Chapter 1029 - 1028: Punishment
After the children had something to eat, their youthful spirits quickly returned following a brief period of sorrow. They started laughing and playing among the tents, their voices bringing some joy to the otherwise desolate area.
Jiang Cheng and the others earnestly lent their help to the villagers, offering both financial and physical support. These villagers were deeply moved, their gratitude apparent in their words. When no one was watching, they quietly wiped the tears from their eyes.
Amidst the busyness, time passed swiftly, and before they knew it, night had fallen.
Jiang Cheng lifted his head, looked into the distance, and threw something from his hand away.
He was very angry.
The so-called promises from Delmar were nothing but empty words—a promised compensation and relief funds that never materialized.
The area seemed to be tightly sealed off because Jiang Cheng did not see a single reporter nearby. Even when passersby grew curious about what had happened here and wanted to stop and look, they were swiftly driven away by certain people.
Although they wore plain clothes, Jiang Cheng immediately noticed the guns at their waists. He could tell from their movements that they were trained personnel.
Though infuriated by the numb indifference of the Delmar government, which treated its own people so callously, Jiang Cheng did not wish to provoke a confrontation with those in plain clothes.
He decided to observe for a day or two before making any decisions.
After a long day, when they returned to the hotel, a news broadcast on television only further inflamed him.
They watched clearly, as the special envoy, who had taken so many slaps from Ye Ba, stepped forward energetically and with a radiant smile, while the news anchor introduced his background and finally mentioned his current position.
The special envoy had become the top leader of the team.
And what about that fallen Shorty?
The broadcast continued, explaining that the original highest leader of the team was demoted due to certain errors in his conduct, declaring him unsuitable for his previous role.
He became the second-in-command of the team.
This was the severe punishment that Delmar had personally promised Jiang Cheng for Shorty.
Hundreds of lives, many villagers’ lives, meant nothing to these people in power.
Dead is dead.
They had more team members to command, and many more villagers; losing a few wouldn’t make any difference to them.
Jiang Cheng, Yanran, and Ba Lvluo watched the news in silence.
The news anchor, indifferent to their feelings, continued the broadcast without pause.
That night, under Shorty’s supervision, a grand cocktail party was held at the most luxurious hotel on Erma Planet to welcome the special envoy as their new leader.
Jiang Cheng shook his head. After a simple wash-up, he sat cross-legged on the bed for his daily meditation exercises.
Other than in special circumstances, it wasn’t appropriate for him to share a room with his two female disciples, so after a brief greeting, Yanran and Ba Lv returned to their own room.
During the day, they had tirelessly aided the affected villagers, without seeing any presence from the Erma Planet government. This absence of action made Jiang Cheng even more furious.
Later, back at the hotel, seeing Shorty, the main culprit of it all, the same Shorty whom the Erma Planet’s leader vowed to punish severely, merely getting a demotion was infuriating.
Meanwhile, the special envoy, a close friend of the Erma Planet’s leader, happily assumed the highest leadership role as planned.
This kind of light punishment was outrageous.
In the face of those affected villagers, they didn’t take any action, yet they were quick to promote personnel.
After bidding their teacher goodnight, Yanran and Ba Lv returned to their room.
Both of them sat gloomily by the bed, battling fatigue while a fiery desire for justice for the victims churned within them, making it impossible to rest.
"Can we just let this slide?" Yanran wondered aloud as if speaking to herself.
Ba Lv heard Yanran’s words but didn’t respond.
Yanran raised her head, "Hey, I’m talking to you," she said to Ba Lv, "Did you hear me?"
"I heard you," Ba Lv responded, collapsing onto the bed. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
"So, answer me, can we just let this go?" Yanran pressed.
Ba Lv sat up again, scrutinizing Yanran’s expression, "You look like you have a plan, don’t you?"
Yanran gave Ba Lv a playful slap, "What do you think, troublemaker? Do I really have to say it out loud?"
Ba Lv giggled, "But look at our teacher; he hasn’t reacted at all. You think if we do something, he’ll punish us?"
"Hah!" Yanran snorted, "That just means you don’t know him. He’s the type who despises evil and injustice. I bet he knows exactly what we’re thinking."
Ba Lv got up, put on a black outfit, strapped a pair of daggers to her belt from a drawer, and took out two pistols, handing them to Yanran, "So what are we waiting for? Since our teacher won’t punish us, we have nothing to fear."
Once Yanran slung her bow over her shoulder, the two fearless, trouble-seeking young women quietly left the hotel. Their target this time was one of Erma Planet’s upscale hotels.
The hotel was bustling now, as a high-profile figure was hosting a banquet to celebrate his promotion to the top leadership role of the Erma Planet team.
The afflicted villagers, unnoticed by journalists, were nowhere to be seen there. But in this high-profile gathering at the hotel, reporters ran around with their microphones, eagerly covering the event.
Shorty held a glass of wine in his hand. Although he was demoted, he was in very high spirits.
No wonder, despite causing such a major mess, his punishment was merely losing the top leadership role. It was an absurdly lenient penalty.
Especially since, through this event, he had aligned himself with the special envoy and even the leader of Erma Planet.
Shorty curved his lips in a mysterious smile, suggesting depth and enigma yet also hinting at a touch of sarcasm.
Though Shorty was punished, his status remained prestigious, so other high-profile figures still greeted him reverently.
