Book 3, Chapter 294: Summoned

Su Wei was attacking a practice dummy repeatedly in a training center in Roaring Victory District.

Since he wasn’t wearing a shirt, all his muscles were rippling, and sweat was flying off his skin. Every hit contained a great deal of power, but none of his attacks dealt any obvious damage to the practice dummy, which showed just how great his control was.

Ever since coming to Central City, he had been waiting on standby, but he received a salary every month.

It wasn’t much, but it was enough to sustain him in Central City. Also, he didn’t need to do anything to get that money. It was something he had never even dared to dream of in the past.

Aside from buying daily necessities and training resources, he sent the rest of his money to the families of his crippled and dead former team members.

To Su Wei, Central City was a training heaven. Not only could he find martial arts forums, but he also didn’t need to worry about his vitalization rate all the time, much less be on guard against enemies who wanted to hurt or kill him.

Of course, this didn’t mean that security in Central City was great. It was simply because the average person couldn’t hurt him, since he was a Third Limit martial artist.

Besides, the danger level in Central City was much lower. When night settled in the merged space, everyone had to hide in the city. No one dared to step outside.

But here? He could go out whenever he wanted.

While he was training, his Realm Pass suddenly beeped, and he stopped to take a look before answering the call. “Captain?”

“I need to see you, Su Wei,” Chen Chuan said.

A serious expression settled on Su Wei’s face. “Where should we meet?”

Then, he saw a location on his Realm Pass.

“Over here.”

Su Wei checked it. It was at Roaring Victory District, and Chen Chuan had set the meeting time to before 11 a.m.. There was a little more than an hour to the meeting time, and the place wasn’t far away.

“I’ll head over right now,” he said.

Once the conversation was over, Su Wei took a quick shower, changed into clean clothes, and took a city tram. In around twenty minutes, he arrived at the designated location.

It was an abandoned commercial area. There were no familiar neon lights around, only walls covered in scribbles and weeds, homeless people and some others mumbling mystical nonsense while wandering about. Occasionally, a few cats and dogs ran past.

While he was looking around, he heard a voice in his Realm Pass. “Over here, Su Wei.”

Su Wei looked in the direction where the Realm Pass directed him and saw an unfinished building. By the looks of it, it was quite old. Su Wei walked along the debris-covered road. Once he was inside, he looked around and climbed to the roof through the uncovered stairwell.

Chen Chuan was waiting for him. “The government and companies have been increasing their watch over Central City, so they see every move every martial artist makes. It’s easier talking here.”

Su Wei wasn’t from Central City, so he wasn’t sensitive to the political situation in Central City, but he could tell that something was off just from Chen Chuan’s words.

Then, he took some time to think about what had happened recently. The City Patrol had been frequenting the apartment where he lived, and it hadn’t been this way when he just came to Central City.

In a stern voice, he asked, “What would you like me to do, Captain? Please tell me.”

Chen Chuan didn’t immediately tell him what his task was. Instead, after observing Su Wei for a while, he said, “Speaking of which, I didn’t test your strength before recruiting you. I’d like to test you today.”

“Alright!” Su Wei answered. His expression was completely serious. While Chen Chuan wasn’t as old as he was, from the way he had been able to figure out the number of enemies he faced and the strategies they used just from the sounds on the Realm Pass, he could tell that Chen Chuan was really strong.

After coming here, he also felt a sense of pressure that he couldn’t ignore, causing him to subconsciously tense up. This was an even clearer indication that Chen Chuan was stronger than him.

The roof was rather spacious, and the building was deserted, so they could fight freely.

Su Wei moved back a little and examined his opponent. When he saw that Chen Chuan had no intention of attacking, he stomped on the floor and charged forward. The floorboard trembled violently, and a large area shattered.

When he closed in on Chen Chuan, he threw a punch forward.

Chen Chuan remained still. The only thing he did was bring his arm up to block the punch.

At that moment, Su Wei was suspended in the air. Once his punch collided with Chen Chuan’s arm, the refined force he had been gathering in his body surged forward.

It was a two-tier refined force.

This method of attack was really popular among the masses, but there weren’t many who could use it well. Su Wei was one of the outstanding ones.

Of course, his goal wasn’t to defeat Chen Chuan in one go. He chose this attack because the roof wouldn’t be able to sustain their attacks. With this attack delivered, the floor under Chen Chuan’s feet would surely shatter. If he lost his balance, Su Wei might be able to find a better chance to attack, though he never entertained the idea of defeating him.

To his surprise, Chen Chuan withstood the refined force Su Wei sent into his body, and his feet did not even sway. That wasn’t all. The floorboard under him did not crack either.

Su Wei immediately realized that Chen Chuan’s mutated tissue had neutralized his attack and led the rest to other directions. This was a rather advanced technique.

