Chapter 311: Unexpected Neighbors
Hearing the system notification, Melody Summers, holding Albus, stood up and left the ship-shaped structure.
Just like last time, Melody Summers stood on the marble platform outside the ship-shaped structure, waiting in silence.
After about ten minutes, the ship-shaped structure in front of her began to emit a faint white glow.
A few seconds later, the entire structure started dissolving into pinpoints of starlight and vanished right before Melody Summers’s eyes.
The white marble platform was now completely empty. The system notification sounded again:
[The freighter has set sail. Upon its return, it will randomly bring back mysterious goods from a distant land!]
Listening to the system notification, Melody Summers couldn’t help but smile in anticipation.
Based on the auction prices at The Nimbus Hotel, this red diamond could sell for several billion at the very least. Melody Summers was extremely excited to see what the freighter would bring back next time...
******
The next morning, Melody Summers planned to go to the sales office to buy units 1603 and 1604 on her floor.
’If I buy these two apartments,’ she thought, ’I shouldn’t have to deal with any more weirdo neighbors...’
Having Ivan Warren and Maisie Lynch as neighbors on the 16th floor was annoying enough; it would be best if another pair like them didn’t show up.
Besides, according to Melody Summers’s memory, once the reconstruction zones started being established, apartments in The Metropolis Residences would be in extremely high demand. Although Melody Summers wasn’t short on money, buying two more units now wouldn’t be a loss.
But to her surprise, just as Melody Summers opened her door, she saw several staff members from the property management center standing in the hallway.
Tate and other property staff were moving furniture into 1603, and several cardboard boxes were placed in the hallway.
Melody Summers: "..."
’No way, what a coincidence?’
’New neighbors are moving in this quickly??’
Tate moved the nightstand he was carrying to the doorway of 1603. Just as he was about to catch his breath, he suddenly saw Melody Summers standing nearby.
He greeted Melody Summers enthusiastically, "Miss Summers, good morning! Are you heading out?"
Melody Summers nodded at him, smiled politely, and asked, "Good morning, Tate! Is someone new moving in?"
Tate nodded with a smile. "Someone is moving into 1603 today, and someone else is moving into 1501 downstairs. They asked us to help with their furniture and luggage."
Many residents had moved into The Metropolis Residences recently. Adhering to the principle of keeping business in the family, the property management center organized its employees to help residents with their move for a fee, allowing the staff to earn some extra cash.
Melody Summers said, "Oh," and then asked, "Has 1603 been bought by a new owner?"
Hearing this, Tate shook his head and replied, "They didn’t buy it. The resident in 1603 is a tenant, just a short-term, one-month lease."
To cope with the impending blizzard and to promptly accommodate residents from the lower floors, the government had issued a directive. It tasked the property management companies of each residential complex with renting out the unoccupied, unsold units on the higher floors.
’Since it’s just a one-month short-term lease, it shouldn’t stop me from buying it first,’ Melody Summers thought.
So, Melody Summers said to Tate, "Has 1604 been sold then? I’d like to buy both 1603 and 1604."
Tate was a bit surprised to hear this. It seemed he hadn’t expected Melody Summers to be so wealthy in this day and age, buying two apartments in one go!
He scratched his head and said, "1604... I don’t remember if it’s been sold or not. I’ll have to check! Miss Summers, could you wait for me for a little bit? Once I’m done moving the furniture for 1603, I’ll go with you to the sales office!"
’Two apartments means a huge commission,’ Tate thought. ’If I can get this commission, my family’s electricity bill for the next two months will be covered!’
Tate hoped Melody Summers would wait for him and not give this sale to someone else.
Seeing the expectant look in Tate’s eyes, Melody Summers nodded and replied with a smile, "Alright, no problem!"
Just then, a man’s voice came from inside 1603. "Hey! What are you doing, standing around chatting? We paid for your service, so stop trying to slack off!"
