Chapter 95: Chapter 95- You’re a superstar

Morrison, who had been watching Dave make the call to Laurent the whole time, had fainted in disbelief at the bar.

He had originally thought that Dave, calling Laurent under the influence, might confess his feelings or at least say something like "I can’t live without you." Morrison hadn’t expected any dramatic declarations of love, but a simple "I need you" should’ve been possible, right?

Instead, he ended up wishing her happiness. After all the emotional lessons he had given Dave throughout the night, this was the result: a simple wish for her to be happy with Leonardo!

After hanging up, Dave waved for the bartender and ordered another bottle, continuing to drink one glass after another.

Morrison didn’t stop him, nor did he want to. He thought, let him drink as much as he wants; after all, he had completely ruined everything already.

What’s drinking and messing things up? What’s saying the wrong thing under the influence? It’s exactly what he did!

By tomorrow, when he sobers up, he’ll probably regret it to the core. But it would be too late to fix things.

Fortunately, Morrison had the foresight to act. As soon as he heard the tone of the conversation go wrong, he immediately took out his phone and secretly recorded the call, so that when Dave later denies saying such hurtful things, he would have proof.

On the other end of the phone, Laurent, after hearing Dave say "I wish you happiness with Leonardo," felt the last bit of hope she had left for him vanish completely.

Heh.

He really didn’t love her.

If he had even a bit of feeling for her, how could he wish her happiness with Leonardo?

With a wry smile, she closed the U-disk and returned to her study, trying to calm herself and focus.

Maggie, who was admitted alongside Laurent, only reported to the factory on the Friday of the week Laurent started working, a full four days later. And since she started on a Friday, she worked for just one day before the weekend arrived, which made it much more relaxed and convenient.

Maggie had a lively and cheerful personality. After Samantha took her around the various departments and workshops as part of the usual procedure, Maggie had already become familiar enough with everyone to joke and laugh with them.

As for the remaining business-related issues, Samantha told Maggie to ask Laurent if there was anything she didn’t understand, since Laurent had been working for a few days longer and had already learned a lot.

If Laurent didn’t know the answer, they would go together to ask Samantha.

Laurent took Samantha’s instructions seriously and diligently taught Maggie everything she had learned over the past few days, answering every question without hesitation.

In fact, Laurent could sense that Samantha, with her calm and steady nature, didn’t particularly like Maggie’s somewhat scheming and lazy attitude, which was probably why she asked Maggie to ask Laurent first. It was clearly an attempt to limit direct interaction with Maggie.

However, Laurent didn’t mind; she considered teaching Maggie a way to reinforce the knowledge she had learned herself.

Compared to Laurent’s hard work, Maggie seemed much more laid-back.

Whenever there was nothing going on in the office, Laurent would go to the workshop to stay busy.

In addition to observing every step of the process, she would sometimes lend a hand with the workers in the workshop so that they would teach her more.

Sometimes, certain knowledge was accumulated by the experienced workers over years of practice. If you didn’t have a good relationship with them, they wouldn’t speak much, let alone teach you anything willingly.

However, Laurent spent so much time with them, didn’t put on airs, and naturally built good relationships with everyone. Plus, her own gentle and approachable nature allowed her to learn a lot of practical knowledge.

Maggie, on the other hand, only went to the workshop if it was absolutely necessary. Most of the time, she stayed in the office, which meant she didn’t even know the basic processes involved in making a piece of clothing.

She was a recent graduate, with no experience in the foreign trade industry, and since she didn’t put much effort into learning, the gap between her and Laurent soon became very apparent.

On the Friday of the second week, just before leaving work, Samantha indirectly criticized Maggie, which made Maggie very unhappy.

After Samantha left, Maggie came over to Laurent, seemingly trying to act coquettishly, and said:

"Laurent, please don’t work so hard next time, okay? You’ve made me look bad, and now the manager scolded me!"

Laurent could sense the dissatisfaction in Maggie’s words. She glanced at her and smiled lightly. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"Maggie, you’ve seen it too. I’ve been spending all my time in the workshop these days. I can tell you from my own experience that this approach will benefit us greatly. You might want to try it as well."

"Guess I’ll be the one getting criticized next time," Laurent said with a smile before turning and leaving.

Some people are just like that—if they don’t put in the effort, they don’t want others to either.

Because Leonardo had said he would come to see her over the weekend, Laurent immediately hid herself in the workshop. Luckily, there was a batch of goods that needed to be rushed to meet the deadline, and the workshop workers were working overtime. Otherwise, Laurent wouldn’t have known where to hide.

As for her daughter, she had already discussed it with her in advance.

