Chapter 101: The Siege of Ironhold
Dante and his squad materialized in a flash of blue light directly inside the grand hall of the Lord’s Keep.
The City Lord of Ironhold was already on his feet.
The massive NPC wasn’t sitting idly on his gear-driven throne.
He was pacing furiously in front of a giant glowing holographic map of the perimeter of the city.
Heavily armored NPC lieutenants were rushing around the hall. They shouted orders and coordinated localized defense protocols.
Dante didn’t wait for a polite greeting. He marched straight up to the map.
"They are coming," Dante stated flatly.
"A Level 25 Dark Demon boss named Void-Bishop Morgrim. He opened a massive portal in the Sky Demon Forest and generated an army of thousands of corrupted beasts. They are marching directly on the southern gates."
The glowing artificial eyes of the City Lord locked onto Dante.
"I know," the City Lord said. His voice was completely devoid of its usual majestic scripted echo. It sounded grim and heavily stressed.
"The detection arrays on the outer walls picked up the massive surge in necrotic energy five minutes ago."
"The garrison is mobilizing, but the city defenses were designed to repel standard monster migrations, not a concentrated targeted siege by a Dark Demon."
"Where are the players?" Lila asked and looked around the frantic hall. "Ironhold has tens of thousands of registered users."
"Most of the high-level guilds are currently engaged in a massive territorial dispute in the southern forests," the City Lord replied and gestured vaguely toward the map.
"They are killing each other in the mud while the boss walks past them," Casanova translated and shook his head. "Classic guild politics."
Before Dante could offer to fly out and drop a hurricane on the marching horde, the system violently hijacked the environment.
A massive blaring siren echoed across the entire city. It wasn’t the standard alert.
It was a deep resonating war horn that physically rattled the stained glass windows of the Keep.
The sky above Ironhold had previously been a clear blue. It rapidly darkened and turned a sickly bruised purple as the corruption aura of the Void-Bishop preceded his army.
A massive server-wide announcement projected itself in bold blazing crimson text across the sky.
[CRITICAL EVENT TRIGGERED: THE SIEGE OF IRONHOLD]
[A Dark Demon entity has launched a coordinated assault on the Veridian Alliance Capital.]
[Objective: Defend the southern gates. If the Void-Bishop breaches the inner sanctum, Ironhold will be permanently degraded to a Tier-1 Outpost, and all local player assets will be seized.]
The penalty was catastrophic.
Losing Ironhold meant losing the entire economic hub of the Veridian region.
But the Zenith Protocol never offered a stick without a massive game-breaking carrot.
The text shifted from crimson to a brilliant glowing gold.
[Siege Event Modifiers Active]
[1. Resolve of the Defenders: All players participating in the defense of Ironhold receive a 50% bonus to all EXP gained. All loot drop rates from siege monsters are increased by 100%.]
[2. Blood of the Vanguard: Players receive a cumulative stacking +1% bonus to all base stats for every 10 siege monsters personally killed. Stacks infinitely for the duration of the event.]
[3. Crown of the Executioner: The player who secures the final killing blow on Void-Bishop Morgrim will receive an instant guaranteed +1 Level, regardless of current progression, and an exclusive server-unique title.]
The silence in the grand hall was palpable.
Dante stared at the golden text.
An infinite stacking stat buff based on raw kill counts. Double loot. And an instant guaranteed level-up for securing the boss kill.
At Level 58, the experience required for Dante to reach Level 59 was astronomical. Skipping that grind entirely was an absurd reward.
"The system is practically begging us to kill them," Mei grinned. She pulled the [God-Slaying Skillet] off her back.
"It is working," Casanova said and pointed toward the high windows of the Keep.
Out in the city, the panic was instantly vaporized by sheer unfiltered greed.
The thousands of players who had stayed behind in the city, including crafters, low-level merchants, and casual groups, were currently sprinting toward the southern walls and grabbed whatever weapons they could find.
More importantly, the massive alliance army currently tearing itself apart in the Sky Demon Forest had seen the announcement.
The promise of infinite stacking stats and a guaranteed level-up instantly ended their localized civil war.
Vanguard’s Legacy, the Black Dragon Syndicate, and the Apex Coalition immediately stopped fighting each other.
They turned their entire surviving forces north and desperately rushed back toward Ironhold to claim the glory before the casual players stole it.
"The guilds are coming," Lila noted. She watched the red dots on the map of the City Lord rapidly approach the southern perimeter.
"Let them," Dante said and turned away from the map. "They can fight the horde on the ground. We are taking the high road."
Dante didn’t use the stairs.
He activated [Meteor Stride] and rapidly teleported his squad directly to the top of the massive eighty-foot-tall southern wall of Ironhold.
They materialized on the wide stone battlements and overlooked the sprawling green plains that led to the forest.
The view was terrifying.
A massive rolling black tide of corrupted beasts was pouring out of the tree line.
Thousands of mutated hounds, hulking bone-golems, and sludge-spewing horrors marched relentlessly toward the city walls.
At the absolute rear of the army, flanked by massive heavily armored elite guards, walked Void-Bishop Morgrim.
The towering Dark Demon boss was casually strolling toward the city, and his glowing red eye staff pulsed with dark magic.
Down on the plains, the scattered disorganized remnants of the three rival guilds were already clashing with the frontline of the beast horde.
