Skill Extraction: Exploring Dungeons
Chapter 943 - 815: The World of Spirits
Near the gates of this ordinary small town.
Carriages and various travelers came and went, making a brief stop here.
Various inns and lodges were almost all located nearby.
A stone inn—it’s unclear whether it’s because the prices here are slightly more expensive than other inns around, or if it’s because there are fewer people this season.
The entire second floor of the inn had only Umberto staying.
Umberto deliberately chose this place for that reason.
At this moment, in Umberto’s room, besides himself, Kane and others were also present.
"This room is a bit small, I apologize in advance."
Kane waved his hand: "It’s fine."
Although it’s a bit cramped here, both the stone slabs on the floor and the surrounding wooden furniture looked quite tidy, at least not dirty enough to make one frown.
Then he waved his hand over the floor, and a thick carpet spread across it.
Kreya and the others naturally sat on the carpet and then placed a small table on it.
Various snacks were taken out by Kreya and Lirulu from their space equipment and placed on the small table.
The two naturally slipped into a sort of afternoon tea state.
Then, they filled a pot with hot drinks and poured a cup for everyone.
Kane handed a cup to Umberto next to him.
Umberto was dazed for a moment, then took the cup handed to him by Kane with both hands: "Oh, thank you."
He didn’t expect that this would be the scene even before their conversation had started.
Wouldn’t this seem too relaxed?
"Don’t mind it, if you don’t mind, you can join us too. These are all rare delicious food."
Umberto still felt it was too strange, so he waved off Kane’s offer, holding the warm beverage with both hands.
Feeling the warmth transfer from the teacup into his palms.
"In that case, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. We won’t hold back any information."
Kane said to Umberto after popping a candy into his mouth.
Compared to them, the person in front evidently needed more questions answered to build basic trust between them.
It’s primarily because the whole world is too weak, so Kane and the others have been quite relaxed since entering it.
They only kept the most basic vigilance.
Hearing Kane’s words, Umberto was taken aback, then nodded.
He reached out and gestured around.
Kane acknowledged this action, signaling the necessity for quiet.
"Around the age of 16, this world shattered. As for how it happened, no one has found out, but this world fragment somehow survived.
But in the following years, I could gradually feel that the life of this world fragment was diminishing, that the world was becoming chaotic.
But... about three years ago, this situation completely disappeared. After some inquiries, I realized what you just mentioned—the world has been protected."
"It feels like being back in the old world again. Although it’s not getting better, at least it’s no longer deteriorating."
Saying this, Umberto took a deep breath.
Then he slowly asked, "I want to know, what does this great presence intend to gain from this world?"
If they are willing to spend a price to protect a dying world fragment, then they surely want something in return.
This was Umberto’s initial understanding, and indeed it made sense.
Protecting a world fragment from worsening would surely demand a lot of expense, at least to Umberto’s knowledge.
Kane stared at Umberto and slowly said.
"Everything."
"Everything? What do you mean by everything...?"
Umberto looked surprised but also relieved.
"Rest assured, everything doesn’t imply anything bad for you. In fact, it’s a good thing for you."
"What the Mist wants is for you to become part of our world, so you can return to normalcy and not suffer the pains of destruction as you did before."
Saying this, Kane pointed to himself and then to Kreya and the others.
"You should see; the five of us are from different races. We all come from the world of the Mist. Our ancestors were once like you, and now we are doing just fine, so there’s no need for psychological burden."
After finishing, Kane said no more, just picked up a pastry from the table and started to eat slowly.
Meanwhile, Umberto let his head droop reflecting on something.
After a moment, he looked up at Kane and the others.
"If things are as you say, then indeed it’s a good thing for this world."
The main thing was, after some thought, Umberto couldn’t understand what benefit Kane and the others would obtain by deceiving them.
Unless they were malicious people who found amusement in it.
Though he couldn’t gauge the true power of Kane and the others, the spirits around him informed him.
Any one of these five individuals could crush his world to dust.
Their strength was far beyond his comprehension.
Perhaps they should be called gods.
In other words, he was actually conversing with five deities, talking and laughing with them.
Umberto chuckled and shook his head.
Thinking this way made their words even more believable.
But Umberto still asked, "Then, why have you come here specifically?"
Is his world worth the descent of five deities?
"It’s quite simple. There is danger in your world that could threaten ordinary life. If not identified and eradicated, it may cause immeasurable casualties, and that’s why we are here."
"Dangerous things?"
