Chapter 1299 - 750: Protected by the Mother-in-law? Directly Probing the Father-in-law’s Preferences? (Second Update)
When Jiang Chengsi came to the Si Family’s place, even Si Qingxiao hadn’t been informed in advance, let alone You Hongxian.
Tang Wan called her to say the screen was finished and asked when it’d be convenient to send it over with some staff. Si Qingxiao had been planning to redecorate the house a bit before her mother’s birthday, add some fresh touches.
Tang Wan meant to send employees over, so Si Qingxiao didn’t think much of it. But when the agreed time came, the one doing the home delivery turned out to be Jiang Chengsi.
"Why did you come?" Si Qingxiao even sneaked a low question at him.
"My sister-in-law didn’t have time, so she sent me over as the supervisor."
There was no way Tang Wan would take the initiative to send Jiang Chengsi over; it was just that he happened to find out about it, and someone then volunteered himself for the job.
With free labor, there was no way Tang Wan wouldn’t use it. Besides, this was a gift for Miss Si. Jiang Chengsi would naturally take it more seriously and pay extra attention, so leaving it to him was more reassuring.
"Chengsi?" You Yunzhi saw him coming in and greeted him with a smile. "How come it’s you delivering the stuff?"
"My little aunt just gave birth, my sister-in-law’s pretty busy. I happened to be free, so I came to help out." Jiang Chengsi glanced at the living room. "Uncle’s not home?"
"He went to the office."
Jiang Chengsi looked like a very considerate older brother, helping to ease his younger brother and sister-in-law’s burdens.
Once the screen was properly placed, Si Qingxiao checked it over and found no issues, then signed the paperwork. The studio staff had other things to do, so they rushed off. Jiang Chengsi, however, stayed and had a cup of tea.
"These chestnut puffs were just made. Try some." You Yunzhi had always liked Jiang Chengsi, and since she hadn’t seen him for a while, she was even more enthusiastic toward him.
"Thank you, Auntie." Jiang Chengsi caught Si Qingxiao out of the corner of his eye. "Haven’t seen you in so long, Auntie, and you look even younger and prettier now."
"At my age I can still be pretty? Don’t try to sweet-talk me."
Though that’s what You Yunzhi said, being called young still made her secretly quite happy.
Si Qingxiao sat off to the side, not saying anything, just quietly complaining in her heart:
Since when did his mouth get this sweet.
He’s so good at coaxing people—why was he climbing walls and sneaking around back in Pingjiang?
Thinking about Jiang Chengsi climbing over walls, Si Qingxiao couldn’t hold back and burst into laughter.
"You girl, what are you laughing at?" You Yunzhi asked.
"Nothing." She shook her head with a smile.
Jiang Chengsi guessed what she was thinking about, pressed his lips together, and felt a bit annoyed inside.
Right at that moment, You Hongxian arrived.
...
You Hongxian wasn’t exactly in full formal wear today, but his outfit was still quite refined. He was carrying a bunch of things in his hands, only as soon as he stepped through the door and saw Jiang Chengsi, the corner of his mouth twitched hard, and his smile immediately turned a bit distorted.
Ever since he entered society, he’d always had the Si Family’s protection and had never really suffered any losses.
Being thrown out, person and gifts together, was a first.
And by some junior too. This grudge was basically set in stone.
You Yunzhi took in the subtle change in his expression, lowered her eyes, and took a sip of tea.
"Mr. You, we meet again. What a coincidence." Jiang Chengsi stood up to greet him.
That single "again" carried a lot of meaning.
"When did you two meet before?" You Yunzhi asked with a gentle smile in her eyes.
"It was just a random encounter, nothing much." You Hongxian rushed to answer.
Jiang Chengsi couldn’t quite figure out what exactly the relationship was between You Hongxian and the Si Family, and he didn’t expose what he’d gone to Pingjiang to do. He only nodded along. After all, this was Si Qingxiao’s biological uncle, and he was still thinking about giving the man some face.
"Chengsi, you’ve been to our place so many times and still haven’t really looked around, have you? How about letting Xiaoxiao show you around a bit? Stay and have lunch with us." You Yunzhi’s words were clearly meant to send the two of them away.
Jiang Chengsi had just been worrying about not having a chance to be alone with Si Qingxiao; what she said was exactly what he wanted.
"Then I’ll trouble Miss Si." Jiang Chengsi smiled at Si Qingxiao.
Si Qingxiao nodded in response and led him toward a side corridor that connected to the Si Family’s backyard.
Jiang Chengsi had wanted to ask if their backyard had any secluded corners where you could do things without anyone seeing. But just as they turned the corner, Si Qingxiao suddenly stopped.
"Why aren’t we—"
"Shh!" She pressed a finger to her lips and gestured for him to be quiet, then hid at the corner of the hallway, clearly planning to eavesdrop on the conversation between the two people in the living room.
Jiang Chengsi had no choice but to follow along and play the thief with her.
**
There were only You Yunzhi and You Hongxian in the living room. As soon as You Yunzhi put down her cup, he hurriedly stood up and diligently helped her pour water.
"Sis, did you ask me to come today because you wanted to talk about your birthday?"
You Yunzhi’s fingers rubbed the cup. The freshly poured hot water was still a bit too hot to hold. She lifted it to her lips and gently blew at the white steam curling up from the rim.
