Frantic kisses landed on Annabelle Linton’s neck. Annabelle was tired of struggling.

’If he wasn’t going to let me go, struggling would only pique his interest further, wouldn’t it?’

She gave up resisting and went still, closing her eyes in utter resignation.

Fueled by a mixture of rage and desire, Leona Grant kissed her even more forcefully.

But when his gaze fell upon Annabelle Linton’s expression, as if she were facing death itself, he froze completely.

He lay stiffly on top of her, staring down at her with a dark, intense gaze.

Annabelle lay with her head turned to the side, completely motionless and expressionless.

An overwhelming sense of defeat washed over him again, leaving him no room to escape.

Yet at the same time, seeing her looking as if she had given up on everything made his heart bleed with anguish.

’If he had a choice, he’d be the last person on earth to ever want to force her into anything.’

’Why? Why, Annabelle, do you have to fight me on everything?’

’What’s so wrong with just staying by my side?’

He didn’t understand.

He truly couldn’t understand.

Leona Grant grew furious. "Annabelle Linton, who do you think you’re putting this act on for?"

"Do I owe you something? What the fuck do I owe you that you have to keep pulling this crap? You divorced me for another man, trashed my name in front of him until I sounded worthless. Did I say anything about it? So who are you putting on this miserable act for now?"

"A low-class, useless, ungrateful wretch like you belongs in a zoo!"

"You won’t let me touch you? Hah! Plenty of women are out there crying and begging on their knees for me to touch them. You think I can’t live without you? Who the hell do you think you are?"

After Leona Grant said this, he had even more vicious words ready to unleash, but when he looked at her small, indifferent face—a face completely devoid of the will to live—he held them all back.

’He knew she was in pain, but was he feeling any better?’

’He was going crazy. Fucking crazy!’

’He couldn’t even bring himself to keep yelling at her!’

But as soon as he’d said it, he was filled with self-loathing.

’If he really didn’t need her, he would’ve put a bullet in her long ago.’

Leona Grant looked at Annabelle Linton again.

He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and roughly pulled her into a sitting position on the bed.

But though the initial pull was rough, his movements couldn’t help but turn gentle, as if he were afraid of hurting her.

’He still couldn’t be as cold and heartless as Annabelle Linton. On that front, he had to admit, he was no match for her.’

He straightened her clothes one piece at a time. Although his face was grim, his actions were incredibly careful, as if handling something precious.

Seeing that she was still devoid of any emotion, he pulled her into his arms and held her tightly.

’He must have scared her.’ He was starting to regret his actions.

He held her tightly. He couldn’t bring himself to apologize, nor did he want to. So he simply held her, silently comforting her in his own way.

Breathing in her refreshing floral scent, his agitated heart slowly began to calm. When she still didn’t react, he asked in a soft voice, "Did I scare you just now?"

A corner of Annabelle Linton’s mouth twitched as she looked at him.

’What was this supposed to be?’

’Comforting words? Gentle caresses?’

’I don’t need it, okay?’

’He never showed any mercy when he was hurting me. After making such a scene, he puts on this act... What’s the point?’

When Annabelle didn’t speak, Leona Grant tilted her face up to meet his gaze and asked again, "Answer me. Hmm?"
