Chapter 3: Fictional Player Stats and Game Introduction

First, of all the players who appear in this book, only two are fictional characters: Marcus Lynch and Logan Newman. All other players are real-life players. However, their specific situations may differ slightly from real life, because there are a vast number of NFL players, and it’s inevitable that some errors might appear in the research. If there are any discrepancies, I hope the readers will forgive them.

Second, in addition to weekly live football broadcasts and football movies, there are also football video games that interested readers can check out. One is Madden NFL, and the other is NFL Fantasy.

Madden NFL is a single-player football game, currently only available in English, for the Xbox and PS4. In the game, you can choose to play as one player—a quarterback, for instance—join a team, create various strategies, play through the regular season and playoffs, and lead your team to a championship. The newest version, Madden 18, even has a story mode.

Bambi’s player attributes, as well as those of Marcus and Logan, are all based on the player data and archetypes from Madden NFL. However, Bambi’s stats have been slightly adjusted for the purposes of the novel.

NFL Fantasy, on the other hand, is an online game. To put it simply, players first need to join an Alliance—I recommend the Fantasy game on the official NFL website, which is great for players proficient in English. There is also the Chinese football forum, "Touchdown Alliance," which has its own Fantasy game. After joining, the entire Alliance will consist of players from all over the world.

The Fantasy game is very simple. From the pool of active players, you can choose any players you like to build a complete team. Then, each week during the real-life regular season, it’s your time to shine. Before the games start, you need to set your starting lineup based on the real-life opponents your players will be facing.

However, you’ll need to take injured players, players on a bye week, and players in poor form into consideration. As the game goes on, you’ll need to do more and more homework. Each week, your team will face off against another opponent’s team in the Fantasy Alliance. Victory is determined by points, and your point total depends entirely on how your players perform in their real-life games.

Simply put, the better your players perform in real life, the better your Fantasy team will do. Similarly, if one of your players gets injured in real life, your Fantasy team is affected as well.

Most importantly, NFL Fantasy allows players to create their own Alliances. For example, readers of this book could create an Alliance just for themselves and play together, following the real-life season’s progress. Of course, if you don’t have enough players for your own Alliance, you can always join a public one.

Third, regarding the games featured in this book. A contributing author, Spring Path, has uploaded some of Bambi’s games to Bilibili. Interested readers can go to Bilibili and search for "King of the Bay Area" to find them. These video game matches are not in sync with the games in the book, but they can give readers a more visual way to understand the gameplay.