When his attack failed, he delivered a kick before landing on the floor. It was perfectly chained to the punch, which showed that Su Wei had great coordination.

But with a strike, Chen Chuan blocked his kick.

Once Su Wei landed on the floor, he rushed at Chen Chuan again without hesitation to launch a fierce offense.

Chen Chuan didn’t take the initiative to attack. Instead, he stood still and only used a hand to negate his attacks.

The more Su Wei fought, the more disheartened he felt, but he was also impressed. Chen Chuan being able to do that meant that his speed and strength were far greater than his, so he could be relaxed in front of his attacks.

After trying dozens of moves, Su Wei knew that it was meaningless to keep attacking like this, so he retreated. “Captain, this is about all I can do when it comes to fighting barehanded. I’m going to use a weapon now.”

Chen Chuan nodded. “Of course. Go on.”

Su Wei took out a knife from his belt. He was the best at dual-wielding short spears, but he didn’t have a weapons permit and couldn’t walk around with such eyecatching weapons. That was why he hadn’t brought them with him. The knife would have to serve the same function.

After regulating his breathing, Su Wei took a swift step forward and thrust the knife.

Chen Chuan didn’t let the blade stab him. He used both hands to stop the knife and released a wave of refined force into Su Wei’s body.

Su Wei’s offense was severely limited by the counterattack from the refined force, and he couldn’t chain his attacks at all, which limited the danger he could pose to Chen Chuan.

Once Su Wei realized that he couldn’t fight headon, he changed his fighting style to one that was on the more bizarre side. He began including feints that could be switched into real attacks if he wanted, though none of the attacks landed.

While Chen Chuan never intentionally used mental energy, his biofield was spread outward, and he could clearly sense the fluctuations of other biofields. No matter what feints Su Wei used, his intentions were fully displayed before Chen Chuan’s eyes, and each of his attacks failed.

Su Wei didn’t give up in the face of such hardship. Suddenly, he jumped back, stomped down on the floor, and when a crack started stretching to where Chen Chuan stood, the floorboard collapsed.

Upon seeing this, Chen Chuan jumped back, but while he was still airborne, Su Wei threw his knife and used the power generated from the stomp to jump up as well. He then did a flip in the air and threw another knife he had kept hidden. Surprisingly, the second knife arrived in front of Chen Chuan sooner than the first one.

Chen Chuan could tell that the second knife was incredibly fast and filled with a penetrating force. Even though he could endure it, this was just a sparring session, so he had no need to do that. He turned to the side and avoided the knife.

However, when he did this, the first knife abruptly sped up.

Oh?

Chen Chuan figured it out. Su Wei had attached a two-tier refined force into the first knife, forming a combination attack where the first and second attacks could switch between feints and real attacks. That wasn’t all, though.

Su Wei arrived almost at the same time as the first knife and kicked at him.

Chen Chuan had yet to land. With a calm gaze, he watched the knife about to pierce the center of his brow get closer.

Shocked, Su Wei pulled his leg back and swung it up to kick the knife aside. He summoned his refined force too quickly to do this and lost his balance. He didn’t have any solid ground to regain his footing, so he started falling.

Chen Chuan reached out and grabbed his wrist to catch him. The floorboards underneath kept letting out loud rumbles. Several floors had been broken through, and a large hole had formed below them.

Chen Chuan landed on the roof’s fence and looked down at Su Wei. Then, he gently pulled him back up.

Su Wei jumped up with the help of the pull and landed beside Chen Chuan. After reviewing the fight, he sighed. “Looks like that final move was unnecessary. You didn’t need my help at all.”

Chen Chuan smiled. “You were merely reacting on instinct.”

At this point, he had a grasp of Su Wei’s strength. His foundation wasn’t as solid as those of Qin Qingque and Yuan Qiuyuan, but he had grown up in the unique environment in the merged space, and the way he moved showed great experience. In a fight to the death, Qin Qingque and Yuan Qiuyuan might not be able to defeat him.

Su Wei had grown up in the merged space. If he had been no good, he would have died a long time ago.

There was something else noteworthy. Aside from his instinctive reaction at the end, when Su Wei saw Chen Chuan standing still at the beginning, he did not try to go behind him. It was likely because he knew that it would be useless, but it also might be due to his personality.

Such things should only be directed toward his team members. Chen Chuan was pretty sure that Su Wei wouldn’t stick to such old-fashioned codes of honor against enemies.

This helped him understand Su Wei even more. He was a man who stayed true to himself but wasn’t one who didn’t know how to adapt.

Chen Chuan looked at the downtown area. “Central City is about to face some problems, and we might get missions related to them. I’ll need you to join us for them.”

Su Wei had spent a long time doing nothing and feeling like his position in the team wasn’t secure. Once he heard an order, his heart settled, and he saluted Chen Chuan rather awkwardly before saying sternly, “Understood, Captain!”
