Chapter 168: Yes, yes. My wife was right

The next morning, Eva woke up, entered her space to get ready for the day, and wore comfortable shorts and a loose top.

While braiding her hair, she left her tent to have breakfast.

"Good morning." Julian pressed a kiss on her forehead.

Eva hummed in response; her eyes fixed on the bun and the bowls of noodles on the table.

"Good morning. We’re going to tour the island today, but all of them remains on the shore... don’t bring them into your space," Ethan said as he tousled her hair slightly.

Eva looked at him in surprise. "What if they face danger while we’re gone? They still need to build the stronghold."

"We aren’t leaving them here alone. Aaron isn’t following us into the island," Ethan responded, motioning for the drowsy Aaron, who was trying hard to keep his eyes from closing.

Eva became increasingly uncertain while observing him, questioning whether these people were truly safe under her brother’s watch.

"Alright then," Eva nodded, picked up a bun, and took a bite.

"Hmm!" Her tongue tasted the rich flavor of crab. Her eyes brightened with satisfaction as she took a bigger bite.

Julian noticed she enjoyed the bun and mentally planned to ask the chef to make more for their trip.

"We should bring the chef along. Our meals are secured, and he could gather edible plants along the way to plant," Eva suggested after swallowing her food.

Her reasoning seemed sound, but she cared more about the food he would make along the way.

"Just say you want to eat," Julian muttered with a knowing smile after he noticed the flicker of guilt in her eyes.

"Eat your food. It’s not like you won’t eat along the way... it’s not as if I’m the only one who’ll finish everything," Eva murmured under her breath as she bit into another bun.

Ethan, who had heard her clearly, shook his head with a smile before returning his attention to his meal. He knew that if they didn’t keep an eye on her, she might end up eating their share as well.

The poor chef had imagined himself relaxing during the days Eva wouldn’t be here, but suddenly felt a shiver run down his spine.

He rubbed his arm, shook off the feeling, and mentally planned his vacation.

He only realized he was tagging along with them when Julian called him out.

"Master... the other chef is free," the chef hinted in a trembling voice, suggesting that Julian should reconsider his decision.

"But my wife loves your cooking more. Alright, get ready, we leave in ten minutes," Julian said firmly, patting his shoulder and leaving before he could respond.

’(╥﹏╥) Why does my cooking suit the madam’s taste so well? There goes my vacation—why?!’ He groaned inwardly, even as a flicker of pride rose at having surpassed the other chef.

Eva’s eyes lit up when she saw the chef. If neither of her husbands knew it was because of the food, they might think she was having an affair with him.

The man shivered, feeling the air was a little colder than usual. His gaze accidentally met Ethan and Julian’s cold stares, and quickly, he looked away.

"Madam." He greeted Eva politely, with his hands clutching his bag straps tightly, revealing how nervous he truly was.

"Okay, let’s get going," Ethan announced and mounted his wolf, signaling for the chef to do the same.

Julian mounted Eva’s beast, with his snake wrapped around his ankle like bracelet, and they all hurried toward the forest.

Sunlight filtered through the rustling leaves as their beast’s paws thundered on the muddy grass ground.

They traveled for hours without stopping, and Eva almost doubted they were here to explore the area—she turned her head sideways to catch a glimpse of where they were.

"Don’t strain your neck, we’ve already checked this area yesterday," Julian explained when he noticed Eva’s confusion.

"Oh. Did you find anything unique then? I thought you guys hadn’t gone far yesterday," Eva asked, curious and eager to make small talk.

"Nothing much, just the usual tall trees and massive beasts. But they didn’t attack us; they mainly focused on eating grass and fruit, which is a relief compared to what we’ve seen before. Still, we need to go further and find out if it’s really safe here."

Eva listened to him talk, her eyes taking in the blur of trees rushing past.

"You’ve covered so much ground already—why haven’t you reached the island’s edge?" Eva wondered aloud, beginning to suspect the island was much larger than they had assumed and wouldn’t be explored in just a week.

"Hmm. At least we brought the chef with us... we won’t starve," Julian replied casually. He didn’t seem too bothered by the thought of spending months there—he only hoped their efforts wouldn’t be in vain.

Eva snorted, recalling the breakfast incident, and said, "Hmph, I was right to invite the chef along."

"Yes, yes. My wife was right," Julian said, tousling her hair with a placating smile.

Eva slapped his hand away, annoyed by his tone, feeling like she had punched cotton, and her small victory of being right disappeared.

"Tch." She clicked her tongue and closed her eyes to rest.

Julian’s lips tugged into a slight, smug smile before he pulled her closer into his arms.

Thirty minutes later, Ethan, who was leading, stopped. The mark he made on the tree was a few meters from where they were standing.

"We are here," Ethan called out, signaling for the chef to get down.

Eva opened her eyes and dismounted from her beast, stretching her numb limbs.

Now they stopped, and Eva listened to the faint sounds in the forest — the chirping of birds and insects.

Distant roars of beasts and the gentle crunch of dry leaves underfoot.

Julian stepped on a dry twig, which snapped loudly, causing Eva to turn toward him.

"Should we keep going on foot? My butt is already sore from sitting too long," Eva complained as she rubbed her butt lightly.

Julian shook his head in response, then explained, "It would only delay us; the least we can do is rest along the way."

Ethan walked over to them, and Eva’s gaze immediately fixed on his transformed ears, her fingers itching to touch them.

Ethan paused; Eva’s sparkling, intense gaze on his wolf ears made him hesitate to move forward.

Eva didn’t leave him much choice and moved toward him in long strides, her fingers reaching right for his ears.

"Haa~ so soft." Eva’s eyes squinted in satisfaction as she rubbed his ears.

Ethan quickly grasped her hand in place before things went out of hand. "Later. I need to investigate this part of the forest." He almost begged as he tried to break free from her grip.

"Then, you will have to turn into a cat later," Eva compromised, her eyes filled with longing as she stared at his ears, which twitched and grew hotter under her gaze.

"Hmm. Okay, I promise," Ethan muttered with relief clear in his voice, and quickly moved away from her before she changed her mind.

He had nearly forgotten how fixated Eva was on his cat form—he was practically going bald from all the petting.

Ethan used his sharp hearing to listen quietly around him, noting where he heard growls from beasts.

""We need to head east from here. I have to determine whether the beast is truly dangerous or something we can handle easily," he explained to Eva. Julian was already accustomed to this approach, since they had explored the same way yesterday.

Eva hummed, tearing her gaze from his drooping furry ears and increasing her pace to follow along.

The chef said nothing and picked up some spice he thought was usable.

Ethan and Julian provoke any beast they encounter to gauge its strength and save some for lunch and dinner.

Time moved slowly, and as the sky darkened, they built a fire to light up the area while setting up camp.

Days like this went by, and they faced many beasts and spiders, which they had to eliminate.

Meanwhile, the Oasis City became lively, with people tripping into town with their luggage.
