Chapter 1038 - 1037: Peril
Although those Shi Min already had a place to settle down, they still came back here every day, watching these ruins being cleared into ground suitable for building houses, then watching teams of construction workers drive into the site and get busy in full swing.
Yanran and Ba Lv also came back here every day; one reason was that they were indeed relatively idle, and they were waiting for Shorty to fulfill the promise he had made to them.
Four days. Within these four days, Shorty had to come up with a plan they could trust. In addition, he had to take some concrete action; if he only talked, no matter how fancy it sounded, it was all useless crap.
Yanran and Ba Lv’s other task was to supervise the progress of these works, in case that slippery Shorty only did some superficial stuff to fool them.
So these two days the two of them were basically here, only heading back to the inn after dark, then rushing to that construction site again at first light the next day.
Jiang Cheng saw there wasn’t much that needed him, and was happy to slack off. He was never that kind of person to begin with; in fact, he really hated dealing with these ordinary commoners—in truth, he and they were people from two completely different worlds.
Besides, now he had two rather remarkable female disciples. They were highly skilled and quite capable, his competent assistants.
So these two days Jiang Cheng cheerfully stayed at the inn reading books or studying galactic cloud maps and such, living an easy little life.
As for Yanran and Ba Lv, running off to that noisy-as-hell construction site every day, he didn’t ask.
Shorty even specially sent a subordinate over to report to him the progress of the disaster-relief resettlement work over the last two days. Even though Jiang Cheng had no interest in listening, Shorty’s subordinate still dutifully detailed the progress of each project to him, driving Jiang Cheng half crazy.
To make it worse, the one reporting to him was an older man who looked pedantic. He didn’t care about Jiang Cheng’s expression at all, and every day just went ahead and finished everything he wanted to say.
As for whether Jiang Cheng listened or how much he took in, that wasn’t his concern.
These peaceful days went on for two days, and on the third day something finally happened that was out of the ordinary.
On the morning of the third day, not long after work had begun at the site, a group of people suddenly showed up, viciously demanding that the workers put down their tools and stop working.
Of course the workers ignored them. If they didn’t work, where would their wages come from? The sooner the project finished, the sooner they got paid, and the more they could earn.
Now a bunch of people suddenly jumped out and wouldn’t let them start work—of course they disagreed.
There was arguing at first, and then they started fighting; as things escalated, they actually started using weapons.
That group trying to stop the work were clearly prepared. Although they were fewer in number than the workers, they were all fairly capable fighters. When it came down to blows, they casually pulled out all kinds of sticks from their bodies and started beating the unprepared workers.
Under such circumstances, although there were more than ten disaster victims standing by, how could they dare get involved? Other than panicking and running to a safe distance, yelling things like, "Stop fighting! Stop fighting! If you keep fighting someone’s gonna die!" and so on, what else could they do?
Faced with something like this, of course Yanran and Ba Lv weren’t going to stand by and watch. Never mind that these workers were indirectly serving them; even if it were just some innocent passerby being bullied unreasonably, with their hatred of injustice, they would absolutely not stand aside.
...
What’s more, this was happening right in front of their eyes. Asking them to ignore it would be worse than killing them.
So Yanran and Ba Lvluo stepped forward to stop those thugs who came to cause trouble. They told those troublemakers that this was a resettlement project backed by the mansion; if they didn’t know what was good for them and kept interfering with the progress, the relevant people from the mansion definitely wouldn’t let them off.
What they didn’t expect was that these thugs didn’t take the mansion Yanran mentioned seriously at all. They shouted, pointing their sticks at Yanran and Ba Lv, telling them to get out of there, and they all started spouting some extremely nasty crap.
How could Yanran and Ba Lv tolerate these damn bastards slinging mud at them? So as soon as those thugs opened their mouths, the two of them rushed forward and started punching and kicking.
The group of thugs didn’t retreat in the slightest. They also charged up fiercely, swinging their sticks, and in an instant they were brawling in a heap with Yanran and the others.
Although these thugs outnumbered them several times over and were armed, under the onslaught of Yanran and Ba Lvluo they were still soon all lying on the ground.
Yanran and Ba Lv despised their filthy mouths, so they held nothing back with their blows—other than not killing them, that is. Yanran and the others weren’t murderers; if it wasn’t necessary, they wouldn’t kill.
Under these conditions, broken arms and legs for those thugs were pretty much inevitable.
Looking at the thugs sprawled all over the ground, groaning non-stop, Yanran and Ba Lv finally vented some of their anger.
The workers who had been bullied by the thugs also took the chance to kick them a few times. The bolder ones even picked up sticks and viciously whacked their legs a few times.
Suddenly, another large group of thugs came charging up, waving sticks. The workers took to their heels and ran, while Yanran and Ba Lv went up to meet them.
No matter how fierce these people were, in their eyes, these thugs were just human-shaped sandbags—only fit to be beaten up.
The two sides clashed.
For a moment, among the fighters all you could see were fists and feet flying, sticks swinging. This fight was even fiercer than the one just now, and therefore even more dangerous.
This batch of thugs had clearly much stronger combat power than the previous batch. For a time, they actually had a slight upper hand. Not only were these thugs skilled individually, their coordination was also extremely smooth. Their advances and retreats were measured, and they fought with clear technique.
Under the attacks of this group of thugs, Yanran and Ba Lvluo didn’t gain the slightest upper hand. Empty-handed against more than ten armed thugs, they were having a very hard time of it.
These were definitely not ordinary thugs! Yanran and Ba Lvluo realized this almost at the same time. If even the common thugs on Erma Planet all had skills like this, that would be really too ridiculous.
It wasn’t like they hadn’t fought people from Erma Planet before.
Like that time in Delmar Town, when Yanran did an endorsement for a sports agent. That agent saw that Yanran could bring him endless business opportunities, and actually went back on their original agreement, wanting to force Yanran to keep working for him.
When Yanran flatly refused, that agent, seeing that talking was useless, started having bad ideas.
