Chapter 1920: Chapter 1920: Ladies’ Night Talk

The night was growing deeper, and the rain casting over the Green Lake region was falling heavily. Thanks to the sewer system built during the city’s prosperous times and the guidance of the Duin River, Green Lake City had not yet experienced flooding. However, the splattering rain and humid air created a feeling of dampness all over, leaving people restless.

At eleven o’clock at night, when Megan came downstairs with a candelabra, in a cheerful mood and light footsteps, she found that Miss Galina and Luviya were still sitting at the table by the wall.

The red-haired Duchess and the violet-eyed Diviner could of course hear her footsteps in the silent night, but neither of them greeted Megan. So, the curious witch, after pausing for a moment, checked her attire and walked over to them.

The first floor had not yet entirely darkened, with only half of the gas lamps lit, making it dim. On the table between Miss Galina and Luviya, the three candles on the candelabra were glowing, under which lay a pile of divination cards.

They seemed to be conducting a divination, and it was nearing the final stage.

When Megan reached the table, Luviya had already arranged 23 cards in the order of five, four, five, four, and five, beside the candles.

Galina Cavendish looked solemnly at those cards, then turned over the first one:

"The Thief."

She announced the name of the card and then went for the second one:

"The Shameless Jester."

Her hand was about to flip the third card but was gently stopped by Megan, who stood by the table.

Miss Galina looked up at her:

"What’s wrong? The divination is almost done."

Luviya watched this with a smile but said nothing. The cheerful Megan didn’t argue with Miss Galina either:

"I just wanted to remind you, the last card was the ’Court Clown,’ generally referring to a scoundrel or a sycophant. Drawing this card, you should be careful of someone appearing around..."

She stopped halfway, realizing it was also a linguistic trap.

"Megan, why didn’t you continue? What does it indicate will appear?"

Seeing a smile on the Duchess’s face, the brown-haired witch frowned slightly:

"You and Luviya staying up so late, you aren’t just here waiting to mock me, are you?"

Luviya then spoke up:

"No, no, of course not... at least I’m not."

The Duchess opposite smiled but didn’t speak, so Luviya added:

"Megan, we said from the beginning that Shard would definitely refuse you."

"But you have to give it a try. After all, I really don’t know what will happen tomorrow."

A chair automatically slid from another table behind her, and she released Miss Galina’s hand, sat down, and placed the candelabra she was holding:

"Furthermore, even if I couldn’t get the best prize, besides that prize, I did receive most other awards."

She tried not to let her tone sound too complacent. Miss Galina shook her head:

"If I don’t stop you from continuing to speak, are you going to tell us how many kiss marks are still on you, Megan? Should I remind you of the elegance and dignity a witch should have?"

She pointed to herself and looked at her with some scrutiny:

"Moreover, do you realize who the two people in front of you are? Since you did such a thing, you should consider our feelings, right? Even if you’re not ashamed in your heart, you shouldn’t be so arrogant after snatching someone’s treat."

"Of course."

Megan said slowly, as if chewing on the words, although she felt that as long as she mentioned it to the inscrutable violet-eyed Diviner, it would suffice:

"That’s why I’m here and sat down."

She nodded slightly to Luviya, hesitated for a moment, and then nodded to the Duchess of Draleon.

The violet-eyed girl curled the corners of her mouth, not saying much. Although the red-haired Duchess was still somewhat dissatisfied, seeing her initiative to lower her head, she said no more.

"So, what was the last card you intended to reveal?"

Megan asked curiously, and the red-haired witch brushed her hair:

"We are here so late. Of course, it’s not just waiting for you to help Shard fill and concentrate that perfume vial in front of the station.

Earlier, Luviya and I were discussing tomorrow night’s events. Since everyone is considering how to protect you, we need to think about how to protect Shard, and someone has to plan and arrange this. As for these divination cards, it is the last one that is the real divination. Luviya is attempting to help Shard find a card. That card is extremely rare and elusive, even diviners can’t find it."

The "Impermanence Card" cannot be found through divination; otherwise, the Prophet’s Society would have gathered all thirteen by now.

Miss Galina didn’t reach out again but gestured for Megan to open the card. So, the satisfied witch temporarily set aside the fiery memories she was relishing while coming down the stairs, calmed her mind, and chose the card closest to Luviya. She flipped it over and tossed it on the table; the card depicted an arm reaching out from a slightly opened treasure chest, grasping a dagger.

Although it was a divination, after receiving the ambiguous results, the three did not discuss what it actually represented.

