Chapter 149: [149] : Founding the Eclipse Legion, The Meritocracy

Declan walked down the heavy stone stairs of the central keep. He stepped out into the crowded courtyard of the Iron Bastion.

The three thousand surviving players were buzzing with chaotic energy. They were pointing at the new massive black iron walls and the updated system banners floating in the sky. They knew something big had just happened.

The city felt different. It felt heavier and infinitely more secure.

Declan ignored the stares and the whispers. He walked straight toward the main gate.

Sloane was sitting behind her large mahogany desk. She looked completely exhausted. Her white medical tunic was covered in dirt and digital ash, and she had dark bags under her eyes. She was furiously tapping on three different holographic screens at the exact same time.

Kendra was standing right next to her. The archer was holding her +10 Sniper Bow tightly. She kept a paranoid watch over the restless crowd, ready to shoot anyone who tried to rush the Quartermaster.

"Quartermaster," Declan called out as he approached the desk.

Sloane jumped slightly and let out a long sigh. "Boss. Please tell me you didn’t just blow up another part of the map. I am still trying to catalog the loot from the last one. We have three thousand rusty iron swords I don’t know what to do with."

"I upgraded the city," Declan said casually. "We are now a Level 6 Systemic Sovereign Faction. The Eclipse Legion."

Sloane stared at him. She dropped her hands from the glowing keyboards.

"Level 6? The apocalypse just started yesterday! The biggest corporate guilds in Sector 1 are maybe Level 2 right now. How did you even do that?"

"I pressed a button," Declan replied. He didn’t want to explain his SSS-Rank talent to her again. It just gave people headaches. "Listen up. I want to build a real army. The refugees running around with rusty swords are fine for clearing out low-level rats, but I need elite soldiers, it sounds like fun."

Sloane crossed her arms. "You want to recruit? From this crowd? Look around, Declan. Most of them are accountants, delivery drivers, and retail workers. They aren’t exactly special ops."

"They will be," Declan said. "Open up the faction recruitment tab. I am creating exactly one thousand elite slots for the Eclipse Legion."

He tapped a few commands into his Warlord interface and shared the new permissions with Sloane.

"One thousand slots," Sloane read the screen. "Okay. What are the requirements to join? Level 20? A specific combat class?"

"That is the fun part," Declan smiled. It was a highly capitalist, ruthless smile. "There are no level requirements. There are no gear requirements. It is a pure meritocracy."

"A what?" Kendra asked, leaning in closer.

"We run this city on raw production," Declan explained. "Sloane, set up a massive contribution board right in the middle of the plaza. I want every single monster core, every piece of Void-Ore, and every bit of raw material tracked and ranked publicly."

Sloane’s eyes lit up. She understood exactly where this was going. "A leaderboard."

"Exactly," Declan nodded. "The top one thousand players who bring in the most resources get a spot in the Eclipse Legion. If you slack off, you drop in rank, and you lose your spot to the guy working harder than you."

"That is brutal," Kendra muttered. She looked at the desperate crowd. "They are going to be fighting each other for the monster drops."

"They are going to be highly motivated," Declan corrected her. He opened his massive digital treasury. "And to make sure they actually want to join, we are going to pay them."

Declan pulled out a thick stack of glowing silver vials and heavy, high-tier skill books. He dropped them onto Sloane’s desk with a loud clatter.

"These are EXP-boosting potions," Declan pointed to the vials. "They grant a flat three hundred percent experience multiplier for 24 hours. And these are advanced combat manuals. Only official members of the Eclipse Legion get access to this gear."

Sloane picked up one of the silver vials. Her jaw dropped open.

"Three hundred percent? Declan, these are insanely rare! Where did you even get these?"

He wasn’t going to mention the black market AI he had tethered to the city. "List the rewards on the board. Tell them the top ten contributors every week get a free +10 weapon upgrade directly from my personal forge."

"They are going to lose their minds," Sloane laughed. The tired retail manager was suddenly completely energized. "They will strip-mine the entire wasteland just to get one of those potions. You just created a literal rat race."

"I created an economy," Declan said. "Post it."

Sloane rapidly typed on her keyboard. A massive golden leaderboard materialized in the center of the courtyard. It displayed the current rankings and the absurd rewards for the top one thousand spots.

The crowd of players read the board. Total silence echoed through the entire courtyard like a dark blanket. The silence stretched on from five seconds to ten seconds, all the way to fifteen seconds!

They processed the numbers. They processed the rewards. Then, absolute chaos erupted.

"I need a party!" a guy in a ruined business suit screamed at the top of his lungs. "Looking for three DPS! We are going to farm the Ashlands right now!"

"Move!" a woman yelled, shoving past a group of players. "I call dibs on the spider caves!"

The terrified refugees vanished. They were replaced instantly by thousands of greedy, highly motivated gamers desperate to secure their spot in the Warlord’s elite army. They grabbed their weapons and sprinted for the city gates, completely ignoring the toxic rain outside. They just wanted the loot.

Declan watched them run. He looked very satisfied.

"Alright," Declan said, stretching his arms over his head. "The workforce is motivated. The city is secure. I am taking a break."

"You are logging out?" Kendra asked.

"No, I am going to sleep," Declan replied. He pointed up at the massive, dark iron keep towering over the courtyard.

He opened his base-building menu. He had millions of points. He didn’t want to sleep on a cold stone floor anymore.

He selected the central keep. He navigated to the Upgrades tab. He found the most expensive, ridiculous luxury package available in the system.

[Base Upgrade Menu]

↳ Purchase: Sovereign-Tier Penthouse Upgrade

↳ Cost: 500,000 Origin Points

Declan tapped the button without hesitating.

The heavy iron walls of the keep suddenly shifted. The metal groaned and expanded. Large, bulletproof glass windows pushed outward, offering a panoramic view of the entire city. The rough stone floors smoothed out into polished dark wood.

Declan walked up the stairs and into his new room. It was massive. It had a giant leather couch, a fully stocked digital refrigerator that converted mana into fresh food, and a massive king-sized bed with thick, clean sheets.

It was a literal palace sitting in the middle of the apocalypse.

Declan dismissed his pitch-black Predator’s Coat. He took off his heavy spiked boots. His physical brain was completely exhausted from the constant system overrides and the raw combat.

He dropped onto the soft mattress. He didn’t even check his notifications. He was asleep in seconds.
