Chapter 35: Fighting The Bureau

"Is that them?" a woman asked, her hands behind her back. She was the Marshal in charge of the operation.

"Yes, it’s them," another woman answered. This one was the blonde one from before in Team Blue Crow.

"Who is the third one?" the Marshal asked, pointing at Scarlett.

"I don’t know who she is, but I am positive the other masked one is the imp!" the blonde woman cried. "Please, get them right now and avenge me!"

"I should have known that bitch would double-cross me," the leader of Blue Crow hissed angrily, staring at his teammate. "Why did you do it? Give me a reason for this betrayal!"

"Did you really believe I would let that brat go scot-free after he killed my Shadow Panther? I want him dead! This is your only chance to surrender. We’re promised that the Bureau will drop most of your charges if you comply right now. Don’t be foolish."

The Blue Crow leader spat on the ground.

"They will just go back on their word. I am not an idiot."

Meanwhile, Scarlett leaned on Luke for safety as the Bureau surrounded them. "Did you really kill that woman’s beast?" she asked.

"Yes, I did," Luke sighed. "And I can see that all actions do have consequences."

The Marshal on the line did not wait any longer. She raised her hand and commanded, "Get them!"

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Soldier Ants trudged forward from all directions, holding electric batons.

"We have a fighting chance here," the one-eyed man said to Luke and Scarlett as he summoned his Flame-Wing Hawk. "The Bureau wouldn’t waste its best resources on a low threat like us, so I hope you two are really as powerful as advertised."

The hawk screeched as it soared into the air, catching everyone’s attention.

"Don’t do anything stupid! Just surrender!" yelled the blonde woman.

"They’re attacking! Fight back!"

However, the Bureau couldn’t do much as fire chains came out from the ground and dragged all the helicopters down in a blaze of ruin. Scarlett was smart to use Echo to imitate her beast rather than summon the phoenix. Why? Because she was the only summoner in the country with a phoenix. It would immediately give her identity away.

Chaos ensued on the field as Luke, Scarlett, and Blue Crow resisted the Bureau. The Flame-Wing attacked the Soldier Ants from above with flaming projectiles while its master fought any human officer.

"Release Godrick," the Marshal ordered when she realized that her forces were not enough to suppress the targets.

Growlll.

Scarlett turned around and squinted into the darkness near a transport van. Suddenly, a mutated werewolf pounced at her, a monster as large as an elephant. But Scarlett cushioned the impact with a disc-shaped shield. Immediately, she and Luke engaged in combat with the creature.

Godrick was a specimen currently being transported to a facility for scientific reasons. What was this Marshal thinking, releasing a bio-weapon just to deal with a couple of divers?

Even the Blue Crow leader knew that wasn’t his fight. But he noticed something other than the scale of the battle.

"How come these two are only just beginners? Look at their form. I can recognize that technique from the girl. That is a special martial art taught only to those along the Golden Order lineage... Hello, I have been dealing with very important people this whole time..."

CRASHHH!

The werewolf crashed into some ATVs near Blue Crow, but the beast bounced right back up relentlessly with glowing eyes. Scarlett flew straight at it to intercept, giving Luke the window he needed.

"Hey, Amigo, punch me hard and as many times as you can," Luke said, exposing his armored chest.

Amigo looked down at his tiny hands, unsure he could do anything, but he didn’t want to disappoint.

"Yes, master!" he huffed, punching the plates as furiously fast as his little arms could move, generating energy.

Once the core was charged, Luke turned around, and Scarlett flew out of his way just as unforgiving 〖Energy Cannon〗 blasted forward. The white beam tore through the werewolf, ripping through the terrain, obliterating the hills, and vaporizing the ATVs—shredding whatever Luke pointed his chest at.

"The car is that way, Luke. Let’s go," Scarlett urged in the aftermath.

Luke quickly followed her, though his body ached like hell. He looked behind him at the flaming parking lot, searching for the Blue Crow.

"What about your friend?" Scarlett asked, but the airport was silent.

******

Luke and Scarlett drove to Montclair Academy because of how late it was to go anywhere else.