Miss Galina turned to look out the window, the raging rain making the outside completely black:

"Thinking that tomorrow at this time, I might be on Green Lake Central Island, battling unknown monsters, or lost in the maze forged by spatial power, just feels like life is truly colorful. Megan, Audrey, do you want to become The Chosen One?"

She asked, and the brown-haired girl curiously countered:

"Firstly, I am not a candidate for The Chosen One. Although I am part of the family, even if the family becomes The Chosen One, my soul and consciousness will no longer exist. Secondly, have you forgotten what the Speaker said? The probability of council members becoming The Chosen One is very small. We have other responsibilities in ’Whispering Verses’." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Luviya cast a curious glance, but Miss Galina slightly shook her head:

"I cannot say, or rather, although I know something, my understanding is limited. The Speaker is the one who truly holds the secrets.

It is said, because the Witches of the Fifth Era abandoned their responsibilities, obsessing solely over power and desire, this eventually triggered the chaos within the council, directly leading to the collapse of the Fifth Era. Therefore, in the Sixth Era, many changes appeared in the council, one of which is that the responsibilities borne by the Grand Witches are only fully known to the Speaker."

"To prevent the council from experiencing the upheaval at the end of the Fifth Era again, is that why the true responsibilities of the Grand Witches are kept secret from others?"

Luviya asked curiously, and then added:

"I can imagine that you have special responsibilities, after all, you monopolize the special space of the ’Witch Council’. But since you don’t know your own responsibilities, how can you prepare for them, or rather, how do you know you aren’t abandoning them?"

The Grand Witch of Wisdom and Knowledge answered this question:

"The Speaker monitors us at all times. Since the Sixth Era of the Witch Council, the strongest witch is always the Speaker. With one Speaker after another, none of us dare to have any hidden agenda. Of course, how to ensure each generation of the Speaker fulfills their responsibilities is not something we are privy to."

At this point, Shard came to mind. The beautiful Duchess furrowed her brows slightly:

"His Excellency the Speaker seems to know everything... Could she already know about Shard?"

Coins fell onto the table, Luviya glanced at them:

"The likelihood is small, just make sure after your date with Shard, to take a shower and spray perfume before going to the meeting, and she won’t find out."

Megan, feeling mentioned, blushed and remembered the earlier incident, pursing her lips and looking away. Then she caught Miss Galina’s eye, and their gazes immediately separated, feeling like they had been singled out by the purple-eyed Diviner.

However, they both trusted Luviya’s divination, so they weren’t worried about it. Of course, Megan brought up another matter:

"Although we persuaded the Speaker not to come to Green Lake this time, knowing her, she might suddenly appear at the most critical moment tomorrow night."

She is one of the older witches in the council, and almost the most familiar with the Grand Witch of Time, thus she was able to make such a judgment:

"Everything is unknown right now, whether His Excellency the Speaker comes or doesn’t come, it is beneficial for us."

The three ladies were silent for a moment, then Luviya began tidying up the divination cards on the table:

"Trust Shard, just as you’ve always trusted him in the past. Since he promised to protect you, he will certainly do so."

Megan nodded and glanced out the window again:

"Since the rain is so heavy outside, do you still want to return to the temporary residence of the Prophet’s Society? I can arrange a carriage for you, or I can accompany you, I’d like to chat with you on the way."

Luviya refused:

"I’m not going back, I’ve taken three days off, saying I suddenly had inspiration and need to go out of town to find signs to break through Six Rings and advance to Seventh Ring. In view of the important intelligence I provided to the Society, I was granted a brief holiday."

"Where are you staying tonight then? Should I book a room for you? There are many vacant rooms in the inns now."

Megan asked again, not noticing Miss Galina beside her shaking her head with her hand on her forehead.

Luviya looked at him with a smile:

"No, no, I don’t need a new room, I’m staying at Shard’s place. Tonight is the last night before the final battle, and since he’s not home, how can I let him guard an empty house alone? Megan, Shard should still be awake, right?"

With that, she bid farewell to the two and headed for the stairs.

Miss Galina looked at Megan, who appeared stunned:

"She tried all night to coax me into asking that question, which I steadfastly didn’t ask. Unexpectedly, she was indeed waiting for you to ask, see, I did nothing yet she flaunted it."

Megan tugged at the hair beside her ear to hide her embarrassment:

"Luviya Annette is truly an interesting lady. Do you wonder what kind of secrets she holds?"

"That’s for Shard to worry about, not us."

With that, Miss Galina also stood up. The night was deep, it was time to sleep.
