Chapter 56: Chapter 56 - Cover

Well, that didn’t work. The moment I tried to sneak towards the exit, Rosary was quick to grab my arm and stop me. It took a while before all the hype over her cover being blown died down, and that’s when the attention inevitably shifted to me, much to my dismay and exasperation.

I considered just killing them all and then getting the hell out of this town immediately, but I’m way outnumbered, not to mention outclassed by at least a few of them.

So I had to come clean...for starters, I admitted to my disguise, the hairdye, color contacts and makeup to cover my scars. That wasn’t too bad, but then they asked about why the Knights are after me.

Usually, it’s policy not to ask another Adventurer about personal details, but with the Knights having come here, I’ve inadvertently gotten the Guild involved. Which means that, in their eyes, I owe them an explanation.

What a pain, damn it, I didn’t think the Knights would come after me so soon. Hm, they weren’t an especially big group, just nine of them in total...maybe the Knights have split up into several groups and are searching other towns as well?

I’m guessing Aries came here because this place is the closest settlement in the direction I fled to after escaping the capital. I shouldn’t give away too many details about what happened to me, I’ll just reveal the bare minimum to satisfy them.

So I told them that I’d been forced into slavery, managed to kill my captors and escape, before breaking out of the capital and coming here afterwards.

And as for how I explained why the Knights thought I was a Heretic, I did so by claiming that I stole a healing Magic Item and used it to heal my injuries without revealing the item itself. They seemed to buy it, which was a relief.

Well, since my Status Bar displays that I have the Dark Attribute, they didn’t seem particularly suspicious of me being a Heretic anyway. That’s probably why my explanation was accepted without any real skepticism.

I didn’t want to reveal anything else, so I acted like reliving those memories was making me anguished. It worked, and they dropped it, satisfied with the explanation I’d given them.

A lot of them seemed impressed and began acting more friendly towards me...makes sense, they’re all Commoners too, they share the same resentment towards the Nobility as I do, though I doubt as intensely.

It took quite a while before things finally settled down in the Guild, after which I was paid for my successful quest, plus the bonus for reporting the Basilisk.

I have to say, this worked out better than I expected...maybe it won’t be so bad to stay in this town for a bit longer, once the Knights leave. Hm, it’ll depend on what happens before they leave...the Knight I recognized, I fully intend to hunt him down.

I still need the names of the other Knights who were there that day, along with anyone else who was involved...I didn’t have enough time to interrogate Duralles before I killed him, so now that I have another opportunity to get the information I’m looking for, I won’t let it slip by me.

"Okay, that takes care of the reward for the quest, congratulations on successfully completing your first quest as an Adventurer," Smiled Rosary, looking kinda worn out as she handed me the bag of coins.

"Thanks, I appreciate it...Rose Thorn," I smirked in response.

"Ugh, maybe it’s time to stop this receptionist gig," She groaned with an exasperated look on her face.

"That’d be a shame, but I’m also curious to see what sort of get-up you have on when you’re an Adventurer. Well, see ya," I replied with a grin, before heading for the exit.

If I were a few years older, I would totally try flirting with her...but at my current age, she probably won’t take me seriously if I try. Oh, well, I’ll give it a try once I’m older.

"Hey, doesn’t Miss Rosary have bigger boobs now than when she’s Rose Thorn? I always figured Rose Thorn was a woman, but there wasn’t much going on in the chest area," I heard one of the Adventurers say.

"Ohh, think she’s using padding right now?"

"Nah, those look real, so maybe she just using binding when she’s adventuring."

"Yeah, that makes sense, those perky melons would probably get in the way when moving around a lot."

They’re keeping their voices down, but not by a lot. I glanced back at Rosary...heh, yeah, based on her expression, she can definitely hear them. She does have a pair of really nice, perky boobs though, they’re certainly right about that.

I then headed out of the Guild and made my way back to the inn, after picking up some food on the way. I decided to get some spaghetti and milkshakes, along with churros and taquitos for dessert and appetizers.

