into it at such a challenging time.
But being negative and dejected was never her attitude toward life. She believed that everything was in one’s hands.
No matter how tough it was, some people were still managing to make it. Vivian and Frank had managed to run their small trading company very successfully, after all.
At this moment, Samantha glanced at her again and smiled, offering her some comfort.
"But don’t worry. As long as our prices aren’t ridiculously high, clients won’t easily move their orders. Long-term clients value integrity the most."
"That’s also one of the main reasons why the factory director and I are so confident in you. You didn’t exaggerate your work experience on your resume, and that’s really important," Samantha said to Laurent.
"We’d much rather have someone like you—honest and straightforward, even if you don’t have work experience—than someone with lots of experience but a silver tongue."
Her words touched Laurent deeply. She hadn’t expected that in the end, it was her honesty and openness that had helped her secure the job.
So, Laurent made sure to remember those two words: integrity.
Honesty and trustworthiness.
The two most basic principles for being a good person.