As the voice rang out, a tall, hulking man walked out of the apartment. He was around thirty or forty years old, with a square face and a prominent "卍" tattoo on his forehead.
He had a very burly frame, and bundled up in a thick down jacket, he looked as massive as a bear.
This must be the new resident of 1603.
For some reason, the moment he looked at Melody Summers, she suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of unease...
Seeing this, Tate quickly replied, "Don’t worry, sir, we’ll be done moving your things right away!"
With that, Tate picked up the nightstand from the floor and headed into the room.
After Tate left, only the resident of 1603 and Melody Summers were left at the doorway.
The resident of 1603 looked Melody Summers up and down, then suddenly broke into a strange smile.
His gaze was odd and made Melody Summers very uncomfortable. Not wanting to talk to him, she immediately turned and walked toward the stairwell.
Melody Summers remembered Tate had just said that 1501 had new neighbors moving in as well.
Since they were on the floor directly below, Melody Summers decided to go down and have a look.
...
When Melody Summers arrived on the 15th floor and stepped out of the stairwell, she saw a familiar scene.
Mrs. Vance was holding her grandson, who was in turn holding a dog. The two of them and the dog were standing silently at the door of 1505, watching people move luggage in and out of 1501.
Melody Summers: ...
’This Mrs. Vance really loves to watch a spectacle as always!’ Melody Summers thought.
Just then, Mrs. Vance’s grandson turned and saw Melody Summers. His eyes curved into a smile, and he said sweetly to her, "Hero Sis! Good morning!"
Hearing this, Melody Summers walked forward a couple of steps with a sense of resignation. She took a lollipop from her pocket, stuffed it into his hand, and said, "Didn’t I tell you before? You’re not supposed to call me Hero Sis, you should call me Missie Summers! Don’t get it wrong again next time!"
At this point, Mrs. Vance also turned and saw Melody Summers. She quickly greeted her with a smile, "Miss Summers! Good morning!"
Looking at Mrs. Vance’s sincere smile, Melody Summers felt a bit of a headache coming on. She corrected her helplessly, "Mrs. Vance, you can just call me Summers!" 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Hearing this, Mrs. Vance patted her forehead in embarrassment and replied with a laugh, "Oh, silly me, I keep forgetting!"
Then she leaned in close to Melody Summers’s ear and whispered, "Summers, you have no idea. Yesterday, the family of three across the hall in 1506 got into a huge fight, smashing things and throwing bowls!"
Recalling the commotion she’d heard yesterday, Mrs. Vance shook her head and clucked her tongue. "TSK TSK," she said with a sigh, "They’ve only been here for a few days, and they fight almost every day... They’re family, for crying out loud. I don’t know what kind of deep-seated hatred they have for each other!"
Melody Summers was taken aback. Ethan Sutton’s family fought every day? And quite fiercely, at that?
’That’s strange,’ Melody Summers remembered. ’In her past life, that family was remarkably harmonious and united... at least when it came to ganging up on her...’
In her past life, Ethan Sutton had been extremely resistant to his engagement with Melody Summers. He would often humiliate her publicly at parties, and Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, without ever bothering to learn who was right or wrong, would always indulge and defend Ethan, constantly forcing Melody Summers to be the one to back down.
Thinking about how miserable they were in this life, Melody Summers could only feel it was karmic retribution!
Then Melody Summers pointed to the people moving in and out of 1501 and asked, "Mrs. Vance, is a new owner moving into 1501 on your floor?"
Mrs. Vance replied, "I just went and asked. They’re residents from our own complex. They used to live on the first floor, but after seeing the government’s blizzard warning, they decided to rent 1501 temporarily and move up here!"
Melody Summers understood. "Oh," she said.
’So they’re just residents from the same complex. They probably aren’t any danger.’
Just as Melody Summers was about to say goodbye to Mrs. Vance and leave, she suddenly saw two unexpected people walk out of 1501.
It was Joyce Lawson and Yvonne York!