Umberto was somewhat confused; he was born and raised in this world and hadn’t found anything threatening ordinary life.
Kane looked at Umberto’s expression and knew he might not know what was causing it either.
"Don’t worry, we’ll find out. What may seem trivial to you might be fatal to others."
Hearing this, Umberto seemed to understand and nodded.
"Perhaps I can go with you, after all, I’m quite familiar with this world and could assist you in many places."
Kane didn’t reject Umberto’s offer but nodded instead.
"No problem."
Then Kane looked at Umberto and said, "Now that you’ve asked what you wanted, it’s our turn."
"Of course, I’ll tell you everything I’ve got." Umberto sat up straight and nodded.
"Alright, the first question," Kane raised a finger and said.
"What do you mean by spirits?"
"Spirits?"
Umberto thought for a moment, exhaled a puff of mist, and a glowing creature was bound by the mist and dragged in front of everyone.
He can touch them? He really has some skills.
Umberto pointed to the glowing creature in front of him and asked, "You should be able to see these glowing little creatures, right?"
Kane and the others nodded.
"These little things are the so-called spirits. They used to be everywhere in this world, but now they appear in places where humans gather."
"Essentially, in our eyes, you and these spirits are similar.
Much stronger spirits." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
Hearing Umberto’s words, Kane asked perplexedly, "Why is that so? Is it because of magic power?"
"Magic power?" Umberto seemed confused, as he hadn’t heard of this strange term.
"I don’t understand what magic power is, but you all share one common factor, which is the flowing life force."
After speaking, Umberto pointed his finger at his abdomen and then moved upward, continuing until he reached his eyes.
"This is the flowing life force; ordinary people can’t control these forces to flow in their bodies."
Looking at the magic power in Umberto’s body, it extended along his fingers all the way to his eyes.
Isn’t this magic power? Just called by another name.
"The life force you mentioned is what I call magic power."
"Oh, I see."
However, after listening to Umberto’s explanation, Kane asked, "So, ordinary people can’t see the flowing creatures that are the magic power in their bodies. Only when the magic power in their body is dead, even nonexistent, can ordinary people see it, right?"
After thinking for a while, Umberto nodded in response to Kane’s question.
"Yes, there’s no problem explaining it this way."
Afterward, Kane pondered for a while before pointing at Umberto and asking.
"Are there many people in this world like you who have abilities?"
Umberto shook his head: "Being born able to control life is extremely rare, and mastering this technique requires inheritance."
"As the world shattered, many inheritances broke off. Now, people who can control life due to inheritance do not exceed 10."
"So few."
This surprised Kane a bit; one could feel this world fragment imbued with life wasn’t small, and considering the current environment, the population wouldn’t be low either.
Yet, there’s less than 10 talented individuals, which is indeed excessively rare.
After chatting for so much, although gaining some understanding of the world, they still had no clue about their target.
Thinking about this, Kane asked, "What were you planning before you came here?"
"Me? I heard there was a prophet in this city, so I came to see if he was ill."
Umberto said calmly.
"What kind of illness does the prophet have? Why do you assume that?"
A bit baffled, if the prophet had acquired some peculiar ability, it’d be understandable. But why assume illness upfront?
"I don’t know either; that’s why I planned to come and take a look."
"Alright then."
Maybe it’s a unique way of thinking in this world.
After considering for a while, Kane said, "We still have no leads on the crisis event in this world, so you just do your thing. We’ll observe, perhaps discovering some clues."
Umberto nodded after hearing Kane’s words.
"I’m planning to go see the prophet now."
"Then let’s go together."
Umberto nodded, got up, grabbed the wooden box on the bedside, and opened the door to go downstairs. Kane and the others also got up, packed up, and followed behind him.
"Ah, doctor, you’re down. We’ve finished selling the food and are heading back."
As they walked down, they happened to meet the caravan from the village at the inn’s entrance.
Umberto nodded, waved his hand, and said, "Goodbye, thanks for bringing me along, and I wish you a safe journey."
"You too, doctor. We look forward to seeing you next time."
Saying that, the villagers drove their empty carts away.
Umberto merely glanced at their backs, carrying the wooden box on his back, moving toward the city center.
Kane and the others followed behind, observing the city’s conditions.
Most are ordinary stone-built houses, with quite a few wooden-structure cabins.
The tallest wouldn’t exceed three stories, though called a city, it’s quite small.
Whether its population exceeded ten thousand is questionable.
Looking at the ordinary civilians by the roadside and beggars in the streets.
Narrow and filthy city, exuding poverty.
