Return of Black Lotus system:Taming Cheating Male Leads
Chapter 296 --
She looked at the System seriously.
"I think there’s a VERY big piece missing from this story. Something significant happened that we don’t know about. And I want to meet Maya’s parents to find out what it is."
The System still looked uncertain, so Heena continued: "Look, I can just say I met them by accident while shopping in their town. I’m new to the region, newly married, a former servant—I don’t know who Maya’s parents are or what they look like. Most people wouldn’t suspect anything because I have legitimate reasons not to recognize them."
She shrugged. "And even if someone DOES suspect I’m investigating, so what? What can they actually do about it? I’m the young master’s legal wife now. I have status and protection. A casual conversation with some townspeople isn’t illegal."
Then she looked at the System with a more serious expression.
"And there’s another reason I need to do this. I need to investigate Seera’s background too—the original servant girl whose body I’m inhabiting. What happened to her real family? Where did she come from? Why was she working here?"
She paused thoughtfully.
"Understanding both Maya’s true past AND Seera’s origins might give us crucial information we’re missing."
The System sighed, clearly recognizing that Heena had made up her mind. "Fine, Host. But we still need to wait a day or two. My information shows that Maya’s mother isn’t at home right now—she’s visiting relatives in another town and won’t be back for two or three days."
Heena nodded. "That’s fine. It gives us time to prepare properly and makes the ’accidental meeting’ more plausible. I’ll plan a shopping trip to their town when I know she’ll be back."
She settled onto her sleeping mat, already beginning to strategize the approach.
"Two or three days. I can work with that timeline."

’’[Two Days Later - Morning]’’
Something really strange happened over those next two days.
Heena observed Maya very carefully, and the woman’s behavior had changed dramatically.
She was completely silent. Not the tense, ready-to-attack silence of someone plotting revenge. Not the cold, calculating silence of someone planning their next scheme.
It was a different kind of silence—almost... distracted. Preoccupied with something else entirely.
It had started the day after Driver Li’s arrest.
Maya had gone out in the morning—unusual for her, as she typically stayed in her quarters until late morning. She’d returned a few hours later looking slightly disheveled, her expensive robes bearing dirt stains as if she’d fallen or stumbled somewhere.
And after that incident, Heena noticed something even stranger:
Maya was SMILING.
Not the fake, saccharine smile she used in public.
Not the cruel, triumphant smile she wore when she thought she’d won something.
A genuine, almost shy smile. The kind of smile a woman wore when thinking about something—or someone—pleasant.
’What the heck is even going on?’ Heena thought, watching Maya walk past in the courtyard with that strange, distant smile on her face.
The System appeared beside Heena, also observing Maya’s odd behavior. He looked at Maya walking by, then turned to Heena and said knowingly, "Host, if I’m not mistaken, it’s time for the male lead to enter the story."
Suddenly Heena froze. "Excuse me?!"
She turned to look at the System with wide eyes.
The System nodded sagely and said, "Yeah, according to the original plot timeline, this is approximately when the male lead was supposed to encounter the female lead for the first time. The meet-cute that starts their romance arc."
He gestured toward the still-smiling Maya with his paw.
"I think we’re witnessing the aftermath of that first meeting right now. That’s why she’s acting so strange—she’s met HIM."
Heena felt her eye twitch. "You’re telling me that right NOW, in the middle of everything else we’re dealing with, the actual MALE LEAD of this world’s story is entering the picture?"
"Yup!" the System said cheerfully. "Perfect timing, right?"
"That’s literally the WORST timing!" Heena hissed, keeping her voice low so passing servants wouldn’t hear. "We just dealt with Driver Li’s attack! We’re in the middle of political maneuvering with the old Master! I’m planning to investigate Maya’s past! And NOW the male lead shows up?!"
The System shrugged his little lion shoulders. "The plot doesn’t care about your schedule, Host. The male lead enters when the male lead enters."
Heena rubbed her temples, feeling a headache forming.
"Okay. OKAY. Fine. Tell me about this male lead. Who is he? What’s his deal? How did he and Maya meet in the original story?"
The System pulled up the information—Heena could see his eyes going slightly unfocused as he accessed the mission database.
"Right, so the male lead’s name is Chen Yifan. He’s a scholarly official who recently passed the imperial examinations and earned a prestigious position in the provincial administration. Age twenty-seven, unmarried, known for being upright and principled."
The System continued: "In the original plot, Maya was supposed to encounter him when she went to the temple to pray for her husband’s health—remember, this was after one of her fake illness schemes. She was crying dramatically at the temple when Chen Yifan saw her and was moved by her apparent devotion and suffering."
Heena groaned. "Let me guess. He was immediately enchanted by her beauty and perceived virtue?"
"Exactly!" the System confirmed. "He found her beautiful and admirable—a devoted wife suffering under difficult circumstances. She found him cultured and principled—everything her crude merchant husband wasn’t. They began a secret friendship that eventually led to romance, and he became her champion against the ’evil scheming servant Seera’ who was trying to seduce her husband."
Heena felt her headache intensifying. "So in the original story, the male lead actively HELPED Maya destroy Seera? Helped poison the original servant girl?"
The System nodded sadly. "He didn’t know about the poison—Maya told him that Seera was a manipulative seductress trying to break up her marriage and shame her husband’s household. He believed her because she was the ’pure, suffering heroine’ and acted accordingly. He used his official position and influence to help Maya maintain her reputation while they carried on their secret affair."
"Wonderful," Heena said sarcastically. "So the male lead is actually kind of an idiot who blindly believes whatever the crying pretty woman tells him."
"Well... yes," the System admitted. "That’s pretty standard for romantic male leads in these types of stories. They’re usually not that perceptive when it comes to reading people or situations. They see what they want to see."
Heena thought through the implications rapidly.
"So if Maya has just met this Chen Yifan, and he’s already showing interest in her, that means she now has a powerful new ally. Someone with official government position, education, and social standing who will believe her version of events without question."
The System nodded. "That’s the dangerous part, Host. In the original plot, Chen Yifan’s support was what allowed Maya to successfully eliminate Seera and get away with it. His influence kept the local authorities from investigating too thoroughly, his position gave Maya social protection she didn’t have before."
Heena began pacing, her strategic mind working through scenarios.
"This changes everything. Maya’s been losing ground—Driver Li arrested, her schemes backfiring, her credibility damaged. But now she has a potential ally who can provide her with resources and legitimacy she’s been lacking."
