Chapter 252 - 200: Sponsorship
Sanders drove Chen Yu to the Wood District.
Chen Yu clutched his phone, waiting for a call from Baggio, but it never rang.
Unable to wait any longer, Chen Yu gave Guardiola a call.
No one answered.
It was the same when he tried Baggio.
He had no idea what was going on with the two of them.
But Chen Yu had his own methods. He searched through his contacts and dialed the general manager of Brescia, Mauro Pedrazzoli, directly.
This time, the call went through.
After hearing Chen Yu’s reason for calling, Pedrazzoli sighed and said, "Chen, personally, I of course support Josep coming to the United States for treatment. But as for where he gets that treatment, our club can only offer suggestions. The final decision is still his to make. But don’t worry, I will try to persuade him."
Finally, he added another "thank you."
This season, Brescia’s only mission was to avoid relegation.
Early on, since Guardiola hadn’t been implicated in the Nandrolone case, he had helped Brescia secure a good number of points.
Later, Baggio returned to health and was in decent form. Brescia was now out of the relegation zone, having achieved their season’s goal early.
"Sorry to trouble you," Chen Yu said with a sigh before hanging up.
Just then, the car arrived at its destination.
The free clinic was set up in Murray Park. When Chen Yu got out of the car, a large crowd had already gathered.
To put it bluntly, the Wood District was Chicago’s slum. Never mind seeing a doctor at a hospital, just calling an ambulance could bankrupt a family.
A nationally renowned medical expert like Chen Yu was offering a free clinic. Who wouldn’t want to come?
Though the crowd was large, it was quite orderly.
Vogel’s men, along with officers sent by the police department, were there to maintain order.
"Captain Toliver," Chen Yu greeted, a bit surprised.
Chen Yu recognized the black police captain in front of him, who looked like Morgan Freeman. He was the officer who had come to notify Chen Yu of his father’s violent death and had taken him to identify the body.
Toliver smiled and hugged Chen Yu, then looked at him with a sense of gratification.
His memory of Chen Yu was of a thin child who hadn’t cried or made a fuss when faced with his father’s gruesome death.
Toliver had seen many children like that in the Wood District. Most of them ended up going down the same old path. Chen Yu was the only one who, through his own hard work, had achieved what he had today.
"I heard from Vogel that you’re planning to open a clinic in the community. That’s wonderful. On behalf of the community, I want to thank you," Toliver said with a smile.
Chen Yu shook his head, indicating it wasn’t necessary. Seeing that everything was ready up ahead, he prepared to go over.
"By the way, Toliver, if you have time, go get a physical. Trust me, you really should," Chen Yu added, stopping and turning back with a serious expression.
In Toliver’s abdomen, Chen Yu had spotted a nasty little spot.
Toliver paused for a moment, then nodded.
Two tables and a half-competent doctor from a small clinic as an assistant—that was the entirety of the free clinic.
But Chen Yu didn’t mind. He had his Eye of All-Seeing, after all.
As for how he diagnosed the illnesses, there was no need to explain to these people. They wouldn’t understand even if he did.
In this chaotic, gang-ridden environment, broken arms and legs were an everyday occurrence.
Coincidentally, these were Chen Yu’s specialty.
He treated what he could on the spot. For what he couldn’t, he advised them on how to get treatment. He prescribed medicine when possible; for those he couldn’t help, they could only pray for the best.
It was impossible to expect them to go to a hospital for treatment.
However, Chen Yu did notice a large number of patients with kidney problems.
They were also accompanied by issues like anemia, constipation, and abdominal pain.
Chen Yu quickly identified the problem: lead poisoning.
"Captain, have the pipes around here been replaced?" Chen Yu asked Vogel during a break.
Chicago was the city with the most lead water pipes in the entire United States.
As far back as the nineties, the city government had been talking about replacing them, but he had no idea if the replacements had ever reached the Wood District.
Vogel guessed why Chen Yu was asking and said with some resentment, "I’ve reported it to the city government many times, but that damned mayor always uses ’no money’ as an excuse. Meanwhile, those neighborhoods by the lake are constantly being renovated. I think they just don’t want to deal with us."
Chen Yu sighed but was powerless to help.
All he could do was prescribe medication. Fortunately, calcium disodium edetate, the treatment for lead poisoning, wasn’t very expensive.
As he was working, a young man brought a child to his table.
Chen Yu looked up and was slightly taken aback.
’Isn’t that the kid I met before? I think his name was Derek Rose.’
"Captain."
The young man next to Rose greeted Vogel respectfully. He was probably in a gang.
Vogel, however, just shot him a dismissive glance without reacting, clearly indicating he was a nobody.
But when he saw Rose, he paused, then pointed at him and said, "You’re that kid from the Rose family. I know you, you’re great at basketball."
Rose looked nervous and didn’t dare to speak. The young man beside him quickly nodded and said fawningly, "Captain, you have an amazing memory. That’s right, my brother is an incredible basketball player."
Vogel pointed at Rose and said to Chen, "Chen, this kid is amazing at basketball. No one his age is a match for him. Don’t the Suns have scouts? Can you recommend him?"
At the mention of the Suns, Rose, who had been looking down shyly after recognizing Chen Yu, instantly snapped his head up. His gaze on Chen Yu was intensely fervent.
The young man beside him had the same expression.
