Chapter 83: Playing Along

Meng Yunhan slapped her thigh angrily. "It has come to this; how is she going to survive!"

If it were in the past, Meng Yunhan would not have cared about this threat at all. After all, she still had ten thousand yuan in savings in her hands, but now she was penniless. Her eldest son was having trouble, and the filial piety that he sent was getting less each month. As for her second daughter, it was even more impossible. She was practically sold off by her; thus, no one in her family wanted her second daughter have any connection with their family.

The only one who could bring money to her was Han Ruochen, and she was now out of her control.

If Old Han stopped caring about Han Ziyan, then even if Meng Yunhan found a job, she would never be able to give her daughter the same comfort that Old Han could!

Meng Yunhan knew that Old Han was serious this time. Anyway, Han Ziyan was not his daughter, and it was good enough that he was giving her a place under his roof. He was still furious over the fact that an adopted daughter tried to make a fool of the legitimate daughter. Now that Han Ruochen had said a bunch of lies, he was going to doubt Han Ziyan even more.

She then turned to look at her daughter, who seemed a bit uneasy, and hurriedly pulled her inside an empty room. Meng Yunhan looked around and asked in a low voice, "Ziyan, tell me, did you do it?"

"Mom, I–"

"Alright, there is no need to lie to me. Do I not know you? Your mother." Meng Yunhan was not easily fooled. She knew Han Ziyan like the back of her hand. The second Han Ruochen mentioned that rainy night, she noticed that her daughter’s expression turned uneasy, and she even asked her to drop the matter. There must be something fishy, or else her daughter would have never let Han Ruochen put such a pot of blame on her head.

Han Ziyan’s face turned pale, and her lips started to tremble. She knew that there was no way she would be able to escape, so she nodded and started sobbing. She said to her mother, "Mom, I know I was wrong. I was jealous of my sister; there were many times I asked Brother Jianming to break the engagement, but he wouldn’t do it. He said that the betrothal money that father gave him was quite a lot, and if he broke the engagement, then he would have to return everything that he took. He refused to break the engagement off, but if he didn’t break it, then what would become of me?"

"He had already taken advantage of me, and I cannot marry another man. That would be like ruining two lives; that’s why—that’s why I had to do it. I swear I never wanted to harm my sister. Even if she had married the idiot brother of the Yang family, I would have taken care of her. Anyway, even if I try to surpass Sister Chen, in the end, I will always be the adopted daughter of the Han family. Dad will never give me any dowry that could surpass my sister’s."

"With a dowry good enough for only an adopted daughter, how can I win the heart of the Yang family? You also know how greedy Aunt Yang is, Mom. Do you think she would have allowed Brother Jianming to return the dowry? I just wanted to survive and marry the man I love!"

Han Ziyan was crying as if she were an animal trapped in a rather bad condition.

Seeing her like this, Meng Yunhan couldn’t blame her. She could only blame Han Yichen. If that man had not ruined her reputation, then Han Ziyan would have had a legitimate status. She wouldn’t have to live as an adopted daughter.

It had to be said that the two of them were really mother and daughter. One blamed Han Ruochen for standing in her path, and the other blamed Han Yichen, who gave her a good life. The two of them were, in the end, the victims, while everyone else was the culprit!

"Alright, stop crying. Let’s go and eat." Meng Yunhan was worried that her daughter would be shortchanged when she heard Han Yichen call for dinner and usher her out of the room.

Of course, even if Han Ruochen was in a bad mood, she would never let the mother and daughter take advantage of her father. She walked out of her room with her two brothers and took seats at the dining table. She did not cast a single glance at the mother and daughter, and neither did Han Yichen. He was only focused on filling Han Ruochen’s and his two sons’ bowls.

"Here, eat more. You three must eat your fill, especially you, Beijiang. Look at you; you are so skinny. Others who don’t know anything would think that there is someone in the family who is torturing you."

Meng Yunhan: "..."

"We know dad. You should also eat; you work hard. So don’t shortchange yourself." She then turned to look at her two brothers and said to them, "You two should also eat a lot and grow up. Dad and I are waiting to rely on you."

Han Ruochen plucked as much meat and fish as well as vegetables as she could and distributed them among her brothers and her father.

The whole family listened to Meng Yunhan and gave the best things to Han Ziyan, and in the end, she actually wiped out their family! It would be a waste to let this woman eat such delicious meat.

When Meng Yunhan saw that the entire plate of braised pork was shared among the members of the Han family, with only two pieces left, she felt her heart pinch. She hurriedly picked up the two pieces and placed them, on Han Ziyan and her bowl. "Ziyan, you are growing too. You should also eat some more good stuff."
