Only My Weapons Level UP
Chapter 67: Hesitation
"Hey, we should bring them already; a lot of time has already passed. No one else will come."
"It is too soon; we can’t show only this many results. The airplane that turned around will make them feel more urgency about the situation, and more people will come."
Terry and Vanessa looked at each other. While they were close to the border, the accent of those people wasn’t from outside... and their tone was suspicious. They already knew that those guys were up to no good, but those words only picked their interest more.
Eventually, Terry and Vanessa got close enough to see the camp fully.
Terry and Vanessa cautiously approached the clearing, their eyes widening as they took in the scene before them. In the dim light, they could make out a group of individuals who appeared to be hunters, their rugged appearance indicating a life spent in the wilderness. They were gathered around a campsite, their tents pitched haphazardly nearby.
But it was the sight of the bound and captive figures that caught their attention. The prisoners, their bodies completely enveloped in thick steel rings, stood in a line, their movements restricted by the heavy restraints. The rings seemed impossibly thick, their sheer size and weight defying any logical explanation. Each person’s mobility was severely restricted, rendering them helpless and at the mercy of their captors.
The metal rings wrapped around the captives’ bodies created an eerie sight. The dim light reflected off the steel, casting a metallic gleam that accentuated their vulnerability. It was clear that these restraints were designed to immobilize, imprisoning their victims in an iron grip.
"They must be the guild masters... and some questionable individuals," Terry thought.
Terry and Vanessa stayed hidden, silently observing the scene for a little while longer. They watched the group of people, trying to gather more information and confirm their suspicions. They noticed certain behaviors and actions that raised red flags as they observed.
The hunters seemed indifferent to the captives’, showing no signs of empathy or concern, even when they saw them trembling due to the cold or sweating for some other reason. Their body language and demeanor gave off an air of hostility and malevolence. It became clear to Terry and Vanessa that these individuals were not the allies they had hoped for but rather enemies who reveled in the torment and imprisonment of others.
With this realization, Terry and Vanessa exchanged a knowing look, their expressions hardening with determination. They understood that their presence in this place was no longer one of observation but of intervention. It was time to act...
"What do you think we will gain this time?"
"Who knows? We only brought small fry hunters to them in the last few weeks, while we are bringing some of the big guns. We didn’t do that by ourselves. Those guys on the other sides of the portals are playing carrot and stick with us."
Just as Terry was ready to launch his attack, the enemies suddenly revealed a shocking truth. In simple words, they confessed that they were not acting on their own accord but rather serving unknown beings from other worlds. These beings had granted them immense power in exchange for their loyalty and service.
"Their means of giving power are weird, but at least it is a sure-fire way to get stronger without risks. Besides, their technology and knowledge are way above ours; Earth is done for; it is time to change sides."
Terry and Vanessa paused, their expressions filled with surprise and confusion. The enemies explained that their allegiance to these otherworldly beings was driven by their desire for power and the promise of unimaginable abilities. They believed that by serving these beings, they could gain an advantage over others and fulfill their own ambitions.
The revelation left Terry and Vanessa with mixed emotions. On the one hand, they understood the allure of power and the temptation it presented. On the other hand, they knew the potential dangers and consequences of blindly serving unknown beings from other worlds.
With a resolute determination, Terry and Vanessa prepared themselves for a confrontation that extended beyond mere combat. They would face not only these enemies but also the mysteries and dangers lurking in the shadows of the unknown beings from other worlds.
Terry and Vanessa prepared to charge and reveal themselves. They had to do that as quickly as possible in order not to give the enemies a chance to fight back. Still, they managed to pull that off, even though Terry reached them in half a second.
As the enemies unleashed their arsenal of fire attacks, ice spells, and earth magic against Terry and Vanessa, the battlefield became a chaotic battleground. Terry, fueled by determination and unwavering resolve, swiftly countered their every move with precise strikes and evasive maneuvers.
Terry blocked them with his arms since most of them targeted his head, and while he felt the weight of those projectiles, he barely felt their effects; they weren’t hot, cold, or sharp enough to surpass his defenses.
It didn’t take long for him to reach one of the enemies and then punch his face and crack its skull... they might have power, but their defense was seriously lackluster. In the end, the following four enemies used their spells to create barriers between them and Terry. Still, he charged through firewalls, ice walls, and earth walls without hesitation.
However, amidst the intensity of the fight, Vanessa found herself hesitating. Her eyes locked onto the faces of the enemy combatants, seeing fear and desperation reflected in their eyes. Despite their allegiance to the unknown beings and their menacing attacks, she couldn’t ignore their humanity.
As fireballs hurtled towards Terry, Vanessa’s hand faltered, unable to unleash her lightning bolts with the same conviction as Terry. She grappled with a profound internal conflict, torn between her duty as a fighter and the weight of her empathy. She questioned whether there might be another way to resolve the situation without resorting to taking lives.