Chen Yu was tempted to give Vogel the middle finger. ’This guy is something else. I agree to build a clinic and he’s still not satisfied? What, now he wants me to recommend players to the Suns?’
’What is he thinking?’
’And as for dominating kids his own age, isn’t that normal?’
’Every player who makes it to the NBA was a prodigy. At his age, even if he is a genius, it’s way too early.’
’He needs to make a name for himself in high school first.’
’If he does, scouts will naturally notice him. He doesn’t need my recommendation.’
"Come here, let me see your arm."
Chen Yu gestured for Rose to come over.
His left arm was hanging limply, and there was a scrape on his elbow. He had probably taken a fall.
The wound was fresh. He wasn’t injured when Chen Yu saw him yesterday, so he must have fallen again since then.
"Can you bend it?" Chen Yu asked, holding the thin arm.
Rose shook his head.
He had a hairline fracture of the olecranon from the fall.
But it wasn’t too serious. A cast would be enough.
Just then, Rose asked timidly, "Sir, are you with the Suns?"
Before Chen Yu could answer, a young man in line behind him said, "Kid, you don’t even know who he is? He’s the Suns’ team doctor."
Rose’s eyes lit up.
At that moment, the young man beside him suddenly said, "Sir, our Derek is incredibly talented at basketball. Derek, quick, show the gentleman what you can do."
He turned and ran off, quickly returning with a worn-out basketball. He handed it to Rose, urging him to go.
Chen Yu didn’t expect him to be serious. He raised a hand and said it wasn’t necessary.
The boy’s arm was still injured.
"You have to, you have to." The young man paid him no mind and pulled Rose over to a nearby backboard.
"Go on, Rose’s kid, give us a dunk!"
"Yeah, let’s see what you’ve got!"
Others in the crowd started to heckle.
But it was clear they were just looking for a show, with a heavy dose of mockery.
Chen Yu sighed and called for the next person.
It was a guy with a large tumor on his leg. It was ulcerated and gave off a foul, rotting stench.
Another case of an illness left untreated until it had gotten this bad.
Chen Yu sighed inwardly. There wasn’t much he could do, just provide some basic cleaning and dressing.
While he was working, Rose actually started playing on the side.
Using only his good hand, he dribbled, went for layups, and even took some shots.
Chen Yu glanced over out of the corner of his eye. ’You know what, the kid actually has some skills.’
After spending two years with an NBA team, Chen Yu had developed a decent eye for talent.
The boy’s fundamentals were a bit weak, probably from a lack of formal training.
But he had a great feel for the ball, and his movements were agile and fluid.
Chen Yu was now starting to believe what Vogel had said about Rose being unbeatable among his peers.
But that was as far as it went.
At his age, you couldn’t tell much. And honestly, he was a little short and a bit too skinny.
"Sir, did you see that? My brother’s a genius!" the young man shouted excitedly to Chen Yu.
Chen Yu gave a polite, perfunctory nod.
’There are plenty of geniuses out there, but how many of them actually make it?’
’Everyone knows that getting into the NBA makes you a millionaire, but the NBA isn’t that easy to get into.’
’But the kid is a real fighter.’
’And with an injured arm, no less.’
Beside him, Vogel, who had been watching Rose play with a smile, suddenly said, "Chen, you see, we have a lot of kids like this in our community. But they just lack an opportunity. I’ve always wanted to do something for them, like renovating the court, or maybe giving them some financial assistance."
"You lived here. You should understand. They don’t get enough to eat, and they have to work to help their families. They have no time to play basketball. So many of them just waste their talent."
Chen Yu shot Vogel a speechless glance. ’This guy’s whole speech can be boiled down to two words: "Give money."’
’He’s really treating me like a cash cow.’
Chen Yu was definitely not giving any more money. Helping open a clinic was more than generous enough.
But since the man had asked, Chen Yu couldn’t just brush him off. After a moment’s thought, he said, "How about this. If the clinic turns a profit, I’ll take the profits and set up a sponsorship fund to support these talented kids."
The clinic would be opened in his name, and his name alone was a sign of quality. Most importantly, Chen Yu also promised to make time for consultations if there were any particularly serious cases. If the patients could afford it, they could also come to Phoenix for treatment.
This was essentially another way for people to see him, and that was the most valuable thing of all.
So, it was possible the clinic might actually be profitable.
’It’s just pie in the sky for now, so I might as well promise to donate it.’
Vogel’s eyes lit up. He turned and gave Chen Yu a hug, then raised Chen Yu’s arm and shouted to the crowd, "Did you all hear that? Our esteemed Dr. Chen is willing to donate all the profits from the clinic to sponsor our children! Let’s thank him for his contribution to the community!"
The people in line started to cheer, but without much enthusiasm. They figured that even if Chen Yu really did donate the money, it would most likely end up in Vogel’s pocket.
Chen Yu guessed what they were thinking.
Since he had decided to donate, he wanted to do something tangible. He could have someone manage the matter specifically when the time came.
Or instead of giving money, he could provide food and drinks directly, or maybe set up a cafeteria to feed these kids.
Compared to money, at their age, eating and drinking well was the most important thing.
Perhaps he could start with this kid named Rose.
Chen Yu looked toward Rose, who had finished his demonstration and was now looking at him, panting and full of expectation.
’Maybe he’ll actually make it big someday.’
