Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic
Chapter 1878 - 1877: The Sentimental Young Lady
This feeling of connecting fractured time with oneself as a bridge has become increasingly clear after confirming the existence of the Bygone Era: Sixth Era between the Fifth Era and the "Present World." Because of Long-Haired Luvia’s six disruptions of space-time, the Fifth Era and the Sixth Era are no longer continuous, and this abnormality will certainly affect the world. Shard even speculates that the absence of new relics in the Sixth Era might be related to this.
In the rustling sound of swaying branches, two green leaves spun down from the sky, landing in Shard’s upraised palm. Two vibrant "Ever-Youth Leaves," one representing a brand new sorcery, the other information related to the "Silvermoon Library."
No matter how hard Shard tried to control himself, he couldn’t help but smile.
"And you said you didn’t immediately use the key because you wanted to quickly obtain information about the library?"
"She" whispered softly in Shard’s ear, with a tone clearly mocking.
"Even if the library’s information cannot immediately allow me to enter it, it might still have a beneficial effect on the upcoming great showdown at Green Lake."
Shard responded to her like this, gently nodding at the illusion of the giant tree before him, then stepping back with a smile.
The white mist dissipated, and although he was stepping back, he walked out from the bathroom door of Dorothy’s room at the Green Lake Hotel on Thursday night.
Intending to explain to the waiting Dorothy the ending of the touching story he just saw, the golden-haired girl spoke first, alarmed:
"Shard, what happened to you? Oh! Where are you hurt, how do you feel now?"
Shard looked down at himself, still covered in mud, his front half stained with blood, in a terrible state.
After managing to explain to Dorothy that he was okay, she sent him off to take a shower. After the shower, Mia stood on the bed, sniffing the two Ever-Youth Leaves, while the balance and bronze bell were placed on the desk. The golden-haired girl stood with her arms crossed by the window, watching the rainy night outside.
Of course, she was also keeping an eye on Mia through the reflection in the glass, ensuring she wouldn’t eat the precious leaves. The "Ever-Youth Leaf," while possessing the "not easily damaged" trait common to all relics, could be easily broken by teeth.
Hearing footsteps, she turned to see Shard walking out, toweling off his hair. He dropped the towel, embraced Dorothy warmly, and then, to the surprise of Miss Writer, took the initiative to ask her,
"Why so proactive today?"
After a kiss, a very satisfied Miss Writer asked with a blush:
"Usually, you wouldn’t propose a kiss. What happened in the past? It seems I should let you have more adventures."
She gently helped Shard change his clothes and then sat down to hear Shard recount the conclusion of Mrs. Miles’ love story, about the girl who waited a lifetime and the youth who burned in flames all his life, walking hand in hand towards their last 365 days.
In the end, he showed Dorothy the Six Rings Enlightenment Rune on the Ring of Fate on his back.
Miss Writer, sentimental as she was, even though Shard’s storytelling skills might not match hers, could still imagine and understand, through the few scenarios Shard recreated from the "Moon Library," how sincere and touching the story from the previous era was.
When Shard reached the end, she nestled in Shard’s arms with tears in her eyes and started sobbing unexpectedly. Shard initially thought she was crying because of the love story, but it turned out she was thinking of something else:
"Tomorrow is Friday, and the day after is Saturday. We waited for 21 days, and although it’s already the Day of the Red Butterfly, it still needs to be postponed."
"Then we won’t delay. We’ll spend Saturday together; we’ve never spent the Day of the Red Butterfly away from home together."
Then he was grabbed by the sleeve by Dorothy, her tear-streaked green eyes "fiercely" watching him:
"How could that be? Saturday, I and Lecia’s... has not yet passed. Are the three of us just going shopping on the Day of the Red Butterfly? What meaning does that wait have?"
Shard momentarily suspected that it was Lecia speaking, and Dorothy, realizing what she had implied, blushed and hit him lightly.
Even though she thought of her own story from someone else’s, it was almost like the original fairy tale of the "Lovers of the Bell Tower," deeply moving Dorothy. Shard was genuinely curious whether this fairy tale originated from this story. Dorothy didn’t know, but she chased Shard and Mia out of the room:
"I’ve got inspiration! I’ve got a lot of inspiration! Anyway, we can’t... tonight, so don’t stay and tempt me. Oh, Shard, you have no idea how much you and Lecia attract us. Please don’t disturb me tonight. I must capture all the inspiration from earlier into my own story!"
