Chapter 247: Chapter 247: The Dust Settles

"4-2009 Nina: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two What’s there to feel sorry about? Even if it was a paradise shelter, regular people like us could never afford it. It’s just for the rich to enjoy!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-2009 Nina That’s true... Sigh, there are so many rich people in the world. I heard that in our province alone, there are several thousand families with assets over a hundred million. Why can’t I be one of them!"

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two The official announcement didn’t say if it shut down or not... but I think it would be a good thing if it did!"

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: The announcement said that the hotel’s underground parking garage connected to an illegal underground medical facility. In that facility, they forcibly harvested the organs of people they had kidnapped!"

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: When the police went in, they found lots of human organs that hadn’t been sold yet, and a lot of frozen bodies! The bodies were all hollowed out, just tossed in the freezers. So horrifying!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-1209 SlackingOffNow Oh my god, that’s terrifying! I’m getting goosebumps all over! No wonder so many people were disappearing for no reason. So that’s what was happening!"

"6-702 The Lover: That criminal group is pure evil! Just reading these words, I can imagine what a living hell that place was! Those poor people who were taken... death is too good for those criminals!"

"12-1803 AAA Lawson’s Building Supplies (Closed): Actually, the hotel didn’t shut down. I have a relative who works at the Oceanus Hotel. The government has taken it over, so it should resume normal operations soon. That underground medical facility has also been cleaned out."

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @12-1803 AAA Lawson’s Building Supplies (Closed) Oh my god, your relative works at the Oceanus Hotel? Are you sure they weren’t part of the gang?"

"12-1803 AAA Lawson’s Building Supplies (Closed): @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two Haha, no way. He was detained and investigated for several days and was only released after they confirmed he wasn’t involved in the crimes. If he was part of the gang, do you think he would have made it out alive? Wouldn’t he have been gunned down long ago?"

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: I have to admit, with that cancerous criminal organization gone, the number of missing people has dropped. It seems a lot safer outside now."

"7-901 Adventurous Lawson: @4-1209 SlackingOffNow That may be true, but I’m still too scared to go out. Ever since the sky went dark, all sorts of terrible things have been happening nonstop. Human trafficking, kidnappings, terrorists—they’ve all come out of the woodwork."

"7-901 Adventurous Lawson: I’m terrified that the moment I step outside, a van will just pop out of nowhere and snatch me off the street."

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: Sigh, and our city is supposed to be a first-tier one. At the end of last year, the news was even praising us for our excellent disaster response, calling us a model civilized city. I can’t even imagine what other places have become."

"12-1803 AAA Lawson’s Building Supplies (Closed): @4-1209 SlackingOffNow Didn’t some cult blow up a government building in the neighboring province a while back? The situation in other places has to be way worse than it is here."

"2-1908 Coco: Honestly, no matter how chaotic it gets domestically, things won’t completely spiral out of control. After all, the populace is very cooperative with the government’s arrangements. But what do you all think has happened to other countries over the last two years?"

"2-1908 Coco: I heard a lot of countries fell into a state of anarchy a long time ago. Do you think there are even any people left alive there? Have they all reverted to primeval forests?"

"4-1209 SlackingOffNow: @2-1908 Coco Actually, it might be a good thing if they did. People online are saying that these natural disasters are just Terra disinfecting itself. They say Terra thinks there are too many humans, and that our activities are too destructive—illegal mining and chemical pollution everywhere—so Terra finally snapped."

"3-805 Fruit Hard Candy: @4-1209 SlackingOffNow Oh god, I’m gonna cry. Does that mean I’m one of Terra’s tumors? WAAAH."

"4-2009 Nina: @4-1209 SlackingOffNow Jeez, what on earth are you young people talking about all day? It’s so creepy! I heard on the news it’s going to snow soon. The sky will definitely brighten up then! So you all should stop spreading nonsense here!"

"..."

Melody Summers groggily scrolled through the group chat history, a wave of drowsiness washing over her.

In the living room, Ian Summers turned on the game console. He hadn’t touched one in a long time while in the military, and he was feeling a bit nostalgic.

The whole family gathered around, playing games and chattering away.

Winnie Summers, concerned about the fish in the tank, periodically got up to check on the tank’s support system.

Grace Sutton couldn’t sit still, so she took inventory and reorganized the supplies in the living room several more times.

Surrounded by the warm, cheerful atmosphere of her family, Melody Summers felt her mind and body unwind.

As she relaxed, the urge to sleep grew even stronger.

Her eyelids grew heavy, so she excused herself and went to her room to sleep.

The nighttime temperature had already dropped below freezing, so after a hot shower, Melody Summers got into bed early.

The bed was covered with the blanket Ronan Rhodes had sent over. Its silky-soft mink fur completely shut out the cold air. Melody Summers felt as though she were enveloped in a warm, fluffy cloud and let out a sigh of pure comfort.

In the warm, soft glow of the bedside lamp, she surveyed the lavishly decorated bedroom.

It was the largest and most luxurious bedroom in apartment 1606. The whole place might have really been a gift for Sylvia Lancaster; every decorative detail was exquisite, right down to the lavish handmade carpet under her feet.

When they were picking rooms, Miss Lowell and Winnie Summers had insisted that Melody Summers take this one.

In her family’s eyes, the best should always be reserved for the children.

In her past life, when Melody Summers had lived here, she was forced to sleep in a corner of the hallway. The Lancasters had divided all the rooms among themselves, treating her with the suspicion one would a thief.

Now, she was finally living in the largest, most spacious master bedroom.

Albus climbed out of his cat bed, stretched lazily, and snuggled up against Melody Summers’s pillow.

Melody Summers closed her eyes, stroking Albus absently as she silently reviewed the messages she’d just read in the chat.

Now, the Oceanus Hotel incident was finally settled. The masterminds, Hector Hayes and Raymond Hayes, were both dead.

Counting Hugh Hayes, whom she had killed with her Space Ability, and Clara Hayes, who had fallen to her death, all four members of the Hayes Family were now dead. Not a single one remained.

Even Lily Adler—the woman who had personally swapped her and Sylvia Lancaster at birth, the very source of the whole switched-at-birth ordeal—was also dead.

In the second year of her rebirth, all the people who had wronged her in her past life—everyone except the Lancasters—had perished in this endless night, never to see the dawn again.

It felt like a perfect conclusion to that Chapter of her life.

As for the Lancasters...

Melody Summers couldn’t shake the feeling that Sylvia Lancaster’s behavior today had been bizarre, as if she were a completely different person.

Roman Rhodes had told her that Sylvia Lancaster had injured her head in the fall. ’Could that head injury be why her personality has changed so drastically?’

After all, the Sylvia Lancaster of this life had endured far more setbacks than her past-life counterpart. Her personality was nowhere near as brazen and unrestrained.

But today, Sylvia had acted just as impulsively as she had in the past life.

Melody Summers felt that something was off...

But she was simply too exhausted to think about it anymore.

Remembering that she had to see Ian Summers off the next day, Melody Summers lay back on the soft, clean bed and drifted into a deep sleep.
