The 1970s: Married First, Fell in Love Later
Chapter 333 - 332: The Wig Fell Off
Seeing this, the man jerked to the side, and the child’s head slammed straight into the seatback with a loud THUD. The child in his arms didn’t react at all, but—his hair fell off.
Gu Kai Zhi’s eyes narrowed. It was a little boy. What was even more surprising was that neither the husband nor wife showed any concern for whether the child was hurt. Instead, they scrambled to pick up the wig and put it back on his head.
The man gave Gu Kai Zhi a shove. "We don’t need your help."
With that, he headed for the exit.
This completely confirmed Gu Kai Zhi’s suspicions. This couple was definitely up to no good.
The train car was cramped, so he didn’t make a move, afraid of injuring the child or other passengers.
Gu Kai Zhi followed the couple, watching as they made their way toward the station exit.
Just as Gu Kai Zhi was about to make his move, he saw several patrol officers standing at the exit. They appeared to be looking for something.
They were paying special attention to people with children, and they even seemed to be checking the kids’ clothing.
The couple saw the activity ahead and suddenly stopped in their tracks.
The woman’s gaze trembled as she whispered to the man, "What do we do?"
The man stared at the officers ahead, his eyes narrowing in thought for a few seconds. "Take that outfit out of your bag and wrap the kid in it. One-Eye is still waiting for us, and the money’s all set. If they ask, just say she’s our granddaughter."
At the station exit, they were also stopped by the patrol officers.
First, their train tickets were checked, and then the officers asked about the child in the man’s arms.
The man hunched his back and said, "Officer, this is my granddaughter. My son works in Beijing City. He and his wife are too busy with work to look after their daughter, so we came to pick her up. The little one misses her mom and dad. She cried for most of the trip and just now fell asleep."
The officer looked at the child and said, "Let me see the child’s face."
The man grew tense but didn’t dare to refuse. Just as he was about to comply...
Suddenly, the woman clutched her stomach and started wailing, "My stomach hurts! Officer, help me! My stomach hurts!"
Just as the officers’ attention was about to be diverted, Gu Kai Zhi stepped forward.
"Officers, I suspect this couple are human traffickers," he said. "That child isn’t their granddaughter. They put a wig on him—he’s a boy. They may have kidnapped him."
The man spun around and shot Gu Kai Zhi a vicious glare. "That’s bullshit! Officers, he’s lying! I don’t even know him! This is my granddaughter!"
Gu Kai Zhi raised his voice. "Pull the wig off his head. Look at the clothes he’s wearing underneath. This child has been asleep ever since he got on the train—for a dozen hours straight. What kid sleeps like that unless they’ve been drugged? If you don’t believe me, try to wake him up. See if he stirs."
The officers exchanged a glance. Recalling the notice from Beijing City, they realized this had to be the case.
Seeing things were going south, the man dropped the child and bolted. Gu Kai Zhi lunged forward and caught the boy just before his head could hit the ground.
The woman was already being restrained. The man was fast, but after a short sprint, officers tackled him to the ground as well.
Holding the boy, Gu Kai Zhi breathed a sigh of relief when he saw both traffickers had been caught. He looked down at the child in his arms and placed a hand under his nose. He was still breathing.
The patrol officers brought Gu Kai Zhi, the child, and the two traffickers to the station’s security office.
Inside the security office, an officer was already on the phone with the authorities in Beijing City.
When He Lang and Xue Xingzhou received the news from the police station, they immediately bought tickets and rushed to Yu Province.
Meanwhile, back in Yu Province, Gu Kai Zhi showed the officers his military ID. Realizing he was a soldier, they relaxed and spoke with him more freely. He recounted what he had observed on the train and the suspicions that led him to intervene.
The officer didn’t hide the details from him. "We got a call from the Beijing City police station saying a seven-year-old boy was missing. When we saw a girl, we relaxed our guard a bit. We never imagined they’d disguise him with a wig."
Gu Kai Zhi nodded. "It’s true. If that wig hadn’t fallen off, I would have thought he was a girl too."
"Traffickers these days are meticulous," Gu Kai Zhi said. "This boy has probably been drugged. We need to get him to a hospital right away."
"We’ve already notified the family in Beijing City to come for an identification, but we don’t know for sure if it’s the same boy yet."
Everyone looked over at the still-unconscious child. Even if he wasn’t the boy from Beijing City, he was clearly a victim of kidnapping.
The officers were in a hurry to get the two traffickers to the police station. They needed to find out if they were involved in other kidnappings, so any other children could be rescued as soon as possible.
Seeing how busy they were, Gu Kai Zhi offered to take the boy to the hospital with one of the officers.
As a soldier, Gu Kai Zhi had a strong sense of duty. Besides, he was worried about the boy, who had hit his head on the train.
He Lang and Xue Xingzhou arrived in Yu Province that evening and were told that the child had been taken to the hospital.
He Lang asked urgently, "Is he hurt? Why was he taken to the hospital?"
An officer explained, "The boy was unconscious the whole time, likely from being drugged. Fortunately, there was a soldier on the train—he was on his way home for a family visit—who sensed something was off. The traffickers had dressed the boy as a little girl and nearly fooled us as well. But Mr. Gu recognized the disguise. He also said the boy hit his head while they were getting off the train, so we sent him to the hospital as a precaution."
He Lang and Xue Xingzhou exchanged a look before rushing to the hospital.
When they found the room, He Lang pushed open the door and immediately saw Shiyi on the bed. He was talking with a man whose back was turned to them, his face hidden from view.
He Lang called out, "Shiyi!"
Hearing his name, Shiyi looked over and cried out in excitement, "Dad! Uncle!"
He Lang strode over and swept Shiyi into his arms.
After a few seconds, he set Shiyi down and looked him over from head to toe, his hands checking for injuries. "Are you hurt anywhere? Huh?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Shiyi, still a bit dazed, shook his head. "Dad, I don’t hurt. I’m just a little dizzy."
He Lang asked him, "Why are you dizzy?"
Seeing his concern, Gu Kai Zhi quickly explained, "The doctor said it’s from inhaling a large dose of the knockout drug. It’s normal to feel a bit dizzy and nauseous."
He Lang’s brow furrowed, but as he looked at his son’s face, he reached out to stroke his cheek before pulling him into another tight hug.
Xue Xingzhou turned to Gu Kai Zhi. "You must be Mr. Gu? The officers at the station told us what happened. We’re incredibly grateful to you for what you did. Thank you so much."
Gu Kai Zhi stood up. "My name is Gu Kai Zhi. It was nothing, really. No need for thanks."
Xue Xingzhou extended his hand for a shake. "Xue Xingzhou. I’m the boy’s uncle, and that’s his father, He Lang."
Gu Kai Zhi nodded. "The doctor said the boy is fine. He’s just dizzy, so they want to keep him for observation overnight."
Xue Xingzhou looked at Shiyi. "Alright, little guy, tell us what happened. How did you get snatched away? You know, the whole family was going out of their minds looking for you. Especially your dad—he was on the verge of tears."
