Surviving in the Beast World with a System
Chapter 398 - 351: The Settlement is Gone?
The home their tribe had lived in for generations was now completely buried. Wu Yue knew that with it buried this deep, unearthing it would be an incredibly difficult task.
After safely making it through the great rainy season, the first order of business for the Snow Tiger Tribe was to find a new settlement.
On the third day after the great rainy season ended, the members of the Black Wolf Tribe departed. They were anxious to return to their own territory, the land where they felt at ease.
Meanwhile, the Snow Tiger Tribe Leader, the Witch, and some of the tribe’s elder beastmen began discussing where to establish their new settlement.
Wu Yue stayed by the Witch’s side, listening to the various opinions of her tribespeople. Overall, most of them supported moving somewhere else.
Wu Yue knew all the locations they suggested. Grandma Hua Shu had told her about them during their previous gathering trips, but without exception, every single one was in a low-lying area.
This made Wu Yue frown secretly. ’If they establish the settlement in another low-lying area, it will just get buried again the next time it rains or floods. We’ll just have to move again.’
’Why can’t they solve this problem once and for all?’
After the middle-aged beastmen left, only the Clan Leader, the Witch, and Wu Yue remained in the cave.
After taking a sip of water, the Witch suddenly turned to the young female behind him who hadn’t spoken a word. "Yue, do you have any thoughts?"
Wu Yue pursed her lips at his question. "Witch, why does our settlement have to be in a low-lying area?"
The Witch paused, taken aback. "A low-lying area?"
Wu Yue nodded. "Our last settlement was the same. Water would pool whenever it rained, and this flood submerged it completely. That’s all because our settlement was located too low. Why can’t we build it somewhere higher?
I know all the places those beastmen just mentioned, but they’re all in extremely low-lying areas. If next year’s great rainy season brings another flood like this, will we have to search for a new settlement yet again?"
Wu Yue’s words struck a chord with the Witch.
In truth, he also wanted to build the settlement on higher ground.
Even on a mountainside would be fine, but the tribe’s middle-aged beastmen always wanted to build on flatter land.
Wu Yue said, "The caves where we’re living now are great. We just need to clear out the area, and it would make an excellent settlement.
Even if the surrounding terrain is a little uneven, we can reshape it bit by bit. Then we won’t have to keep moving during the great rainy season, and we won’t have to worry about floods when it rains."
Wu Yue’s idea didn’t win the immediate approval of the two leaders, but she was confident she wasn’t the only one who thought this way.
After several days of discussion, the Snow Tiger Witch stood in an open area near the caves and announced the Snow Tiger Tribe’s new settlement would be established around this very cave system.
The beastmen began digging caves on the outside, while the Pure Humans began to build thatched huts.
Even Wu Yue started to get busy building her own thatched hut.
The caves were too stuffy. Given the choice to live outside, she was sure few of her people would want to remain cooped up in those inner caverns.
Except, of course, for the slaves. They had grown quite fond of that cave.
"Yue, your cave is finished. Come and see."
Wu Yue, who was in the middle of preparing to build her own thatched hut, looked at Yuan Lang in surprise. "My cave?"
The beastman smiled. "Of course. You’re a witch now, so naturally you get your own cave."
With that, he led her toward the middle of the cliff face. "Those two are the Clan Leader’s and the Witch’s caves. Yours is here."
Wu Yue’s cave looked a bit smaller than the Witch’s and the Clan Leader’s, but the entrance and the walls had been polished very smooth.
But what surprised Wu Yue the most was a smaller cavern off to the side in the very back. Inside it was a stone platform.
"This is a bedstead."
’Bedstead?’
Wu Yue chuckled inwardly. ’He still uses such old-fashioned words.’
But as far as she was concerned, the cave was absolutely perfect.
"When you dug out this little side cave, was the person living next door alright with it?"
Yuan Lang raised an eyebrow. "It’s fine. He doesn’t mind."
Wu Yue looked at him suspiciously. "The one living next door wouldn’t be you, would it?"
The beastman nodded very naturally. "Of course. Living close makes it easier to take care of you."
The construction of the new settlement proceeded rapidly, partly because they had the members of the Scorpion Tribe as a source of cheap labor.
Wu Yue stood at the edge of their former home, gazing out at the land now buried under mud and sand. She tried to pinpoint where she used to live, but after a moment of searching, she found that not a single trace remained.
