Survival of the Nation: I Can Specify the Items That Will Drop
Chapter 390: Ground Melee (Part 1)
What was more troublesome was that after the crushed Skeleton Soldiers fell, they would stand up again under the Necromancers' spells, crawling out from the piles of bones.
However, the War Elephants had already torn through the front line of the sea of skeletons, ripping several huge gaps into the grayish-white ocean.
The Heavy Infantry followed closely behind; the battle-axes of the ten thousand Ice-Snow Great-Axe Heavy Infantry struck the Skeleton Soldiers, dealing -100, -101, -99 damage.
Those Skeleton Soldiers that had been trampled to half health by the War Elephants were harvested by the Heavy Infantry, one every three axe swings.
The Heavy Infantry were expressionless, hacking a skull to pieces with one axe blow, pulling the axe out, and hacking again. Their movements were mechanical and efficient, like tireless meat grinders.
But there were too many skeletons. Some full-health skeletons required five axe blows to take down. As the ones in front fell, those behind trampled over the broken bones and surged forward. The Necromancers in the rear kept resurrecting them, and the sea of skeletons was like a tide, wave after wave, impossible to kill completely.
The Skeleton Soldiers' rusty swords hacked at the Heavy Infantry's armor, dealing -40, -41, -42 damage.
The single-hit damage wasn't high, but when ten skeletons besieged a Heavy Infantryman simultaneously, the accumulated damage was quite significant.
One Heavy Infantryman was hacked in the leg armor by three skeletons at once; his health bar dropped by over a hundred, and he staggered, only to be steadied by a comrade beside him.
Even more dangerous were the Undead Warriors, which used the skeletons as cover to thrust their spears from a low stance. The spear tips passed through the skeletons' ribs and shoulders, aiming straight for the Heavy Infantry's throats and abdomens.
One Heavy Infantryman was pierced through the throat by a spear tip, blood gushing out. He fell while clutching his neck, and the reserve team behind him immediately filled the gap.
Another Heavy Infantryman was pierced through the thigh by a spear, dropping to one knee. He used his battle-axe to support his body, gritted his teeth to pull out the spear tip, and continued to swing his axe.
Casualties were increasing, but no one retreated.
The infantry phalanx advancing in the center followed behind the Heavy Infantry. The Delhi Sultanate Infantry of the Tieba Kingdom held up their round shields, their scimitars glinting coldly in the sunlight.
They squeezed through the gaps in the Heavy Infantry into the sea of skeletons, their scimitars hacking at the skeletons' cervical vertebrae, dealing -79, -75 damage.
The Skeleton Soldiers' rusty swords hacked at the round shields; the shield surfaces were covered in scratches but never shattered.
The Yellow Turban Strongmen of Zhenyue City charged at the very front, their iron rods smashing the skeletons' skulls, dealing -100, -102 damage.
The Skeleton Soldiers shattered like porcelain vases before the Yellow Turban Strongmen.
However, an Undead Warrior's spear thrust out from the skeleton swarm, piercing the abdomen of a Yellow Turban Strongman. He groaned, grabbed the spear shaft, smashed the spear tip with his rod, and backhanded the Undead Warrior's skull to pieces.
The Kshatriya Warriors of the White Elephant Country patrolled the flanks of the phalanx, their scimitars tracing arcs as they cut down the Skeleton Warriors attempting to flank them.
Their movements were clean and efficient, never dragging or sloppy.
But the Undead Warriors' armor was much harder than the skeletons'. Scimitars hacking at it dealt -60, -61 damage, requiring over a dozen strikes to take one down.
Casualties among the Kshatriya Warriors also began to appear. One warrior was pierced through the chest by an Undead Archer's bone arrow and fell with a scream.
Another warrior was stabbed through the shoulder by an Undead Warrior's spear and was dragged to the rear by his companions.
Three thousand Cossack Light Cavalry on the left wing charged into the flank of the Undead Army like a gale.
The cavalrymen leaned low on their horses, lances leveled. In the first charge, the spears pierced the skeletons' chests, tossing them into the air.
Immediately after, they swung their sabers, cleaving the skeletons' skulls. The horses' hooves crushed white bones, and the impact sent the skeletons reeling, throwing the Undead Warriors' ranks into chaos.