It was a chaotic bloody mess. Players were screaming, magic was flying wildly, and the stacking stat buffs were driving people to fight with reckless abandon.
"Boss," Mei said and looked over the edge of the wall. "Do you want me to jump down there and start swinging? I can hold the main gate."
"No," Dante said, his voice completely calm. "Stay up here. Protect Lila."
"What are you going to do?" Casanova asked. He stayed safely behind a stone crenellation.
Dante didn’t answer.
He didn’t draw [Voidsever]. He didn’t unclip the [Bow of the Eclipse].
He opened his infinite inventory.
He had a massive 9,130 health pool. He had [Chrono-Shift] eliminating all his mana costs.
He had a vantage point that offered a perfect unobstructed view of the entire battlefield.
He didn’t need to fight them in melee. He didn’t need to risk getting dragged into the chaotic cluster of rival guild players trying to steal kills. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
Dante pulled out a small incredibly cheap gray skillbook he had bought for two copper coins from a vendor on his first day in Outpost 404.
[Item Appraised: Skillbook - Arcane Bolt]
[Tier: Novice]
[Description: A basic magical attack. Fires a slow-moving low-damage bolt of raw mana. Cooldown: 2 seconds.]
It was the most fundamental and useless spell in the entire game. Mages actively unequipped it the second they learned a real ability.
Dante tapped the cover.
[Skill Learned: Arcane Bolt (Novice)]
He stepped up to the edge of the wall and looked down at the massive swarming horde of thousands of monsters.
He raised his right hand and pointed his open palm directly at the center of the beast army.
[Skill Executed: Arcane Bolt.]
The anomaly triggered.
[Talent Activated: 10,000x Multiplier.]
[Registering 10,000 flawless executions.]
The combat enlightenment wasn’t about kinetic force or spatial displacement.
It was the absolute mastery of raw unadulterated magical energy.
Dante understood how to compress localized mana into incredibly dense and hyper-volatile packets.
He learned how to manipulate light and heat to completely override atmospheric resistance.
He felt the exact frequency required to turn a simple magical spark into a sustained localized beam of total annihilation.
[Arcane Bolt has reached Adept tier.]
[Arcane Bolt has reached Master tier.]
[Arcane Bolt has reached Grandmaster tier.]
The air around the gauntlet of Dante didn’t just glow.
It actively warped and generated a high-pitched whine that sounded like a jet engine spinning up.
[Arcane Bolt has reached Zenith tier.]
[Skill Evolution Triggered.]
[Arcane Bolt has evolved into: Cataclysmic Ray.]
The system interface flashed a blinding searing white.
[Cataclysmic Ray (Zenith)]
[Description: The ultimate expression of concentrated magical artillery. Fires a continuous and devastating beam of highly compressed arcane energy. Deals 2,000% Magical Damage per second to all entities within the path of the beam. Range: 1,000 yards. Cooldown: 10 seconds.]
Dante smiled.
Because of [Chrono-Shift], the 10-second cooldown was halved to five.
And because [Chrono-Shift] removed all mana costs, he didn’t have to worry about the massive energy drain required to sustain a continuous Zenith-tier beam.
He was essentially an automated orbital strike platform.
Dante didn’t shout a battle cry. He simply fired.
A massive blindingly bright pillar of pure white arcane energy erupted from his palm.
The beam was ten feet wide and shot instantly across the battlefield.
The sheer localized heat and kinetic force of the ray completely vaporized the air in its path to create a deafening continuous thunderclap.
The beam hit the center of the corrupted beast horde.
It didn’t explode. It just cleanly and flawlessly erased everything it touched.
[-32,000! OVERKILL!]
[-35,000! OVERKILL!]
[-32,000! OVERKILL!]
The damage numbers didn’t pop up individually. They formed a solid static wall of red text over the battlefield.
Dante slowly swept his arm horizontally across the plains.
He dragged the massive continuous beam of white light through the thickest concentrations of the enemy army.
The beasts didn’t even have time to shriek.
The sustained 2,000% magical damage instantly vaporized hundreds of heavily armored bone-golems and corrupted hounds.
They turned to ash before the beam even finished passing over them.
Down on the ground, the rival guild players completely stopped fighting.
They stood in the mud with their weapons lowered.
They stared in absolute terrified awe at the massive white beam of destruction casually sweeping back and forth across the battlefield to systematically delete the invasion force.
[Siege Event Update: 100 Kills Secured.]
[Blood of the Vanguard Buff: +10% to all base stats.]
The buff triggered. The magical attack power of Dante spiked. The beam grew slightly wider and burned slightly brighter.
He finished the five-second cast. The beam snapped off.
Dante didn’t wait. The five-second cooldown had already ticked down while he was firing.
He raised his left hand.
[Skill Executed: Cataclysmic Ray]
A second massive beam erupted and instantly continued the slaughter.
[Siege Event Update: 500 Kills Secured.]
[Blood of the Vanguard Buff: +50% to all base stats.]
The players on the wall, including Lila, Mei, and Casanova, just watched in total silence.
Dante wasn’t fighting a war.
He was playing a point-and-click adventure game.
He casually melted thousands of mobs from the absolute safety of the high ground while his base stats scaled infinitely into the stratosphere.
"I do not think we are going to need to hold the gate," Mei whispered.
She watched Dante completely eradicate the entire eastern flank of the beast army with a flick of his wrist.
