Chapter 314: Chapter 314: The Second Uncle’s In-Laws

Caleb Summers?

Wasn’t Caleb Summers that ungrateful wretch of an uncle?!

Melody Summers thought she must have misheard. She snatched the rental agreement for 4-1604 from Tate’s hand and frowned, examining it closely.

Right there, in the signature field for Party B, was the name "Caleb Summers."

At that, Melody Summers fell completely silent.

Seeing her reaction, Tate scratched his head and asked quietly, "Miss Summers, do you two know each other?"

’This Caleb Summers has the same last name as Melody Summers,’ Tate thought. ’Could they be related?’

Melody Summers didn’t answer Tate. Instead, she frowned and murmured, "How is that possible..."

Melody Summers had taken Nina Summers home before, so she knew that Caleb Summers’s family lived in a high-rise in one of the city’s best neighborhoods.

’Why would Caleb Summers suddenly rent an apartment in The Metropolis Residences? There’s absolutely no reason for them to move here.’

’Could it just be someone with the same name?’

At this thought, Melody Summers took out her phone, entered the contact number for Party B from the rental agreement into her contacts, and searched. Sure enough, the name Caleb Summers popped up.

’So much for that,’ Melody thought. ’It’s not a coincidence. It’s my uncle, Caleb Summers, himself.’

Just then, Tate chimed in with an explanation. "The tenants for 1604 rented the place two weeks ago. When they signed the contract, they said they’d be moving in sometime in the next couple of days... The weather forecast says it’s going to start snowing tomorrow, so I guess they decided to move in today."

Melody Summers: "..."

’Just my luck,’ Melody thought, a headache already forming. ’Whatever you dread the most is bound to happen.’ 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Caleb Summers was selfish, cunning, and calculating. If his family was really moving in at a time like this, it was definitely not a good thing.

Melody Summers sighed silently. At this point, all she could do was roll with the punches.

******

After saying goodbye to Tate, Melody Summers went straight home. She and Winnie Summers had to attend that party Sophie Thorne mentioned tonight, so Melody planned to go home and get ready.

But as soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw that the door to 1604 was wide open. People were moving around inside, looking like they were moving furniture.

Ivan Warren had been peering out from the doorway of 1602, looking into 1604. When he saw Melody Summers approaching, his expression changed instantly.

Then, as if he’d seen a terrifying monster, he yanked his head back in fear and slammed the door shut!

Melody Summers paid Ivan Warren no mind. She watched the shifting figures inside 1604 and thought, ’So Caleb Summers’s family has moved in?’

Living on the same floor meant they were bound to run into each other eventually; there was no avoiding it. Melody was debating whether she should go over and see Nina Summers when a young, unfamiliar man and woman walked out of 1604.

The man, who looked to be in his early twenties, was wearing a simple, short, slate-blue down jacket. He was very young and not particularly tall, but he was quite handsome.

The woman appeared to be around thirty. She wore a light green padded coat, and her long hair was permed into waves. She had striking features, bright red lipstick, and the combination of her vivid makeup and youthful attire reminded Melody Summers of a Hong Kong star from the last century.

Staring at the unfamiliar pair, Melody Summers was completely baffled. ’Who are these two? Why are they the ones moving in? ...Don’t tell me Caleb Summers is subletting the place?’

In any case, seeing that it wasn’t Caleb Summers’s family moving in, Melody Summers actually felt a sense of relief...

Just as Melody Summers was walking past the unfamiliar man and woman on her way home, another woman in a fur coat emerged from 1604.

The moment they passed each other, the woman in the fur coat suddenly called out to Melody Summers, "Wait! You... you’re Nina’s cousin, right?"

Melody Summers stopped in her tracks. She turned to look at the woman before her and asked with a hint of confusion, "...And you are?"

The woman smiled, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "I’m... I’m that child Nina’s stepmother. I don’t know if you remember me."

’Nina Summers’s stepmother?’

Seeing the perplexed look on Melody Summers’s face, Zoe Kane smiled and said, "A few months ago, when you brought Nina home, we met briefly... You don’t remember me?"

Hearing Zoe Kane say that, Melody Summers did remember.

She recalled that when they took Nina Summers home from the police station, they had indeed met Caleb Summers’s new wife.

’I can’t believe I’m running into her here.’

Melody Summers nodded impassively. "I remember. So it’s you. What a coincidence."

Seeing that Melody Summers recognized her, Zoe Kane’s smile grew even warmer. She asked, "Do you live here?"

Although Melody Summers didn’t want to admit it, she knew she couldn’t hide it, so she gave a slight nod.

Zoe Kane sighed at her response and said apologetically, "I can’t believe I didn’t even know you lived here. It’s all my fault! Ever since your uncle and I got married, I’ve been so busy having and raising kids that I haven’t had any time to visit with relatives..."

Melody Summers just smiled. ’Caleb Summers is a piece of work who won’t even acknowledge his own mother,’ she thought. ’The second he made it big, he decided the people from his hometown were an embarrassment and cut off all contact. And after the falling out between our families over that matchmaking business during the heatwave, we visited even less.’

But Zoe Kane’s words were clearly a gesture of goodwill, so Melody couldn’t say anything else. "Not at all. Everyone’s busy, and with the natural disaster going on, no one’s in the mood for visiting. How could we blame you?"

Zoe Kane smiled at that. Then she pointed to 1604 behind her and said to Melody, "My family just moved into 1604 today. Since we’re all relatives, we can look out for each other from now on."

It all clicked for Melody Summers. ’I see,’ she thought. ’No wonder Caleb Summers’s name was on the rental agreement for 1604...’

It turned out Caleb Summers had rented the apartment for his in-laws.

Melody Summers couldn’t help but sneer inwardly. ’This uncle of mine is really something else. He hasn’t given a damn about his own mother for years, not even bothering to check if she was dead or alive during the disaster. But for his new in-laws, he’s the picture of a dutiful son!’

’She would have been better off giving birth to a piece of BBQ pork!’

Melody Summers’s disgust for Caleb Summers deepened, and with it, she lost all interest in making small talk with Zoe Kane. She just nodded and gave a perfunctory, "Mm."

Zoe Kane was a very perceptive woman; she could see that Melody Summers’s expression had become distant.

She had originally planned to go home with Melody Summers for a bit, see what kind of supplies they had, and maybe get some for her own family.

But seeing Melody Summers’s cold expression, Zoe Kane had to abandon the idea.

She gave Melody Summers a polite smile and said, "Well, I’ll be going then. I’ll come visit another day."

Melody Summers nodded and turned to leave without another word.

Watching Melody Summers walk away, the woman with the red lipstick and green coat snorted. "Zoe," she said, annoyed, "is that little brat your sister-in-law’s daughter? What’s with her attitude toward you?"

Zoe Kane quickly grabbed her sister’s hand, frowning as she whispered, "Sis, keep your voice down!"

Zella Kane rolled her eyes in disdain. "Why should I? You’re her elder, her aunt! Are you actually afraid she’ll hear me?"
