Chapter 294: Chapter-294

"That’s right!" Driver Li said, apparently not caring about incriminating himself in his rage. "Said I could do whatever I wanted as long as it looked like an accident or self-defense. Said it was time someone put you back in your place, servant girl."

"I see," Heena said. "So this is a paid assassination, not personal revenge."

"It’s both!" Driver Li snarled, advancing with the knife. "I hate you for what you did to me, and I’m getting paid well to finally have my revenge. Perfect combination."

He lunged forward suddenly, the knife slashing toward Heena’s midsection.

And Heena moved.

She stepped inside his attack arc, deflecting his knife hand with her left arm while her right hand struck his wrist precisely at the nerve cluster.

Driver Li’s hand spasmed, and the knife clattered to the ground.

Before he could recover, Heena’s knee came up into his solar plexus, driving the air from his lungs.

As he bent forward gasping, Heena grabbed his head and brought it down hard onto her rising knee.

The impact was brutal and precise.

Driver Li stumbled backward, blood streaming from his broken nose, completely stunned by the sudden violence and the realization that his "helpless victim" was actually a trained fighter.

"You—you bitch—" he wheezed, trying to recover.

Heena didn’t give him the chance.

She moved forward in a flowing combination of strikes—palm heel to the chin snapping his head back, sweep to the legs taking him off balance, elbow to the temple as he fell.

Driver Li crashed to the ground, dazed and bleeding.

Heena stood over him, not even breathing hard, her expression cold and controlled.

"You were hired to attack me," she said clearly for the witnesses. "Hired by Madam Maya to cause me harm and make it appear accidental. You’ve confessed this. You’ve attempted to carry it out. And you’ve failed."

She looked up toward the storage building and nodded.

That was the signal.

Samuel’s guards emerged from the shadows, surrounding Driver Li who was still groaning on the ground.

Samuel himself stepped out from his hiding place, his expression a mixture of relief and fierce pride.

"Secure him," Samuel ordered the guards. "And someone fetch the constable. We have a confession of conspiracy to assault, and we have credible witnesses who observed everything."

Master Feng and Master Zhao climbed down from the storage building, both looking shocked by the violence but also impressed by Heena’s capabilities.

"We witnessed the entire confrontation," Master Feng said formally. "Driver Li confessed to being hired by Madam Maya. He attacked the young mistress with a knife. She defended herself with appropriate force."

Master Zhao held up his written account. "I have documented the entire exchange. Every word spoken, every action taken. This will serve as legal evidence."

Driver Li, finally recovering enough to understand the situation, looked around wildly at the assembled witnesses and guards.

"Wait—this was a trap! You set me up!"

"No," Heena said calmly. "You chose to attack me. You chose to accept payment from Maya. You chose to come here with a weapon and violent intent. We simply made sure there were witnesses to your choices."

Samuel moved to Heena’s side. "Are you hurt?"

"Not at all," Heena said. "He never came close to actually harming me."

Samuel wanted to embrace her, to confirm physically that she was truly unharmed, but he restrained himself in front of the witnesses.

Instead, he just said quietly, "You were magnificent."

Heena smiled slightly. "I told you I could handle it."

Within minutes, the household constable arrived—a stern older man who took his duties seriously.

After hearing the witnesses’ accounts and reading Master Zhao’s written documentation, he formally arrested Driver Li for assault and conspiracy.

"And the woman who hired him?" the constable asked. "This Madam Maya?"

"We’ll need to question Driver Li further to confirm all the details," Samuel said. "But yes, we have strong evidence that my stepmother was behind this attack."

The constable nodded grimly. "I’ll need to speak with her as well. This is a serious matter—conspiracy to assault, possibly attempted murder depending on the intent."

As Driver Li was being led away in chains, still protesting weakly, Samuel turned to the witnesses.

"Master Feng, Master Zhao—I cannot thank you enough for your assistance tonight. Your presence made this possible."

"We’re glad to help establish justice," Master Feng said. "Though I must say, young master, your wife’s fighting skills are... quite remarkable. Where did she learn such techniques?"

"Her previous life was complicated," Samuel said simply. "But I’m grateful she had that training when it mattered."

After the witnesses departed and the guards dispersed, Samuel and Heena finally stood alone in the courtyard. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

The full moon had risen, bathing everything in silver light.

"That was incredibly risky," Samuel said quietly.

"But necessary," Heena replied. "And effective. We now have documented evidence of Maya’s conspiracy. Driver Li will likely confess fully to avoid worse charges. And we have the testimony of two respected merchants."

"My father will have to act now," Samuel said. "Even if he wanted to protect Maya, he can’t ignore this. It’s too public, too well-documented."

Heena nodded. "Which means the household power structure is about to shift dramatically."

Samuel looked at her in the moonlight—this strange, capable, mysterious woman who’d entered his life as a servant and become his partner, his ally, and increasingly, something more.

"You could have been killed tonight," he said. "If Driver Li had been faster, or luckier, or if you’d miscalculated—"

"But I didn’t," Heena interrupted gently. "I assessed the threat accurately, planned appropriately, and executed effectively. That’s what I do."

"Still," Samuel said, and this time he did reach out, taking both her hands in his. "I need you to understand something. You’re not just a strategic asset to me anymore. You’re not just a useful partner."

He met her eyes directly.

"I care about you. As a person. The thought of you being hurt tonight, even though I trusted your abilities, it was... difficult. Frightening, actually."

Heena felt her heart rate increase—not from combat adrenaline this time, but from something else entirely.

"Samuel—"

"I know this started as a business arrangement," he continued. "I know we married for practical reasons, not romantic ones. But somewhere along the way, that changed for me. And I needed you to know that."

Heena didn’t know what to say.

In all her lives, across all her missions, she’d maintained emotional distance. She’d had political marriages, strategic alliances, even physical relationships.

But genuine emotional connection? The kind that made someone’s safety matter more than strategic considerations?

That was new. Unexpected. Dangerous.

And absolutely terrifying.

"I care about you too," she heard herself say. "More than I planned to. More than I probably should."

Samuel smiled—a real, warm smile that transformed his usually serious face.

"So what do we do about that?"

"I don’t know," Heena admitted. "I’ve never... this isn’t something I’ve dealt with before."

"Neither have I," Samuel said. "But maybe we figure it out together? The way we’ve figured out everything else?"

Heena found herself smiling despite her emotional confusion.

"Together," she agreed. "That sounds... good, actually."

They stood there in the moonlight, hands clasped, both understanding that something fundamental had shifted between them.

The business arrangement had become something real.

The strategic partnership had become something deeper.

And neither of them was quite sure what that meant for the future.

But they would face it together.

Whatever came next.