I’m pretty curious about how different types of food were named in this world...I mean, it has a lot of the same variety of cuisine in my old world, but the names are all the same.

Like, take Italian food...they were named in Italian in my old world, but while this world has English as its sole, universal language, all the different types of food have the same names.

Maybe it was, like, mind control by that God? Or maybe there have been others like me who were reincarnated here with their memories intact? That God mentioned that this world isn’t generally used for such reincarnations, but that doesn’t mean that I’m the first or only one who’s had that exception made.

Well, whatever, it’s not really a big deal, knowing the origin of how food was named in this world doesn’t really make any difference to me. Alright, the inn is just around the next corner.

I’ll take it easy for the rest of the day...seeing those Knights really stressed me out. And besides, I’m gonna need to recover my energy...because tonight, I’m gonna hunt down the one I recognized from the attack on my village.

As I turned the corner, I froze for a moment before blinking in surprise...huh, speak of the devils, there they are, the Knights. There’s a big, fancy hotel across from the more modest inn I’ve been staying at, and they’re walking out of it.

No way...are they gonna be staying in that hotel? That’s...that’s perfect! The room I’m staying at, the window gives me a clear view of the hotel on the opposite side of the street. And the window is tinted on the outside, so they won’t see me watching them.

I kept my head down as I headed for the inn, heading inside while keeping my gaze away from them. If I look at them and see that Knight again, I won’t be able to suppress my murderous rage.

"Ah, welcome back, young man. You should stay inside today, try to avoid those Knights," The innkeeper greeted me.

"Yeah, that’s exactly what I intend to do, thanks for the advice, ma’am," I replied politely, as I headed up the stairs.

Of course, that was a lie. I have no intention of staying away from them. As I reached the room I was staying in, I unlocked the door and headed inside, before shutting and locking it.

I let out a sigh as I opened my Pocket Dimension and let Prysm out, closing it as she walked out. Too bad I don’t have any stealth Skills like invisibility or some kind of detection ability.

My Monster/Magical Beast Thought Communication only works as a detection ability on, well, Monsters and Magical Beasts. Sure, the Knights are monsters, but they’re not literally Monsters.

"Hey, what’s for lunch?" Inquired Prysm with a gulp, as she opened the paper bag and gave it a sniff.

"Relax, you little gremlin, sharing with you is a pain so I got you your own portion separately. Don’t spill anything," I replied dryly, as I handed her one of the spaghetti containers and a milkshake.

"Ohh, thanks!" She grinned eagerly, wiping the corner of her mouth as she began salivating.

I took my share and sat by the window as I began eating...I’ll probably have to wait till it’s dark out and the streets are less crowded. Should be earlier than usual...after all, with the Knights infesting the town, no one’s gonna be too eager to stay out late tonight...

...

"You’ve been looking out the window for hours now. Aren’t you gonna sleep?" Yawned Prysm, as she snuggled up under the covers sleepily.

"Don’t worry about it, just go to sleep. And scoot over a bit, you’re taking up too much space. And if I see you hogging the blanket, I’ll pull it off you and take it all for myself," I remarked as I glanced at her.

"Yeah, okay..."

Looks like she’s completely worn out. I’d initially planned on making her sleep in my Pocket Dimension, but she made a big fuss last night, so I relented and let her sleep on the bed. I’m the type who doesn’t really toss and turn or anything while I’m asleep, so I don’t need a lot of space.

Plus, she’s pretty small, so she barely even takes up a quarter of the space. Now, then...it’s close to midnight, I think it’s time I make my move. Let’s sneak into that hotel and-...hm?

Someone just walked out of the hotel...three of them. Wait, those are some of the Knights...they aren’t wearing their armor, so I didn’t recognize them right away, but the one I’m after is among them.

Well, now...they just made my job a whole lot easier. Still though...what are they upto? They’re wearing regular clothes, and aren’t carrying any weapons either. Whatever, doesn’t matter...I won’t get a better opportunity than this...
