Chapter 98: Chapter 98- ridiculous and pitiful

At that moment, Laurent’s phone rang again. She picked it up and saw that it was still Tiffany’s number, likely another call from her daughter.

After answering, she indeed heard the little girl on the other end, urging her:

"Mom, have you gotten home yet?"

Laurent felt a bit helpless:

"Mom hasn’t left yet. I’m still having dinner with a friend, just started eating—"

The little girl’s voice already had a hint of crying in it:

"But I really, really miss Grandma and Grandpa. I want to see them right now!"

Laurent was on the verge of breaking down. She couldn’t just leave the moment she sat down, could she?

So, she tried to comfort her daughter:

"Emma, be good. Mom will stay for a little longer and then head home. Can you be patient and wait a bit? Or, you can call Grandma and Grandpa first and hear their voices?"

"No, no!"

The little girl refused to listen at all:

"I want to see Grandma and Grandpa. I don’t want to just talk to them on the phone!"

Clearly, Leonardo also heard the little one causing a fuss on the other end. He just sat there, his deep, cold gaze fixed on Laurent.

Laurent was getting a little irritated by her daughter’s tantrum and sharply scolded her:

"Emma Washington!"

She couldn’t understand why her daughter was being so unreasonable tonight, insisting on video calling her parents.

But when she scolded her, the little girl immediately burst into tears.

Tiffany took the phone from her:

"Laurent, you just enjoy your dinner with your friend. I’ll handle Emma here, don’t worry about it."

With the little girl causing such a fuss, Laurent didn’t have the heart to continue eating. She just spoke to Tiffany:

"Thank you, Tiffany. Please tell her I’ll be home soon."

"Okay, I’ll hang up now."

Tiffany said and hung up the phone. Laurent could hear the little girl crying on the other end.

After the call, Laurent felt a pang of discomfort. She raised her hand and rubbed her forehead, feeling guilty.

She already felt bad for not seeing her daughter this weekend, and now she had made her cry like this...

Leonardo suddenly spoke up:

"You should go back. It’s no good for the child to keep crying like this."

Laurent looked up at Leonardo, then glanced at the barely touched barbecue.

"I’m really sorry—"

Leonardo waved his hand and then asked:

"Has your daughter always been like this, throwing tantrums and crying?"

Laurent quickly explained:

"No, she’s usually very well-behaved. I don’t know what’s going on tonight. Maybe it’s because I didn’t visit her this weekend. She’s probably upset about that."

Laurent understood her daughter’s unusual behavior tonight in this way.

Leonardo smiled and didn’t say anything more. He stood up and saw her off.

After Laurent left, Leonardo stood there and let out a cold, mocking laugh.

What was all this about wanting to video call her parents? Clearly, someone had been secretly manipulating their daughter into causing trouble for her, with the intention of preventing her from being alone with him.

Turning back to his seat, the sarcasm in Leonardo’s eyes became even more evident.

Didn’t Dave say he didn’t love her?

Then what did these little tricks mean behind the scenes?

It had been five years, and he hadn’t cherished her. Now that they were divorced, it seemed he was still holding on to something, wanting to make up for it.

Didn’t he find it ironic?

After leaving the hotel, Laurent quickly hailed a taxi to rush home, fearing her daughter would start crying again if she kept waiting.

Once she got home, Alex and Cassy were both surprised:

"Aren’t you supposed to be having dinner with friends? Why are you back so soon?"

Laurent hadn’t told her parents that she was having dinner with Leonardo, because they knew him, and in the past, they had even supported her relationship with him.

If they found out she was reconnecting with Leonardo, who knew how they might react?

As for how her parents knew Leonardo, it was because of a university trip. They had come for a day trip, and she invited everyone to her house for dinner. The trip had included her four roommates, as well as Leonardo, Frank, and their friends.

So, her parents had met Leonardo before, and back then, everyone had been teasing them about getting together, especially Vivian. That was when her parents first became aware of Leonardo’s feelings for her.

However, after she married Dave, she lost contact with Leonardo, and the topic of him was closed. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

The reason her parents had liked Leonardo was that they felt they were of a similar age, came from similar backgrounds, and looked good together. He was also ambitious and, most importantly, he liked her so much. They believed he would treat her well in the future.

To her parents, finding such a partner for their daughter seemed like a great outcome.

However, no matter how much they liked Leonardo, it couldn’t compare to the fact that she didn’t have feelings for him.

This contrasted sharply with her later decision to marry Dave, despite her parents’ objections.

People often behave like this: they have to hit rock bottom and admit their decisions were wrong only after the fact.

"Emma said she misses you and wants to video call you."

As Laurent was changing her shoes, she explained to her parents. Alex was quite surprised:

"Didn’t we just see her last weekend? Why does she miss us so soon? Ah, she really is my precious granddaughter, all that pampering wasn’t in vain!"

Alex happily walked over to her side, eager to video call his granddaughter.

At first, Laurent didn’t think much of it. She simply assumed that maybe her daughter really missed her grandparents.

But after her father’s comment, she suddenly felt something was off.

Indeed, her daughter had just visited last weekend and spent time with her grandparents. Now, suddenly crying and causing a scene like this felt somewhat unrealistic.

It was also odd because just a few days ago, when Laurent spoke to her daughter on the phone, the little one had asked to talk to her grandfather for a long time.

Moreover, her daughter wasn’t the type to throw tantrums or cry for no reason. Usually, when something happened, Laurent would patiently explain things to her, and she would understand and respond maturely. But tonight...

She didn’t want to believe that Dave was behind all this!

The thought made Laurent angry. She quickly dialed Tiffany back, hoping to ask her daughter what was going on, but Tiffany told her on the other end of the line:

"Emma kept crying earlier, but after I calmed her down, she fell asleep."

Laurent had no choice but to give up. She couldn’t keep questioning Tiffany, and if this was indeed something Dave had orchestrated behind the scenes, Tiffany wouldn’t tell her the truth anyway.

"What’s wrong? Didn’t she want to video call us?"

Alex asked, puzzled, as he saw Laurent hang up the phone.

Laurent didn’t have much to say to her parents. She simply said,

"Tiffany said she’s asleep."

Cassy glanced at her, asking,

"Came back so soon, didn’t you eat? Should I make something for you?"

Laurent nodded. She had only eaten a little at Leonardo’s place before being interrupted by her daughter’s call.

Cassy went to the kitchen to cook, while Alex stayed in the living room watching TV. Laurent went to her room to change, but as she did, she remembered the scene she had witnessed with Morrison at the hotel. Could it be that Morrison told Dave?

Laurent thought it was probably Morrison. That guy always seemed like a sly fox—always smiling, but actually very cunning.

Her daughter had cried so much that she had lost her composure for a moment and hadn’t really thought through how odd everything seemed.

But if Dave really had instructed their daughter, then why? They were already divorced. He was also getting close to Clark, yet he still came here to cause trouble.

Were all men like this—ridiculous and pitiful—thinking that a woman who once belonged to them could never belong to someone else, even if they no longer wanted her?
