Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic
Chapter 1880 - 1879: The Four Levels of Authority in [Silvermoon Library]
In front of the rainy window, the golden light trace once again spread along the leaf veins, until all the light entered Shard’s eyes.
He groaned and closed his eyes, digesting the complex, scattered information. It took him a while, holding his head, before he raised it again, making the cat beside him very worried.
"Is it really this complicated?"
Shard already knew the rules of the "Silvermoon Library", divided into different permissions based on the method of entry. This time, he finally learned about all the types of permissions.
Firstly, low-level access, by pushing open the Gate of Silvermoon through a one-time ritual, requiring the three stone tablets in Shard’s hand as keys. Entering the library this way not only has a "once a year" restriction, but although you can browse the library’s collection records, the content that can be viewed is actually limited.
These limitations, even Miss Danester does not know about.
Secondly, intermediate privilege, the ancient Moon Goddess Sect, mastering rituals and moon worship to gain access to the library. This is a gift from the Ancient God - the Sage of Silvermoon, to the believers.
But this method is almost impossible to realize in the Sixth Era now. The site requirement can be fulfilled at the "Night Shrine" in Randall Valley, but the problem is that to open the Gate of Silvermoon, a devout High Priest of the Order and a set of standard ritual activities are required.
The knowledge Tree Father provided includes descriptions of the rituals and prayers. Although incomplete, at least it covers the general content. Shard even glimpsed the worship scenes of the ancient Moon Goddess Sect. The simplest requirement among them is several hundred devout Moon Devotees, which Shard completely doesn’t know where to find.
Of course, this method also requires at least one of those three "Moonstone Tablets" as a key.
"Can I be considered a devout High Priest of the Moon Goddess Sect?"
He looked at his reflection in the rain-soaked window glass and asked in his heart.
[Are you devout to the Moon? Or is it not devotion, but...]
"She" smiled gently, not saying the word they both knew.
Thirdly, high-level authority. The way to obtain this permission, which is also the one Shard is most familiar with, is to find the real door left by the Ancient God leading to the "Silvermoon Library"—just like the five doors currently in his home.
Accessing the library in this way requires meeting basic requirements, namely "Spirit Rune", "Spell Words", and "Artifact".
Among them, "Spirit Rune" naturally corresponds to the Moon. The scarlet, yellow, and holy silver three moons and related spirit runes are all acceptable, but if the meaning deviates too much, the authority might be lowered, but this has nothing to do with Shard.
Shard also knows the "Spell Words", which were used when Miss Danester performed the ritual to call the portal. Moreover, Tree Father’s knowledge also includes this part:
"May the Primordial Silvermoon protect me under the starry night."
He softly recited to the window, and the only response was a "meow~" from Mia.
The last corresponding "Artifact" has different requirements for different Ancient God relic sites.
For example, those Shard has encountered include the witches’ gold jewelry, "The Upside-Down Judge"’s Holy Emblem, "Primordial Rift"’s statue, "Crawling Darkness"’s black robe fragment, Breath of Death, Sage’s Glowstone, and fragments of the Heart of the Earth.
As for the "Silvermoon Library", unsurprisingly, the corresponding artifact is naturally those three Moonstone Tablets.
"But there’s no word on which power in the Material World holds the entrance to the ’Silvermoon Library’. Otherwise, Miss Danester wouldn’t be searching so painstakingly."
Mumbling to himself, he then thought of the high tower on Karas Mountain that collapsed, the tower he suspected he might fall from in the spring of 1853:
"Could it be there?"
But Miss Danester had investigated there more than once. She is a Thirteen-Ring Sorcerer of the Moon System; if such a door really existed, she would have no reason not to find it.
"It’s really tricky."
Actually, the best way to find the space left by the Thirteen Ancient Gods is to wait for the appearance of the corresponding Chosen One. For example, as soon as Iluna became the Chosen One, she immediately knew how to enter the "Inquisitor’s Court".
And even if the Chosen One and he are not aligned, he can seal the "door" in the corresponding Impermanence Card by killing the Chosen One and then place it in his own home...when dealing with the Chosen of Darkness, Shard did just that.
"But as for the Chosen of the Moon, I don’t know when they will appear."
He recalled the conversation he witnessed between Ciris and Long-Haired Luviya during his three-minute "illegal crossing" at the Night Shrine. In an unknown instance of the Sixth Era, Ciris mentioned that the Chosen of the Earth appeared second, and before that, Luviya had already witnessed the legend of the Silvermoon’s Chosen.
