The 1970s: Married First, Fell in Love Later
Chapter 316 - 315: Eyelid Twitching
When Ziqing came out, she saw Qi Mingyang already chatting with her dad.
"Sis!"
When Xiao Nian saw his sister, he happily ran over to her.
Ziqing looked him over. "You’ve gotten taller again."
Xiao Nian puffed out his chest. "Of course. I’m a grown-up now."
Ziqing smiled and nodded. "Yes, you are."
"Dad, Aunt Wang."
Wang Hui Fang smiled and replied, "Wow, your school is so big and beautiful."
Ziqing looked at her and said, "I can show you all around."
He Nan looked at Ziqing. It seemed she had put on some weight since he last saw her, and her complexion was much better. ’This must have something to do with Qi Mingyang,’ he thought, feeling much more satisfied with his future son-in-law.
He Nan asked her, "Your engagement is in a few days. Will you be able to get time off from school?"
Ziqing nodded. "Of course. I just need to let them know. Dad, wait for me. I’ll go back and tell my advisor, then I’ll leave with you."
He Nan hadn’t seen his daughter in a long time and missed her dearly, so he naturally wanted to spend more time with her. "Will it affect your studies?"
"It’s fine."
Ziqing turned and ran back. Watching her rush about, Qi Mingyang sighed inwardly. ’You only see this side of her when she’s with her family.’
Qi Mingyang said to He Nan, "Wait for me a moment. I’ll go get the car and drive you."
"Sorry to trouble you, then."
"It’s no trouble at all."
On the way, Xiao Nian looked left and right, touching things, incredibly curious.
He Nan frowned. "Sit still. Don’t touch anything, you might break it."
Hearing this, Qi Mingyang laughed and told them, "It’s fine. It’s just a metal shell; you can’t break it by touching it."
Hearing this, Xiao Nian pouted his lips at his dad. ’See? My future brother-in-law said it won’t break.’
In truth, it wasn’t just Xiao Nian. It was also He Nan and Wang Hui Fang’s first time in a car like this, and it felt very special. But since they were adults, they were too embarrassed to look around everywhere.
After dropping them off at He Lang’s front door, Qi Mingyang didn’t go inside. He figured he should give the family some space to talk.
"Uncle, I have a class soon, so I’ll be leaving now. If you need anything, just have Ziqing give me a call. I’m available anytime."
He Nan nodded and agreed.
Xiao Nian watched Qi Mingyang and grumbled internally, ’He’s already starting to suck up to his future father-in-law.’
Mrs. He heard the commotion at the door and rushed out.
"Oh my, Eldest, you’re finally here! Just last night, your father was saying you should be arriving soon. I didn’t expect you to get here today."
He Nan smiled and said, "Mom, we were delayed by something. Are you and Dad both in good health?"
Mrs. He nodded. "We’re great, just great! With all the good food and drink every day, how could we not be healthy? I’ve gotten round as a ball."
Wang Hui Fang said with a smile, "You do look like you’ve put on some weight."
Mrs. He happily pulled Wang Hui Fang inside. "Isn’t it true? My old clothes are all a bit tight now. It’s a shame, they were all nice clothes that Yue’er bought for me."
The last time Wang Hui Fang saw Mrs. He was when He Ze’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. Mrs. He’s face had been terribly pale back then, a world of difference from how she looked now.
"Third Brother and the others aren’t back yet. Your father is managing the warehouse for Third Brother now. He’s so busy he’s run off his feet and won’t take a single day off. He says if he’s gone for even a day, everything will fall into chaos. As if! I don’t believe Third Brother’s big supermarket would stop running without him," Mrs. He said jokingly.
He Nan smiled and replied, "It’s good to be busy. It means Third Brother’s business is doing well. I’ll go take a look at his supermarket in a bit. I’ve always been curious how different it is from the supply and marketing co-op back home."
Xiao Nian quickly said, "Dad, I want to go too."
He Nan glanced at him. "Fine, we’ll all go have a look. Mom, are you the only one home? Why don’t you come with us?"
Mrs. He shook her head. "You all go ahead. I’ve been there a few times already, so I’ll stay."
They had a cup of hot water at home, rested their feet for a bit, and then headed out again to He Lang’s supermarket.
After getting off the bus, they saw it at a glance.
"Yueya Supermarket," Xiao Nian read from the sign above the store.
As soon as they entered the supermarket, they saw people coming and going inside.
He Ziniannian scanned the area and his sharp eyes immediately spotted Little Chen.
"Brother Xiao Chen."
Little Chen heard someone call him and looked toward the entrance. Seeing his eldest uncle’s family, he quickly got up, said a word to the person next to him, and ran over to them.
"Eldest Uncle, Eldest Aunt, Sister Ziqing, Xiao Nian, you’re here!"
He Nan looked at him and laughed. "Attaboy, I almost didn’t recognize you. Where are your third uncle and your grandpa?"
"My grandpa is definitely in the warehouse. My third uncle is in his office on the third floor. I’ll take you to them."
He Nan nodded. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Xiao Nian grabbed Little Chen’s arm. "Brother Xiao Chen, can we look around the supermarket?"
Little Chen nodded. "Of course you can. Let me show you around first."
"That works too."
Little Chen led them around, explaining things as they went.
They were filled with nothing but amazement. Xiao Nian couldn’t help but praise, "My third uncle is really something else. Awesome."
Little Chen nodded. Indeed, He Lang was an idol in the eyes of the younger generation.
They continued wandering up to the third floor. "The third floor is for appliances."
He Nan went inside and looked at the dazzling array of appliances. Then he looked at the prices, and his eyelid started twitching. He counted the digits, and his eyelid twitched even faster.
It was the same for Wang Hui Fang. Looking at the listed prices, she thought about the money they had brought and figured they probably couldn’t afford a single thing.
Ziqing was also taken aback. After a quick glance, she felt a little flustered. ’This is all too expensive.’
He Nan couldn’t help but ask Little Chen, "Can this stuff actually sell?"
Little Chen smiled. "Eldest Uncle, we have trucks making deliveries for customers every day. What you’re looking at are all imported appliances. We have domestic ones over there; they’re a bit cheaper."
He Nan nodded. ’No wonder it’s so expensive,’ he thought.
They came out and entered the next room. The appliances here looked quite a bit cheaper than the previous ones. He Nan did a quick mental calculation and figured they were still over two thousand.
Little Chen took them to the office area and knocked on He Lang’s office door.
"Come in!"
"Third Uncle, Eldest Uncle and his family are here."
He Lang looked up, saw it was He Nan, and quickly stood up.
"Big Brother, Sister-in-law, you’re here."
He Nan looked at He Lang with a complex expression. "Third Brother, I had no idea until I came... I never realized your supermarket was this huge. It’s made my head spin."
He Lang laughed. "Did you take a look around?"
Little Chen said, "I showed Eldest Uncle and the others around."
He Lang chuckled. "Look at you. You’re not as well-connected as Dad. He comes to work here every day and knows the employees better than I do."
He Nan laughed. "That’s how it should be. This way, Dad finds it interesting. Otherwise, if he just stayed at home every day, he probably wouldn’t be able to stand living in Beijing City for even a day."
That was true. It was precisely because he understood his father so well that He Lang never interfered. His dad could do whatever he wanted, and if he didn’t want to rest, He Lang let him be.
