Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse
Chapter 120: How Confident Is Dr. Hayes?
In truth, Candice Tate didn’t know what "nervous" meant, and she hadn’t understood what Kevin Everett was saying at all.
She only knew what she was supposed to do.
’Grow as many crops as possible, use up all my Superpower!’
’Anything else isn’t my job to think about or do!’
They had just about finished their discussion when Jayce walked over. "Time to eat!"
There was steamed rice and stir-fried dishes.
There was no shortage of vegetables, making the table a colorful spread.
The sight alone was enough to make one’s mouth water.
Of course, Sierra Sullivan and Candice Tate didn’t stand on ceremony. They sat down and dug right in.
Only Leo Lowell hesitated, holding his bowl of rice, not daring to reach for the dishes with his chopsticks.
"Leo!" Kevin Everett said with a smile. "No need to be so formal. We’ve already eaten. This was all made for the four of you. If you don’t eat, won’t it all go to waste?"
For people who had survived this long in the apocalypse, the one word they couldn’t bear to hear was "waste."
Leo Lowell, who had been nervous just a moment ago, immediately picked up his chopsticks. "I’ll eat! I’m eating right now!"
’How could I not eat!’
’I absolutely cannot let it go to waste!’
Seeing him begin to eat heartily, Kevin Everett finally smiled in satisfaction.
Before they had even finished their meal, someone returned to give a report.
The announcement encouraging everyone to participate in awakening their Superpowers had been released.
Some survivors were indeed tempted, but most remained skeptical.
Especially after what the Cheney father and son had pulled, people were deeply prejudiced against the idea of awakening Superpowers.
Some were even saying that Kevin Everett’s actions were no different from what the Cheney father and son had done.
The only difference was that Kevin Everett’s words were prettier, and his promises were bigger.
Kevin Everett had no intention of explaining himself in the face of such talk.
Even if he did try to explain, these people wouldn’t listen anyway.
It was better to let them wait and let the facts speak for themselves.
Listening to their conversation, Sierra Sullivan was reminded of Dr. Hayes.
There was something she had wanted to ask Dr. Hayes for a while, but various things had delayed her.
Now that she remembered, Sierra decided to go and ask him right away.
After the meal, she left Candice Tate in Yvonne Shelby’s care, and Sierra and Jayce went straight to find Dr. Hayes.
Dr. Hayes was just as he had been last time, his face devoid of any superfluous expression.
Even upon seeing Sierra Sullivan and Jayce show up at his door, he didn’t seem surprised in the slightest, nor did he ask the reason for their visit.
After opening the door and seeing them, he didn’t say much, simply turning and going back to his work.
Sierra and Jayce followed him quietly, not wanting to disturb him.
Sierra’s thinking was simple: she wanted to wait until Dr. Hayes was finished with his work before asking her question.
It was a sign of respect.
However, the doctor suddenly turned his head to look at them.
"If you have something to say, just say it. If you’re planning to wait until I’m finished, then I have to tell you, I’m never finished."
His words sounded a bit rude.
But, from what they had just seen, Dr. Hayes was telling the truth.
He was truly busy.
Waiting for him to be "finished" would indeed be a long wait.
With that in mind, Sierra didn’t hesitate any longer.
"I just wanted to ask you, Dr. Hayes, is it possible for one person to awaken two Superpowers at the same time?"
Judging by Dr. Hayes’s attitude just now, he hadn’t been taking Sierra very seriously and didn’t seem to think she could ask any important questions. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
But now, after hearing her question, the expression on Dr. Hayes’s face changed as he looked at Sierra.
"Why would you have such an idea?" Dr. Hayes asked in return, not answering her question.
"I was just reading a novel before. In the book, some people could awaken several Superpowers at once. It just got me thinking, could something like that happen in reality?"
Dr. Hayes mulled it over for a moment. "So you got the idea from a novel. In that case, it’s not surprising you’d think of it. To be honest, I’ve had the same idea myself. I just haven’t had a chance to test it."
"Why?" Sierra asked, curious.
Based on her understanding of Dr. Hayes, he seemed like a man of action.
Since he already had the idea, he would surely have tried to experiment on it quickly. What could have delayed Dr. Hayes until now?
"You’re both people with Superpowers, so you should understand. Once you have a Superpower, when you absorb a Crystal Core, the energy is automatically used to enhance that existing Superpower. It’s very difficult to use a Crystal Core’s energy to awaken a second, different Superpower."
Listening to Dr. Hayes’s explanation, Sierra nodded instinctively.
What he said was true.
That did seem to be the case.
"Therefore, to accomplish this, you would need someone with an incredibly strong will and immense control. So far, I haven’t found anyone like that—"
At this point, Dr. Hayes suddenly stopped and stared intently at Sierra.
The longer he looked, the brighter his eyes became.
He hadn’t said a word, but just by the look in his eyes, Sierra could already guess what he was thinking.
Not only had Sierra guessed, but Jayce had as well.
Jayce took a step forward, blocking Sierra. "Don’t look at Sierra like that. Get rid of that dangerous idea in your head."
He would never let Sierra subject herself to such a risk.
Dr. Hayes wasn’t the least bit deterred by Jayce’s attitude. "She’s an independent person with her own thoughts. Even if you two have a close relationship, you can’t make decisions for her."
Jayce pressed his lips together, not saying anything for a moment.
Although he wanted to deny it, he had to admit that Dr. Hayes was right.
He really couldn’t make Sierra’s decisions for her.
Sierra’s mind was in turmoil.
If she could really awaken multiple Superpowers, it would be a huge advantage for her.
Especially a Wood Element Ability and a Space Ability.
If she had both of those abilities, she could use her space without any worry.
But awakening two more Superpowers was by no means a simple matter.
The risks she’d have to take would be doubled.
If she succeeded, great. But if she failed...
Sierra didn’t let her thoughts continue down that path. Instead, she took a deep breath.
’If I worry about this and worry about that, I’ll never accomplish anything.’
The more you want, the greater the risks you have to take.
With that thought, Sierra instantly made up her mind.
"How confident are you, Dr. Hayes?"
Before Dr. Hayes could even answer, the corners of his mouth curved up.
This was the first time Sierra had ever seen Dr. Hayes smile.
From this, it was clear that Dr. Hayes was genuinely pleased.
"I’m already fifty percent confident. If you’re willing to try, our chances might be even better."
