Chapter 70: Grudge to Bear
"We are looking for a man, he’s about this tall, has short blonde hair, and he probably came around with a carriage and two horses. His name is Leon" Xenia described Leon with gestures to another small woman, who was a trader. She stood behind a stall displaying different fruits.
"Ohh yes! A man that fit that description came into this town a few weeks ago, I think he eventually found accommodation on Ellan Street." The woman spoke cheerfully.
"Oh, and where might that be?" Asked Light, jumpimg into the conversation.
"Just down the road, take a left turn, get to the end—then take a right turn.
’Easy enough.’ Jacob mused, still looking around, in his former life he had a certain disorder known as claustrophobia. He subconsciously expected it to affect him in this moment, but he felt the opposite, a warm feeling washed over him as he watched the swarm of people go up and down the street.
"Alright, we have the street, let’s go." Light announced, a bunch of different fruits coddled in his grasp.
’How do you even eat that much?" Jacob asked him, an expression of amusement on his face.
"It’s a habit, I guess, try living in that forest for twelve years." Light responded sarcastically.
They moved on from the traders section and delved deeper into town, following the woman’s instructions until they got to Ellan Street.
It was a narrow cobblestone road with small buildings perfectly aligned side to side.
There were so many doors to count, and night was fast approaching.
A young man was walking towards them, he carried a small basket, as though he was going to fetch something.
"Excuse me, do you perhaps know where I can find Leon?" Xenia inquired, stepping in front of the young man. He was skinny, wore a brown top and shorts, his hat was cut all the way down to his scalp.
"Leon?" He asked rhetorically, placing his index finger on his chin to ponder rhetorically.
Xenia nodded, expecting a further response.
"Ohh! Leon, horseboy Leon." The young man said, nodding and smiling, he was apparently amused by the fact that anybody would search for Leon.
Jacob held his laughter as he listened to the stranger. ’Horseboy’ was such an amusing nickname to give to anyone, and it was definitely not a friendly one.
Light, on the other hand, burst into laughter, his teeth clinging on to a bitten apple. He was never able to be subtle about his emotions, one trait Jacob found to be extremely weird, but he understood it.
"He lives just there," said the stranger, pointing backwards, "it’s the fourth door on your left.
With that, the stranger disappeared further up the road.
The party walked up to the door and knocked, once, twice. Before long the knocks turned into loud bangs.
"Horseboy, haha, I don’t think I’ll ever call him Leon with this information I have now." Light said out loud, again, the concept of subtlety completely lost on him.
Eventually the door swung open with a soft creak. "Get in. Quick. All of you." A voice whispered from within a dark room.
In mere seconds they all stood at the center of the small space, a single candle serving as illumination in the dark room.
"You shouldn’t have come here!" Leon said, as soon as they walked in.
"Why?" Jacob asked.
"You’re being targeted."
"When am I ever not targeted?" Jacob asked again, after the man failed to respond to his initial question.
"This is different, she’s scary." Leon said, his voice shaky.
"She? Who’s she?" Jacob asked again, Light and Xenia exchanged glances, confused.
Leon slowly slumped into a small chair on the edge of the room.
"Listen, I’ll tell you, it was a woman. I didn’t get to see her face, but she was scary, very scary. She came here and threatened me unless I told her where you were. I’ve been living here in fear ever since."
’Pussy.’ Light mused, a smile creeping on his face.
"When did she show up?" Jacob asked, taking a single step towards Leon.
"She showed up about one week ago, she pointed something sharp at my neck. I had to tell her, I had to. You have to understand, I have a wife, I have children. You ha—" Leon started, Xenia felt pity for the man. He wasn’t exactly young. He wasn’t old either, but it was clear that this ordeal had caused him to age even more in the last few days.
"It’s okay. I understand you, we’re back now, you’re safe. You have absolutely nothing to worry about." Jacob assured him, watching as the man’s countenance began to shift, he very clearly felt better after hearing Jacob’s words.
"All that’s left to do is to find out who this woman is, and why she is looking for me."
Jacob pondered for a while, his index finger planted on his jaw as he paced around the room.
He had found walking around a small room slowly to be very comforting and a good way to help him think.
"How was the experience in the Forest? I see you’re looking well..." Leon inquired in a calm voice, he looked at Jacob, then at Xenia, then at Light, whom he didn’t recognize, "...all of you."
Light immediately dragged a seat towards him, tapping his shoulder and offering him a banana.
"It was crazy! Oh, firstly, let me introduce myself, I’m Ligbt Wutherhorn, fourth son of the Primarch of the Wutherhorn dynasty, I’ve been in the Forest of Ten Thousand Beasts for about twelve years now. I was fortunate to meet Xenia... and Jacob here, and they helped me to leave..." Light yapped on and on, forcing Leon to listen to his adventures.
Jacob and Xenia stood off to the side.
"Who might be looking for you? with a grudge to bear, enough to want to kill Leon and his family." Xenia asked him, but Jacob remained silent.
He pondered in silence, a serious expression on his face, but it wasn’t about him, his first priority was keeping Leon alive.
