Chapter 573: Chapter 573: Childbirth

A family welcoming a new life together is a wonderful thing.

However, it seems that the baby in Yue Ling’s belly might like the aunt she hasn’t met yet too much. On the night Yu Xia arrived, Yue Ling went into labor.

As soon as the water broke, Yue Ling was in so much pain that her brow furrowed tightly.

Yu Heng calmly called the doctor, while Yu Xia and Yu Yue stood in the corner, dazedly watching them.

They looked like two fools, so Yu Heng didn’t bother to acknowledge them, comforting Yue Ling. After the doctor arrived, he followed the bed being pushed into the delivery room.

The entire hallway was filled with Yu Heng’s calm voice.

Yu Xia and Yu Yue glanced at each other, realized what was happening, and then ran after them.

In the chairs outside the delivery room, the three Yu siblings sat in a row, craning their necks, trying to see through the solid door.

In this tense atmosphere, Yu Xia’s palms were sweating. She took a photo of the delivery room and sent it to Xie Qingci, giving him a live verbal broadcast and inviting him to witness the birth of the little niece.

[See! I told you! My sister-in-law might give birth today! Good thing I came back!]

Xie Qingci, who had already finished filming, quickly replied: [So soon?]

Yu Xia: [Maybe my little niece wanted to see me quickly, she wanted to come out as soon as I arrived]

Yu Xia: [Won’t talk to you now, I’ll tell you after she’s born]

She put away her phone, letting the already drowsy Yu Yue lean on her, then quietly asked her brother.

"How many hours will this take?"

Yu Heng propped his elbow on his thigh, lowered his head and gave a "hmm," his hands clasped together, his whole demeanor spelled anxiety.

She placed her hand on his shoulder, reminiscent of how he used to protect her while waiting for their father’s rescue—a wait for death versus a wait for new life.

She whispered:

"Sister-in-law is healthy, and so is the baby. Don’t overthink, it will be out soon."

"Hmm," perhaps not wanting to just wait idly, he randomly picked a topic to pass the time, "You visited Xie Qingci yesterday?"

"Yes, he was filming in the crew, I went to visit. Brother, if we visit his house for dinner in a month, what gift should we bring? It’s customary to bring something when visiting."

Yu Heng looked up at her without his usual stern face, using his experience, he said: "Just ask what Xie Qingci likes normally, not too expensive or too simple. He hasn’t formally visited us yet; no matter how poorly you behave, they can’t blame you."

She sighed, like complaining to him in junior high about overly enthusiastic classmates, whispering: "But he isn’t that close with his parents, doesn’t know what they like. And didn’t he already visit our home?"

"Formal visitation and dropping by for a meal aren’t the same."

"Then should I invite him over to our place first?"

Yu Heng glanced at her again: "Let’s not make it seem like an engagement visit. Just go for a meal and return."

"Oh. But I want to stay there for a couple of days; the ice-breaking festival there is quite fun. And this year is probably the only time his parents will visit; they might leave in two days."

"Do as you please," Yu Heng stared at the delivery room door, saying, "I can’t control you anymore, anyway."

Just as Yu Yue was about to fall asleep, he suddenly chuckled twice.

"Dad often says the same to me. Aunt, why are you like me?"

Yu Heng: "..."

Yu Xia: "..."

Her brother raising her was quite similar to raising a son or daughter, so there was some truth to that. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

Yu Heng wasn’t upset either, patting Yu Yue’s head: "Sleep, when you wake up, mom will be out."

After waiting for another two or three hours, there was finally some movement in the delivery room.

The nurse came out to inform them of the good news.

"The mother has given birth; congratulations to President Yu on having a baby boy! Nine pounds, everything is normal."

Yu Heng stood up when she pushed the door open. Just about to smile, he was momentarily bewildered by her words.

"What was born?"

Yu Xia walked up with Yu Yue, loudly telling him: "A son was born! Brother, your dream of a daughter just shattered!"

Yu Heng was dumbstruck.

He followed Yue Ling being pushed back to the ward, while Yu Xia and Yu Yue were assigned to follow the newborn for bathing and examinations.

They had never seen this process before, leaned against the glass window, watching closely, fearing the baby would get mixed up.

Yu Yue furrowed his brow more and more, quietly saying to Yu Xia, "Aunt, the little brother looks kind of... ugly."

Red and wrinkled, eyes closed, just wailing. Completely different from the "fragrant, soft, and particularly cute" that his father described.

Yu Xia looked down at him: "You used to look like this."

He showed a horrified expression.

"I used to be this ugly?"

"...After a few days, it won’t be like this."

The nurse passing by recognized her; seeing her and a child peeking in at the newborn bathing, she stopped by and looked in too, then quietly asked:

"Xiaxia, can I have your autograph?"

Yu Xia was almost startled, and after giving her signature with a smile, the nurse shyly said, "Xiaxia, you’re so cute like this."

Then she ran off.

Yu Xia and Yu Yue stood there, bewildered.

"What did she say?"

Yu Yue: "Cute? Aunt, can someone in their twenties be cute?"

"...None of your business, watch the baby."

After the bath and examination, the newborn was placed in an incubator and transferred to Yue Ling’s ward.

They followed closely, looked over the incubator, blocking most of Yue Ling and Yu Heng’s view.

Yu Heng cleaned Yue Ling’s face and waved them aside.

"It’s fine for Yu Yue to be curious; why are you curious too? You’ve seen them before. Hands, don’t poke inside."

Yu Xia sheepishly withdrew her hand and stood up to care for Yue Ling.

Her face was slightly pale, her hair soaked with sweat, yet she was still gentle.

"Push it closer for me to see."

Yu Heng pushed the baby closer, frowning at the little one inside, seemingly finding it hard to believe why the daughter he had hoped for turned out to be a son.

Yue Ling, just after giving birth, knew he’d definitely be in disbelief, and his current expression wasn’t far off.

She softly called Yu Heng: "Hold him."

Just-born babies are delicate, with the nurse and Yu Xia’s assistance, Yu Heng carefully held the baby, supporting his small head, looked at the little mouth puckering, and then handed the baby to Yu Xia.

"Hold him."

Yu Xia let out an "ah," awkwardly extending her hands, then retracting them.

"I don’t know how to hold him; his neck is so thin, what if I hurt him?"

Yu Heng: "You used to hold Yu Yue, what are you afraid of? Hurry up, he’s sniffing towards you."

Yu Xia glanced at Yue Ling, saw her encouraging look, and awkwardly took the little bundle.

The little one was as floppy as a noodle, she didn’t dare use any strength.

Her head was slightly muddled; glancing at Yu Heng by Yue Ling’s bedside, she suddenly felt a peculiar sensation—

Why did it seem like she was more like the dad?

This cautiousness, this uncertain inner turbulence, this novice dad’s awkward movements, all seemed more fitting than Yu Heng’s role.
