She stood there for a few seconds, silently watching Lucas and Elena under the covers. It was almost as if she knew something had happened.

Lucas figured she must have heard some of the noise and come out to check if anything was wrong.

After confirming that everything was fine, she simply switched off the light and returned to her room.

The moment the door closed, Elena shot upright beneath the covers.

"Lucas, I thought you said she was asleep?" she whispered harshly, sounding more offended than she probably intended.

"I did..." Lucas sat up as well. "She must’ve woken up because of how loud you were."

"Th-That was your fault too!" she shot back, her face turning red. "And... I haven’t done something like that in a long time, so... I couldn’t help it."

She crossed her arms and glared at him.

But Lucas could tell she wasn’t actually angry. If anything, the way she looked at him had changed.

"I’m going to sleep!" she declared before pulling the blanket over her head and turning away from him.

Lucas almost asked her not to.

The only reason Carol was able to live like this was because it was her. The majority of people were starving, unable to leave their houses because of the monsters roaming the streets.

As someone that used be one of those people until recently, Lucas could only appreciate every single bite. Gradually, what was on his mind a few minute before didn’t seem to matter as much.

"How’s the food?" Carol asked from the other side of the table.

"Great!" he answered.

"Well you have Elena to thank, she woke up early to prepare everything" she said.

"Thank you Elena," Lucas raised his head.

"Theres no need for that, I can only cook because Ms. Carol provides all the ingredients and it’s one of my hobbies so I actually enjoy it,"

As she spoke their eyes met but she shifted her gaze as her face turned red.

It was obvious she was thinking about what happened last night,