Shard initially thought she was joking, but then, carrying Mia, he was literally pushed out the door by Dorothy. Although the golden-haired girl gave him one last kiss, he was still surprised when the door almost closed on his nose and realized he was "chased away" just like that.
Not far from another door, Priest Augustus, seeing Shard being pushed out and staring intently at the door, patted him on the shoulder as he passed by for comfort:
"If she’s angry with you, don’t disturb her now. I’ve dealt with many similar disputes at the church; almost every man has the experience of being locked out by women. Need some comfort? I have plenty of good stories here."
"No, no, Priest, I wasn’t kicked out, I’m just... well, that’s how it is."
The priest was going downstairs for hot tea, and Shard accompanied him while they chatted about the progress of the priest’s investigation on the stairs. Shard wasn’t sure what method Priest Augustus was using to find the whereabouts of the Ghoul Lich trio, but he seemed confident:
"Today is Thursday. I’ll wrap this up before the weekend ends. If I need help, I’ll ask you and Bill. If all goes well, I can handle it myself."
Shard went downstairs to the basement to check if Miss Sylvia and Megan, who went to the Council meeting, had returned. But the large basement only had a completed ritual flickering with light, and the girls maintaining the ritual hadn’t seen the Grand Witch return:
"Do their meetings always take so long? Surely they won’t start in the evening and continue until just before dawn?"
With this doubt, Shard went back to the third floor to find the doctor and told him the good news:
"It’s over, this coin was really useful."
The demon gold coin made by the doctor wasn’t consumed and didn’t belong to past times, so it returned with him to the present. Although curious about how Shard settled things with the other demon so quickly, the doctor didn’t ask further:
"You act really fast. As long as it worked, I knew my craftsmanship wouldn’t be a problem.
But keep the coin. Although it’s made with demon craftsmanship, it doesn’t have much demonic power, so using it shouldn’t be an issue... I remember you need coins to play Roder cards sometimes. You might find it handy."
"Doctor, I don’t cheat at cards, I’m a serious Roder Card player."
Despite saying that, Shard still pocketed the coin. He sincerely thanked the doctor, who was also pleased and shook his head:
"You’ve helped me more. There’s no need for such courteous words. So, do you need me to stay around, or do you have other plans for me? Things seem quite unusual here, isn’t your target that island?"
Shard had considered this question as well:
"Priest Augustus is finding materials for advancing to the Four Rings, and we might need to help him. Also, doctor, I hope you can stay here to ensure the safety of the Green siblings... and also keep an eye on Dorothy for me, you’re aware of her space shift issues."
The doctor naturally had no objections:
"Since you’re all here, there’s no one left for meetings back home. I’ve taken care of matters at the clinic, so no need to worry about that. I’ll stay here then. By the way, I haven’t visited the City of Glass across the street yet. The priest said you gave him a special pass? I’ll just follow him for a walk."
"Captain Lades of the Crossroads Camp is my friend, you can find him if you run into trouble."
Shard added as he pointed to the bathroom door in the doctor’s room:
"What do you plan to do about that guy?"
The doctor then pointed at the door, and a bottle with seven-color smoke floated out as the door opened. This Sage-Level Relic, [Reward of Avarice], although once a demon, couldn’t be consumed by the doctor after becoming a relic—Whisper Elements are deadly to Dr. Schneider, who is still human.
The blue Giant Spirit in the bottle had already helped capture the Maze Demon - Yalu and had a hand in creating the demon gold coin for Shard. As per the agreement, it was time to let it go.
The doctor intended to keep his word, at least this time. When the cork popped off and the blue Giant Spirit emerged from the seven-color smoke, he gestured at it:
"You may leave now. Thank you for your efforts during this period. However, we have a contract, and you cannot disclose any of our information to anyone at any time. If you break the contract, you know what will happen."
"Can I really leave now?"
Floating in the air, the Giant Spirit questioned, and the doctor was slightly surprised:
"Why, do you want to stay and help us deal with that ancestor of Edwards?"