Because their formation was disrupted, the Necromancers in the rear had their resurrection rhythm interrupted. Within a ◆ Nоvеlіgһt ◆ (Only on Nоvеlіgһt) few short minutes, large gaps appeared in the sea of skeletons on the left wing.
The two thousand Cossack Light Cavalry on the right wing were equally unstoppable, lances leveled and sabers drawn, plowing paths of blood through the sea of skeletons.
However, the Cossack Light Cavalry's attack power was limited, dealing only 99 to 105 per hit. It took four or five strikes to kill a skeleton and eight or nine to kill an Undead Warrior.
The cavalry's true advantage lay in the speed and impact of their charge: charge in, carve out a bloody path, pull back, and charge again.
After several back-and-forth cycles, the horses' speed slowed down, and the power of the charge was greatly diminished.
At this point, the left wing cavalry had lost over three hundred riders, and the right wing had lost nearly two hundred.
But their sacrifice bought stability for the flank lines, successfully delaying the speed at which the Undead Army's two wings could close in.
The Heavy Infantry's casualty figures were also climbing. However, the four-layered assault of War Elephants, Heavy Infantry, infantry phalanxes, and cavalry finally completely crushed the front line of the sea of skeletons.
The Necromancers' resurrection speed could not keep up with the rate of attrition, and the front line of the sea of skeletons grew thinner and thinner.
The pressure on the infantry phalanxes eased, and the front line began to advance.
On the ground, the southern line of the Undead Army began to loosen under the crushing pressure of the coalition's fifty-thousand-strong army.
The front line of the sea of skeletons had been torn apart, and gaps appeared in the Undead Warriors' lines.
The coalition infantry phalanxes surged through the gaps, tearing them wider and wider.
On the walls of Thang Long City, the defenders' arrows rained down, shooting the Undead Warriors attempting to counterattack from the gaps into sieves.
The lines outside the city had already shown cracks; the time for the counterattack from inside the city had arrived.
At the South Gate of Thang Long City, the drawbridge was lowered, and the city gates swung open.
Twelve figures rushed out from inside the city: nine Third Rank powerhouses from Annan Country and three Third Rank powerhouses from White Elephant Country, totaling twelve people.
They could not fly, but on the ground, they were like tigers descending a mountain, blade light and sword shadows flashing as they slaughtered their way into the flank of the Undead Army.
Leading them was General Li Wendong of Annan Country, in his early forties, with a resolute face, wielding a long-handled battle-axe.
Behind him followed eight Annan Country powerhouses, each wielding their own weapons: scimitars, spears, staves, and shields.
Among the three from White Elephant Country, one was a tall warrior wielding a trident, one was a dual-wielding warrior, and another was a healer holding a staff.
The twelve formed an Arrowhead: Breakthrough formation, with General Li Wendong as the spearhead, stabbing straight into the flank of the Undead Army.
Scimitars hacked, sending Skeleton Warriors' skulls rolling to the ground; the battle-axe swept, cutting Undead Warriors in half at the waist; spears thrust, pinning the skeletons attempting to surround them to the ground.
The twelve were like a red-hot knife cutting through butter, tearing a gap in the side of the sea of skeletons.
The Undead Archmages noticed the threat posed by these twelve people.
Ten level 35 Undead Archmages floated over from the rear of the army, their withered-wood staves held high. Their grayish-white robes fluttered in the wind, and the soulfire in their eye sockets was a ghostly, eerie green.
They hovered three meters above the ground, spreading out in a semi-circle to surround the twelve.
"Scatter! Shield wall!" General Li Wendong shouted.
Three Annan Country shield-bearers rushed to the front, their tower shields lined up side-by-side, the shield surfaces glowing with a pale blue runic light.
The Undead Archmages cast spells simultaneously, and ten dark black Shadow Arrows shot in from different directions, as dense as rain.
The shield-bearers held up their shields to take the hits head-on; the Shadow Arrows struck the shield surfaces, exploding into clusters of black mist, the runes flickering violently.
One shield-bearer was hit by three consecutive Shadow Arrows; cracks spread across his shield, and he groaned, dropping to one knee.
The healer behind him immediately cast a spell, and a pale green light fell upon him, stabilizing his health bar.
"Counterattack!" General Li Wendong swung his axe and charged forward.