When the little girl found out she wouldn’t be seeing her over the weekend, she immediately became upset and began to cry with a pout.

Laurent’s heart ached as tears welled up in her eyes, but there was nothing she could do.

After some effort from Tiffany, Lilian, and herself, they managed to calm the little girl down and help her accept that they wouldn’t be seeing each other this weekend.

It was also during this conversation with her daughter that Laurent found out Dave was not in the country this weekend. He had left for a business trip a few days ago and wouldn’t be back for several days.

Laurent let out a sigh of relief. At least she wouldn’t have to avoid Dave anymore; now, she only needed to avoid Leonardo.

Since that night when Dave had called and said "I wish you happiness," they hadn’t had any further contact. Laurent thought that the situation had become so awkward that it was for the best. She imagined he wouldn’t come back here, nor would he be willing to see her again. Likewise, she no longer wanted to see him either.

Laurent had thought about Leonardo and decided that if she kept avoiding him, it would give the impression that she had other feelings for him. It would be better to be open and interact with him just like they used to, without any awkwardness. So, when Leonardo called, Laurent answered. He told her he had arrived at the hotel and asked where she was, suggesting they meet for lunch.

Laurent truthfully told him, "I’m at the factory working overtime. I probably won’t have time for lunch."

Leonardo seemed displeased and protested, "You’re really working? I thought you just said that to push me away last time."

Laurent couldn’t reply. Indeed, that time she had said she was working to discourage him, but today, after arriving at the factory, she found several new emails urging her to meet the delivery deadlines. So, she had no choice but to stay and supervise the workers in the workshop.

"How about dinner? Let’s go out then," Leonardo suggested instead.

He continued, "How about we go for barbecue? The last time I had it here was during university."

During university, they had taken a trip together, and Laurent had invited the group to her town. She had shown them around and taken them to a barbecue joint, where they had enjoyed grilled food and beer, making it a memorable evening for everyone.

At that time, they were both students—young, carefree, and full of life. After a hearty meal and drinks, they went karaokeing and spent the night playing. Laurent hadn’t expected that Leonardo would still remember that night.

Laurent felt a headache coming on. "You’re a superstar now, Leonardo. You want me to take you to eat street barbecue? It’s so not your style. And what if we get spotted? Should I kiss my career goodbye?"

In the past, he could have eaten barbecue in public without a second thought, but now, as a celebrity, it was no longer appropriate. Eating street food, especially with a woman, could easily lead to rumors and scandal. Laurent had never experienced such situations, but she had seen how celebrities were constantly bombarded by gossip and paparazzi. If they were caught dining together, she feared the backlash.

Leonardo, however, seemed unconcerned. "What’s the problem? Can’t I still have friends? Can’t I eat barbecue?"

Laurent, still firm in her refusal, responded, "If you really want barbecue, I’ll buy some and bring it to you. But I’m not taking you out."

Leonardo chuckled on the other end of the phone. "What if they catch you entering my room instead? Won’t that be worse?"

Laurent huffed, "Exactly. You shouldn’t have come looking for me in the first place."

They had always been close friends, and Laurent’s tone was casual and easy, like she was talking to a buddy.

"Alright, alright. I’ll go with your plan. You can bring me barbecue tonight," Leonardo finally agreed, though it was clear that where they ate didn’t matter much to him—what mattered was simply spending time with her.

Laurent agreed to his request, knowing full well that she couldn’t avoid the meal with him. It was a chance to reconnect with an old friend after many years. Given Leonardo’s fame, eating out wasn’t an option, and she certainly couldn’t invite him to her home— that would be too conspicuous.

Thus, she decided she would go to his place for the meal. Laurent trusted that, with Leonardo’s experience, he would know how to keep things low-key and avoid being caught by the press. Besides, no one would expect him to visit a small town like hers.

Laurent had planned everything carefully, but she never anticipated that while avoiding reporters at the hotel, she would run into Morrison.

She had a big bag of barbecue in one hand and a plastic bag filled with loose beer in the other when she walked into the hotel lobby. Just as she was making her way through, Morrison, along with a few business-looking men, was walking toward the exit. The two of them found themselves facing each other right in the middle of the lobby.

The reason Laurent was carrying the beer was because Leonardo had specifically requested it. While he could have easily ordered bottled or canned beer from the hotel, he insisted on the loose kind. Laurent wasn’t particularly fond of the idea, but she complied.

Laurent briefly considered pretending she hadn’t seen Morrison, but since they were already face-to-face, ignoring him would seem disrespectful. So, she came to a stop, trying to keep her composure.