"This is my room," Luke said as he presented his dorm space. It was nothing compared to the luxury Scarlett was used to, but the room was still modest for a guy.

He fetched two glasses of water to help them wind down after the battle. While he was getting the water, Scarlett looked around, sighing whenever she remembered Luke dragged her into this mess.

"Are you sure they won’t identify us?" she asked anxiously.

"The country has bigger crises than two summoners at an old airport," Luke replied as he handed her a glass.

Scarlett was stunned by his calm attitude.

"So we just resume school tomorrow like nothing happened?"

"I guess so," Luke answered, stroking his jaw.

Scarlett’s eyebrows twitched, but she just turned the other way so Luke wouldn’t see. His words made no sense.

Before tonight, they were just ex-fiancés after a failed arranged marriage and two parallel lines that had never crossed. But after colliding at this juncture, Luke was saying they could just go back to normal?

Or wait. Did he intend to accommodate this new development moving forward?

The thought of having a real emotional connection for the first time lifted Scarlett’s spirit—and also her libido.

Thankfully, Luke broke the tension as he prepared the shower for her and handed over his cleanest towel. Scarlett’s eyes lingered on him before she accepted the hospitality and headed into the bathroom.

Luke sat down on his bed and brought Amigo out of his jacket.

"Alright, Amigo. Bring out all the cores."

"Master, here is the loot!" Amigo squeaked proudly, his tail wagging. "Eleven monster cores from the golems and the gargoyles and everything else. And look, look! The giant one in the middle is the dungeon core!"

"Are you ready to eat?" Luke asked.

"Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!"

"Calm down, shell-head," Luke said. "You can have all eleven monster cores, but the dungeon core belongs to me. After all, the Aeon density here can help me replenish my energy. Don’t bite your tongue now."

He retreated Amigo back into his soul space and then proceeded to absorb the dungeon core himself.

〖1 Mythic Draft Card has been generated!〗

"A Mythic Draft Card?! Jackpot! A new beast is officially on the way."

Since he had reached Lv. 10, Luke wanted to check out the Draft Card to find out about this new mythic beast, but Scarlett’s silhouette stole his attention. She had just come out of the bathroom, wearing nothing but the towel from her chest to her upper thighs.

Luke’s throat dried up.

Scarlett looked surreal and beyond beautiful. Her skin glistened with water, and her red hair was damp and sticky. Luke couldn’t believe how one could appear so delicate and fierce at the same time. Scarlett was just the right package.

"You must need some privacy to dress yourself," Luke said quickly as he started toward the bathroom.

"What towel are you going to use?" Scarlett asked. "You gave me your only one."

"I’ll just air-dry on my own after the shower."

Scarlett grimaced at the thought of it.

"What am I supposed to wear now? My clothes are dirty."

Luke presented an oversized T-shirt from his drawer, big enough for a girl as tall as her. But when he handed it over, Luke knew her curves would take a lot of the fabric. He vanished into the bathroom before he lost his mind.

While he was bathing, Scarlett knocked on the door and handed him the towel. Luke thanked her for her generosity, but he also wished she hadn’t.

The towel was soaked in her body scent, smelling so feminine and sweet like a cherry tree grown around lilies. Luke’s body became hot and hungry for warmth.

When he remembered he had the campus’s flower in his room, Luke thought he had every right to feel this way. This was the same girl every guy dreamt of being with, including his half-brother, Adrian.

He returned to the room after wiping his body and changing into loose pants. On the bed, Scarlett was already lying down, trying to pose as protectively and modestly as possible, but the shirt he gave her was doing a bad job of hiding her.

Most of her legs were exposed all the way up to her laps, presenting nice thighs with a pink undertone that made them look like cake, while her nipples pressed against the fabric.

Scarlett saw Luke staring, but she stayed quiet and looked away as if she were nervous too.

Since Luke wasn’t a virgin, he knew the silence meant an invitation from her, because Scarlett Trump would never allow herself to be this vulnerable around any random guy.

So, his big question was: Was it possible to consummate an already cancelled marriage?