"I wonder if this time, the Chosen of the Moon will appear as number...surely not the last one?"
Fourth, beyond low-level, intermediate, and high-level privileges, there exists a "special privilege." To possess special privileges, the method of entering the "Silvermoon Library" must also be very special.
The knowledge imparted by the Tree Father is quite limited, and Shard interprets it according to his understanding. The gist is that the Ancient God [Sage of Silvermoon] personally left some gateways, such as the moon during the Night of the Eclipse. These gateways are only open to special entities.
Special privileges do not necessarily offer more choices than high-level privileges, and high-level privileges do not mean entering the library will instantly grant access to all knowledge. Regarding that library established by the "Sage of Silvermoon," which encompasses all records of the material world, Shard didn’t walk in himself, and relies solely on the knowledge given by deities, thus understanding little.
He pressed his finger against the glass in front of him, sliding down alongside the droplets of rain:
"Moreover, my goal is not merely to enter the library. Touching the original moon remains in the library might allow contact with..."
There is no need for Shard to ponder; he already knows that the moon remains in the library is not something he can touch whenever he wishes. Likely, similar to other special rules left by ancient gods, Shard needs to sacrifice a drop of divinity or another special item to achieve this goal.
Furthermore, the hint received upon leaving the library last time was, "You might see it," implying that it also depends on luck.
In this way, the difficulties Shard faces are more numerous than mountains. Even if he has three drops of divinity now, the difference between actually seeing "Him" is still like that between a cup of water and the ocean.
[So insistent on meeting ’Him,’ what will you do once you meet?]
"She" suddenly asked at Shard’s ear, to which he didn’t immediately reply, but instead picked up the cat on the windowsill:
"That would be..."
Thunk, thunk, thunk!
The door was knocked from the outside, and the Grand Witches who went to the meeting finally returned.
Miss Sylvia and Megan who entered looked a bit tired. After they sat down, the awaiting maids soon served hot tea and pastries. They didn’t immediately talk business with Shard but asked him to wait a while until Miss Benanis was brought here through the portal by Miss Sylvia after some rest, while the Duchess was on her way:
"We’ll discuss it once we’re all here; this time it’s going to be a significant event."
"Your meetings are always this long?"
"This time was even shorter. Some time ago, there was a meeting that lasted until five in the morning. It was only after Galina complained to His Excellency the Speaker, saying poor rest affects one’s skin, that he allowed for a recess if the meeting ran too long, putting non-crucial agendas to the next day when everyone has time to discuss."
Miss Sylvia explained, and Megan helped to clarify:
"But we usually don’t have that many things to discuss; such situations are very special."
Shard was curious about what exactly was discussed in today’s meeting to cause such tension. But since he had to wait for Miss Benanis and Galina to arrive, he had the patience.
The witches’ maids brought pastries and tea, while the cat in Shard’s arms struggled and indicated it wanted to eat:
"Speaking of which, I’d like to ask a question. In the Fifth Era of 1576..."
He calculated the time backward, as Mrs. Miles seemed to be in her sixties or seventies around 1576:
"Was there any major event in the material world between 1500 and 1577 of the Fifth Era, especially related to demons?"
It’s quite shameful. Ever since realizing the time adventures orchestrated by the Tree Father wouldn’t be recorded in history, Shard lost interest in investigating the era background before using the Time Keys. Thus, for the "Black Mist Camp-1576" key gifted by Megan, he used it without conducting any investigation.
Though it seems now that not investigating doesn’t hinder anything, he still has some curiosity about the tribulations Mrs. Miles and Mr. Jackman went through.
Miss Sylvia didn’t respond but looked at Megan. "Knowledge and Wisdom" Grand Witch pondered for a moment:
"Interesting question. Before answering, Shard, can you tell me why you asked this?"
"Of course, it was because of the Time Key you gave me."
He briefly described his unique "Time Investigation" experience, which Miss Sylvia was aware of, hence she supplemented some details while holding her teacup.
It was Megan’s first time hearing such matters:
"Never heard of it... So during the Battle of Pantanal, those ancient witches, and your Saint Byrons founder Miss Mana Feliana... Wait, Galina mysteriously told me she has a secret to ascend to Demigod Witch, is it not a joke? Is it because of you? Such unique talent in time... Are you Time’s Chosen One?"
