Chapter 29: She’s Got What You Need

Kalli sighed as she realized that she had become the group’s loot vendor for life.

The way that everyone was looking at her, like she was something precious, told her that they had no intentions of forgetting that System Points could be traded to her for gear instead of saving them for skills.

Even if most of them were reluctant to do that while there were still supplies in the Academy.

They needed more skills and more power to deal with what was out there. They couldn’t be trading off their only source of increasing power for food. At least trading it for a core piece of gear for your build made some sense.

A better weapon allowed you to fight more effectively, just like a new skill would.

A stealth class like Niall with a silenced gun would be great at dealing with the rat demons. So, trading for the gear he needed made perfect sense.

Kalli smiled as she saw all three quest teams finish in quick succession, then frowned as she realized that she was getting a point deducted for every team that completed the mission.

She was hoping that bulk completions were the path to infinite points, but it looked like issuing her own didn’t come without a price.

Still, she was way ahead on points, and even if she bought supplies for the camp, she had more than enough to keep them operating. That could be her strength in the future. If the others kept doing quests, she would have the points to keep the basics of an outpost running.

A plan began to form in her head, about making the Academy a long-term settlement for herself and whoever else wanted to stay here.

If the system was going to bring everyone to her when they finished quests, so they could claim their rewards, she needed to remain easily visible. So, she could take advantage of that and open a shop of some sort. A place to look up available quests and buy things from the points shop if they were willing to trade.

The three teams that went out were soon on their way back, and visible to the guards on tower duty, but there were others as well.

"We can see spells and movement in the distance. I believe there are more of your people who saw the quest and have gone out to claim their rewards." The tower guard on Kalli’s left shouted down to them.

They were really going to have to get more radios.

With that announcement, the students who were still on the Academy grounds prepared for more visitors. Someone ran down to the kitchen to warn Gerry that they had more people coming, so the mage could begin slicing more pork to roast for them.

Greeting the students with a hot meal seemed like the right thing to do, as everyone knew each other, and in the chaos they might not have managed to get a decent one today.

The first team to come back was led by Sanchez, who was dragging a dead boar by the tusks. It had clearly been gutted already, and the rest of the team looked quite proud of themselves, as they had not only managed to get their ten rat demon kills, they had brought back one of the giant boars that were the base of their diet these days.

"Does anyone have a larger storage as part of their class?"

The students all shrugged as the Sergeant asked the question, but Kalli raised her head. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Yeah, I’ve got a larger storage limit. Did you want me to hold on to the boar until the base needs it?"

"If you would. The freezer is already nearly full, and I’m worried that if we’re attacked, we might lose power. I don’t know if your Points Store can get us new solar panels and wiring, but I would rather not risk it."

"Good point. I will hold the boar. Just let me know when you want it back. Now, where was my notepad? I’m going to need to keep a ledger."

Kalli found her school supplies in her storage, and took out a notepad and a pen.

A page for stored items was started, with Sergeant Sanchez and today’s date, plus one boar. That was enough for her to find it later, in case there were any questions.

The boar vanished, and Kalli nodded in satisfaction. "If anyone wants to trade, let me know. I’ll be waiting here on the front lawn under this awning, while the other teams come to get their rewards.

If the System is going to send them directly to me to claim their rewards, instead of giving them where they finished the mission, there’s no point to going inside."

The next team coming in the gates just laughed and patted her shoulder as they walked by, claiming their rewards and checking in.

"How many are left out?" Derek asked.

"Reggie’s team, plus whoever else is out there. The wall guards report multiple other teams moving in the distance, and the System apparently thinks they should come here. The School Council is in the cafeteria right now."

The warrior smiled. "Nice. Did they get good classes?"

"Niall is a Rogue, the girls are all Warriors."

"Ha, he’s in trouble now. His harem all got strength buffs."

The students laughed, knowing how the Student Council President felt about that rumour.

Reggie’s team was right behind them, and they were accompanied by a ragtag group of what appeared to be awakened local residents.

"Wow, this place is fancy. Fuck Ricky, we should have come here instead of setting up in our building."

The big man called Ricky just laughed, and gestured to the soldiers.

"And try to take a safe zone from a special forces team? I’m a Berserker, not a moron. Plus, if that little girl is the check in point for quests, she’s not a normal person.

Now, how does this work?"

Kalli smiled. "We shake hands, you get your reward box, and then you can head home, or you can trade with me for supplies you need. The System lets me do that in exchange for the points you get from quests.

You can also use them to upgrade your skills, so choose wisely."
